Faux-Zempic and The Impact of The GLP-1 Craze

Listen Later

On this episode, I'm talking about GLP-1s and the icky way they are being promoted and sold to us under the banner of Wellness. I also talk about THAT Hims and Hers commercial that aired during the Superbowl and the ass-backwards messaging that we can't seem to escape. For today's conversation, I invited Dr. Erin Parks, clinical psychologist and co-founder of Equip, to discuss the impact of GLP-1 marketing on both people in larger bodies and people suffering from Eating Disorders. Once again, we never want to demonize anyone for taking any medication, but rather shed light on those who might be negatively impacted by the culture surrounding it.

A few corrections on the content of this episode:

Erin was correct that there was an elderly couple in "Titanic" who decided to go down with the ship holding hands. This was based on a real couple who made this decision in order to allow others to be rescued, since they were both quite old. It was truly a heroic act of self-sacrifice. (Source: Today)

Erin quoted the Hims and Hers commercial as saying "75% of Americans are overweight," and I had remembered it as 76%. Turns out, we were both incorrect. The commercial said 74%. In any case, it's pretty irrelevant, since the statistic is bullshit.
