If you are applying to hundreds of jobs each week, it can be difficult to remember what all you’ve applied to. So when you get an interview, you may appear not to be excited about it, and that is a red flag to an employer. Find Your Dream Job guest Julissa Vasquez says a great way to stand out from other applicants is to know why you want the job, why you’re the best fit for the job, and the immediate needs of the company. Julissa wants you to do your research on the people who work there, and the values of the company, and then share how you can meet those needs with specific examples that show you really want this job.

You might be willing to accept any position offered to you, but that can often lead to a poor fit within a company. Find Your Dream Job guest Jessica Conn says fitting into the culture of a workplace is crucial to your future with that employer. Your values, beliefs, and actions need to align with those of the environment. Jessica suggests doing enough research before an interview to ask clarifying questions of the hiring manager. Don’t go against your values for a paycheck, or you could find yourself back in the job search sooner than you hoped.

Check out the podcast on Macslist here: (https://www.macslist.org/?post_type=podcasts&p=15729&preview=true)

Are cover letters still relevant in a world with applicant tracking systems? Absolutely, says Find Your Dream Job guest Kai River. Your cover letter is a chance to tell an employer who you are, why you’re the best person for the job, and the experience you bring to the table. Kai says you should personalize your cover letter for each position you apply for, and share relevant stories that apply to that field or specific job. Kai also suggests keeping your cover letter to one page if possible.

Check out the podcast on Macslist here: (https://www.macslist.org/?post_type=podcasts&p=15714&preview=true)

Making it to a final interview is not a guaranteed job offer. If you’re meeting with the CEO or higher management, this is the time to stand out from the other candidates. Find Your Dream Job guest Frank Smith shares how to do that in a positive way. Come prepared with relevant questions. Be clear on why you think this job is the right one for you. Don’t bad-mouth a former employer. And, most importantly, says Frank, do your research on the company so you can state clearly why you’re the best fit for the position and the company as a whole.

Frank Smith is the president of Mosaic Personnel. It’s a recruiting firm that places great people in the right opportunities.
