On this week's episode of the Market Like a Boss podcast, I'm talking about why you need to let go of fear in your marketing and some practical ways to do it. This feels like a super relevant episode since I just made the exciting (and super scary) decision to hire my first full-time employee. Fear is constant at all levels - no matter how long you've been in business or how much money you make. Instead of running from it, we need to face it.

Let's dive in!

Why are you afraid in the first place?

Most of your problems in marketing can be tied back to fear.

Not getting clients consistently? You're afraid to show up and share your offer because part of you doubts whether you can help clients get results.

Not booking enough sales calls? You're afraid to hear the word no.

Not getting enough engagement on your posts? It's because you're not really saying what you WANT to say due to fear of judgement.

It's not enough to say you're going to make an effort to show up more. It's not enough to come up with a calendar for posting content regularly. It's not enough to post once a week about your offer and invite people to get on sales calls.

What really matters: identifying the root of your fear and taking steps to tackle it head on.

Where does your fear come from?

Whenever you feel scared, ask yourself this question: why am I feeling afraid right now? What am I afraid will happen? What is the worst case scenario here?

Once you've identified what's behind the fear, I want you to see it for what it truly is: a thought. As Brooke Castillo says, "the thing you're actually afraid of is your thoughts about fear vs. fear itself." What thoughts are you having right now? What things are you telling yourself? I guarantee that's the root of your fear.

How do I let go of the fear?

Letting go of the fear starts with the following steps:

#1 → Acknowledge that your thoughts aren't always facts. Look at the thought you're thinking and ask yourself: what's the truth here? For example: I'm afraid to land more clients because I won't be able to help them get results. Truth: I've helped many clients get results before and I know I can do it again. See what a shift that is?

#2 → Identify worst case scenario. How would you handle it if that thing came true? Often the worst case scenario in our minds isn't worst case at all. Plus knowing how you would handle the worst shows you that you're completely capable of figuring things out.

#3 → What's best case scenario? If we're going to think about worst case scenario, we also need to think about the best case scenario. This will keep our minds rooted in what's possible and get us excited about the step we need to take.

#4 → Make a list of all the actions you would take if you knew you were guaranteed to have the best case scenario. Keep in mind that there may also be some actions you wouldn't take.

#5 → Commit to taking one new action every single month. Truthfully, you can sit around and think about all the steps you'll take to face your fears all day long, but if you don't actually take action then none of it matters.

#6 → Celebrate! We forget to celebrate our accomplishments constantly. Celebrate the fact that you've faced a new fear. Recognize that you're still standing. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?
