Did you know that when you walk into an interview room, you are in the driver’s seat? If you struggle to know what to say during interviews, Find Your Dream Job guest Tanya Maldonado suggests teaching. You teach the employer who you are, what you have to offer, and how you have impacted previous companies. Tanya also says you should prepare questions for them, to get to know more about the company, and so that your answers can address those issues. Your words matter, so use them carefully, sparingly, and to become a known entity to the employer and no longer a stranger.

What do you think an employer wants to hear from you in an interview? If you said, “My background and skills,” you aren’t wrong. But according to Find Your Dream Job guest Charles McGee, it goes much deeper than that. An employer wants quantifiable facts. How did you make a difference at your previous job that can be measured? Charles also suggests not being afraid to share your weak points, but also explain how you’ve grown and overcome them, and what you learned as a result. Lastly, keep your resume concise; less visual clutter is easier for the employer to get through.

Online applications attract thousands of people looking for a job, but they rule out their ability to stand out from the crowd in a sea of applicants. Second, captivate the hiring manager with your presence. Stand, speak, and behave in a way that commands respect. And lastly, Leila suggests working on your self-confidence. If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will believe in you.
Leila Singh is a leadership, career development, and mindset coach. She also hosts the weekly podcast, Life Leadership.

How do you determine what to do next in your career? That depends on your situation, says Find Your Dream Job guest Kathy Oneto. But if you have time to figure it out, Kathy suggests beginning with self-reflection. Examine peak moments in your work and personal life to determine what’s important to you. Then, Kathy says, ask yourself a series of questions to clarify what you’d like to learn, where your passions lie, and what motivates you. Finally, it’s time to take action. Just thinking about what to do next won’t get you there; you have to take a step in the direction you think you want to go.
Kathy Oneto is a consultant, facilitator, and coach. Kathy also hosts the Sustainable Ambition podcast.
