Joy had bariatric surgery 14 years ago and lost weight as expected following surgery. Prior to surgery, Joy rarely consumed alcohol and did not knowingly engage in any other addictive behaviors or consume other addictive substances. More than a year passed before she took a sip of alcohol. Her first post-surgery drink was four ounces of wine. She was almost instantly dizzy and intoxicated. The next night she again drank a glass of wine. She did the same the following night. Within a year, her alcohol consumption was affecting her relationship with family members and she was told by the human resources department at her job that she was to seek treatment for her alcoholism or lose her job. Listen to the interview with Joy and learn about transfer addiction following bariatric surgery.
