Market Like a Boss

Episode 75: Stop Taking Responsibility for Your Clients

Listen Later

On this week's episode of the Market Like a Boss Podcast, I'm discussing how to stop taking responsibility for your clients. I feel like a lot of people talk about this topic online, but don't discuss how taking responsibility for your clients is a marketing problem. Yes, I said it. This all comes back to who you're attracting to work with you...are you working with people who think you should be doing everything for them or you're in charge of their success? Guys, you're not responsible for their success. You're the expert and you provide guidance, but they have to put in the work.

Let's dive in…

Does this sound like you? Do you wake up at night where you're worrying about your clients?

Do you always tell them yes? Do you obsess over every detail on the work you do for your clients?

It's so easy for us to take responsibility for our clients especially if you're from the corporate world or agency world. Going back to what I said before this is a marketing problem...you're attracting the wrong clients to work with. You deserve more.

So why do we do this?

I think this can come back to a few things:

- You don't believe in your value which causes you to work with the wrong clients and think that's all you deserve.

-You don't believe in your results or solutions you can provide your clients.

-You're a natural people pleaser and have difficulty setting boundaries.

-You're afraid of a client and fear of a bad review.

Taking on the responsibility for your clients is the worst you can do for yourself and your clients. Every successful entrepreneur doesn't expect things from others and they take ownership of their business. Is that hard? Absolutely, but if you're with a client and you care more about their success than they do...this is a problem. This comes back to you being worried about what people might think of you if your client fails, but guess what ladies, you're enabling your clients. Your client won't be successful for a long period of time if you're doing everything for them.

Personally, I want my clients not to need me anymore. It's my job to guide them through issues in their business, but not spoon feed them. I don't give my clients all the answers as I want them to think about solutions for the business and marketing. I'm involved in their process, but so are they. I'm not taking on all the responsibility. It forces my clients to go on in their business. You can't make all the decisions for them. It's not up to you. Ladies, set boundaries, set a clear description of your role when working with a client, and start attracting the dream clients that want their business to thrive!
