Only in my mid-thirties did I understand the term "people pleasing".
I heard about it but hadn't associated with it likely because I hadn't identified that this was a state that one could be in.
I hadn't yet reached the self-awareness to realise that every time I felt…
➡️ Internally pressured to say yes to events and collaborations that felt misaligned.
➡️ Frustrated when I'd agreed to do something or go somewhere when I really didn't want to and consequently had to spend time doing something or being somewhere I didn't want to be.
➡️ Annoyed that something was now out of whack because I agreed to it.
This was all the result of "people pleasing". All because I didn't want to be seen as a mean person or make others feel rejected, or that I didn't want to be seen as selfish or inconsiderate of others, OR that I didn't want to be seen as ungrateful to someone because I won't make the "effort" to meet them halfway.
Coincidentally, all of these supposed consequences had to do with "being seen as" and caring too much about what other people thought of me.
It makes a lot of sense why many of us would feel extremely challenged when putting a firm NO on the table.
In this episode, we discuss the very true possibility of finding your voice in the context of NO and how it's possible to be a kind, generous person and also be firm on your decisions as to where to spend your time, energy and money.
