Do you feel like you might need revision surgery but carry shame, fearing it means you "failed" your original procedure? Dr. Melissa Bagloo of Advent Health joins us to bring insight and encouragement. She’ll walk us through what revisional bariatric surgery is, explaining that sometimes it's necessary—not due to any fault of the patient. Dr. Bagloo also shares how to know if you’re a candidate for a revision and why finding a surgeon you trust is vital. We share our journeys, which include revision surgery, and discuss why it’s essential to understand that obesity is a chronic disease requiring ongoing care. Plus, we explore the challenges of tracking bariatric data and the importance of choosing a highly skilled surgeon. Don’t miss this discussion about whether revisional surgery might be the right step for you.
IN THIS EPISODE:
[0:28] This episode is sponsored by Advent Health Central Florida.
[1:17] Revision surgery is defined as a surgery that comes after your original surgery and is nothing to be ashamed of.
[4:02] Jason and Natalie share their revision stories.
[8:03] When patients are too high-risk, revision surgery is often necessary.
[13:25] There are continual advancements in bariatric surgery.
[21:09] Getting the proper patient/physician relationship and support from the BariNation Membership Community.
[23:40] When would a patient know they would benefit from revisional surgery?
[26:22] Jason and Natalie reveal when they knew they were candidates for revisional surgery.
[37:10] What to look for in a surgeon.
[42:49] Advent Health offers self-pay options if insurance refuses to pay.
[52:56] How to make connections to Advent Health and take advantage of Special Advent Health Discounted Monthly Member and Join the BariNation Membership community to support your journey.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Revisional bariatric surgery is sometimes a necessary step, often due to factors beyond the patient’s control. Both patients and providers need to see it as part of a continued journey, not a failure.
Finding the right surgeon is essential: Patients considering revision surgery should seek a surgeon experienced in various bariatric procedures and with whom they feel comfortable.
Obesity is a chronic disease. Obesity requires ongoing management and care, and addressing the emotional aspects, such as patient shame, can improve patient experiences and long-term results. The critical point is understanding and accepting that it is a chronic disease.

Have you ever wondered if the pouch reset diet is a good idea or too extreme? In today’s episode, Dr. Edmund Chen joins us to break down the myths and misconceptions surrounding pouch reset diets in bariatric surgery. Dr. Chen dives into why quick-fix approaches can be dangerous and emphasizes the importance of building healthy eating habits and staying in touch with your healthcare team. Together, we discuss the goals you should focus on—like non-scale victories and realistic milestones—and why BMI alone doesn’t define your health. This conversation is all about redefining success and staying positive on your journey!
IN THIS EPISODE:
[:29] Check out the BariNation online membership community.
[2:30] Is the pouch reset diet a good idea or too extreme?
[5:23] Going back to the basics of tracking and measuring your food.
[7:17] Faithfully using the Bari Good Day Checklist found in the BariNation community to stay on track.
[9:21] Talk to your healthcare provider when you have a concern.
[12:50] Dr. Chen gives the listener advice on this chronic disease.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Pouch reset diets are not a healthy approach to eating. They mimic the highly restrictive calorie intake of the initial one to two weeks after surgery, which is not sustainable or balanced long-term.
Consistent healthy eating habits and regular exercise will help you achieve your weight loss goals. Being mindful of what you eat and making nutritious food choices will significantly affect your overall well-being.
Many people let their emotions trigger unnecessary panic about their progress. Instead, focus on setting realistic goals and lean into support from the BariNation community. If you’re feeling discouraged, contact your medical provider—they can guide you through the steps needed for your unique situation.

Should you eat carbs or should you not? That is a common question we see not only in BariNation, but also everywhere we look on social media. Today we have Bariatric Registered Dietitian, Andrea Luongo on the show to share the truth about carbs. We discuss what carbs are, what role they serve in our bodies, and which are best for the bariatric journey. She discusses how to utilize different types of carbs and why whole foods are so important. Lastly, she talks about why self talk and self trust are essential when it comes to eating. Tune in, and don’t forget to join us in the BariNation Membership Community or become a Patreon Supporter, where we continue all of our conversations with bonus episodes!
We are excited to announce that Andrea has joined our panel of experts in BariNation and will be leading monthly nutrition classes! She is such a wealth of knowledge, we cannot wait to hear her first talk.
IN THIS EPISODE:
[2:50] Andrea introduces herself.
[7:34] Why do carbs get such a bad rap in our world?
[12:12] Is it ok to have lower carb intake after surgery?
[15:42] How does our body utilize carbs?
[18:39] Why is fruit such a feared carb?
[23:06] Why are whole foods so important for our diet?
[30:32] What is emotional hunger?
[32:20] April shares about her challenges being on a GLP-1 and eliminating the hunger desire.
[37:09] Why does self talk and self trust matter?
[40:53] Learn how to get more access to Andrea through our membership and Patreon!
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Carbs are the body’s preferred source of energy and are necessary to keep our body from using muscle mass.
Your body needs all macronutrients - protein, fat, and carbohydrates. If it is missing one, it will have to utilize the other and then you’ll be under feeding certain parts of your body and cells, or your body won’t be able to create certain cells.
It’s not about doing everything all at once at the same time, perfectly. It’s about learning these things as we go and implementing them and experimenting along the way to see what works for your unique body.
You are ok to eat, it's about a balance, and not a perfect balance. Start to learn your carvings and it’s ok to have carbs, just learn which one your body is asking for.

Can you get all the protein necessary with a plant based diet or is animal protein the best? This is a question that we get in the community, so this week we brought on bariatric registered dietitian and obesity specialist, Jeannie Boyer. Jeannie is super involved in our BariNation Membership, and is such a delight. We discuss why a variety in protein is so important, and what the difference is between plant and animal proteins. Jeannie explains how to ensure you are getting the right protein and what to look for in a supplement. Tune in, and don’t forget to join us in the BariNation Membership Community or become a Patreon Supporter, where we continue all of our conversations with bonus episodes!
Exciting news for bariatric beginners: every Wednesday in November, Natalie is leading a beginner bariatrics meetup where those who just had surgery, are entering the bariatric realm, or are getting started with their pre-op can come and learn what the journey may look like. Natalie will be sharing some great tips, and success stories to help you ease your mind.
IN THIS EPISODE:
[2:25] Is there a difference or is there a quality difference between animal vs. plant protein?
[5:25] Why is variety in protein so important?
[6:59] What is a good protein supplement and how should they be used?
[10:17] How can BariNation Members utilize Jeannie?
[12:31] What should people look for with their protein sources to ensure they are meeting their bariatric guidelines?
[13:38] If you are interested in learning more about this topic, head over to Patreon to join us for Jeannie’s bonus episode!
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
The difference between plant and animal protein is how efficiently our bodies can absorb all of the nutrients in them and how complete the amino acid profile is.
Your body isn’t designed to do protein shakes and liquid protein for life, as your body continues to heal, the goal is to get nutritional needs from whole foods.
Variety in your diet is going to serve you the best!

Have you heard of intuitive eating and wonder if it’s right for you? Or maybe you’ve tried it and realized it just isn’t working. This week, Kelly Broadwater, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, is on the show to discuss how to make intuitive eating work for bariatric patients, and when the right time is to introduce it on your journey. Kelly talks about why adults struggle with intuitive eating, which just gave us such an ah-ha moment! Tune in to learn how to learn self trust and discover if intuitive eating is right for you.
IN THIS EPISODE:
[1:20] Kelly introduces herself and talks about how she helps people.
[4:39] What is Intuitive Eating?
[10:55] How does Bariatric Intuitive Eating translate to bariatric patients?
[14:17] What’s the best way to navigate food choices after bariatric surgery?
[18:02] Why do adults struggle to eat intuitively?
[26:50] How do you learn self-trust?
[29:44] What is disordered eating?
[40:47] Kelly shares resources for those wanting to learn more about intuitive eating.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Intermittent fasting is not something you do right after post-op. This is ideal for when hunger has returned and you are in a maintenance phase.
It’s all about eating good to feel good, not to be good. Are you feeling good? Are you feeling energized? Is it fueling your body right?
A great principle to coping with emotions is kindness, and learning new ways to nurture yourself without using food to cope with emotions.

It can be a challenge to stay motivated when it comes to movement. We all know it’s important, but it seems to be the first thing that goes out the window when our schedules change or things come up. [9:20] Is movement important?
KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Movement will look different for everyone, just because someone is moving a certain way doesn’t mean you should be moving the same. Do what is right for you!
If you are intimidated by the gym - go on YouTube and get familiar with the movements. That way when you go into the gym you will feel more comfortable.

We have another fantastic episode for you this week! We know what it can feel like to experience overwhelm when it comes to exercise and movement after your bariatric surgery, so we brought on JJ Rodriguez, an expert in this space. JJ talks about how to approach a fitness, health and movement routine, what the differences between the three are, and what is going to be most impactful. He describes how to create goals that align with what you are trying to do, and why one person’s fitness routine isn’t the answer for the next person. Tune in for a wealth of knowledge from JJ and walk away with some great tips to get you started on your journey.
IN THIS EPISODE:
[1:56] JJ Rodriguez introduces himself.
[5:20] How does JJ reframe exercise to have a positive connotation?
[11:50] True or False? Exercise will not help bariatric patients lose a significant amount of weight after surgery?
[17:41] Why is the scale going up when you are working out so hard?
[23:41] Why should you exercise?
[30:01] JJ explains why movement should always be goal based.
[31:28] What is a prescribed exercise?
[35:48] What are the three different buckets that people fall into on the exercise spectrum?
[41:39] Should you do cardio after your weight training session?
[45:49] How do you shift your focus as life events shift?
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Fitness happens in the gym, weight loss happens in the kitchen.
The prime reason to exercise is to move it or lose it. The quality of life and functioning is the prime reason we should move.
Identifying your goals is the most important thing, because it helps depict what your exercise plan should be.
You must move every day and find consistency with your routine to see the changes in your health and life.

[10:00] Should you wait until after surgery to start an exercise routine?
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Some of the best forms of exercise for people who struggle with obesity are cycling, swimming, and low impact exercises.
The best exercise is the one that you enjoy doing because if you don’t enjoy doing it, you’re not going to do it. It has to be fun and engaging!
Pre-operative movement actually helps people be in better condition for their surgery. The stronger you are with both physical conditioning and pulmonary conditioning, the better your recovery will be.
