  • Episode 29: Let's analyze some 2022 polling!
Wear is the Love, Episode 29

In this week’s episode, we discuss two things: the new NYT/Siena polling on the 2022 midterm election and Sen. Joe Manchin’s recent scuttling (over inflation concerns) of the last dregs of Build Back Better. (NYT) The midterm polling has some super interesting nuggets around Biden v. Trump, voter issues, and generic congressional ballots. President Biden will sign an Executive Order on climate programs in response to Manchin — and you’ll hear how we feel about the White House’s decision to split up prescription drugs and ACA extensions and climate/energy. (CNBC)

    Episode notes:

    NYT/Siena crosstabs

    WaPo’s Editorial Board opinion

Jonathan Chait’s essay for NY Magazine

Wisdom of Crowds’s podcast with Michael and Jane Coaston

Also, hey…if you’ve been a long-time reader of the Top 5 or listener to Wear is the Love, would you consider becoming a subscriber? Subscriptions help us a great deal! In return, we carefully curate your faith and politics news each week.

The Top 5 articles for your week:

“There are Trees in the Future, Or, A Case for Staying” (Protean Magazine)

Because Lupita Limón Corrales asks, “If every place becomes any place, what difference does it make?”

“What Counts As Seeing” (Orion Magazine)

Because this is a delightful interview between Alice Wong and Ed Yong, a science journalist for The Atlantic, on his latest two books. Yong says, “We think of the senses as passive intake valves: Light enters my eyes; my ears are vessels for absorbing sound. But actually the senses have this almost active role in shaping the world around us. In viewing nature’s palettes, eyes also act like paint brushes.”

“Keeping our options open” (Aeon Magazine)

Because “Whenever an insect species vanishes, or a language loses its last native speaker, the biosphere loses options.”

“Uyghur Poems From a Chinese Prison” (The Atlantic)

    Because “Poems—which can be composed

  • Episode 28: The vibes are off
If this is the newsletter you open when you don’t quite know how to process the news — consider becoming a paid subscribing member. Your contributions make this work sustainable, and allows us to experiment with new ideas and content each week.

Wear is the Love Episode 28

On this week’s episode, we talk about the role of influence in DC politics and who has it via this Rolling Stone article, “SCOTUS Justices ‘Prayed With’ Her — Then Cited Her Bosses to End Roe”. We also talk about all the whispers surrounding the coming(?) recession and how economist Kyla Scanlon has written a hilarious and informative article called “The Vibecession.” Her piece got me thinking about the amount of cynicism in American culture towards America itself right now, and how that’s affecting us all. Many vibes on this pod. Many vibes.

The Top 5 articles for your week:

“The Vibecession: The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy” (Substack)

Because are we headed into a recession? No one knows! But Americans are starting to feel like we are, and that counts for a lot.

“Joe Biden: Why I’m going to Saudi Arabia” (Washington Post)

Because President Biden defends his trip Saudi Arabia, despite the country’s involvement in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and other human rights issues, and essentially lays out his Administration’s approach to the Middle East.

    “Unsettled” (The Verge)

Because last week, we included a housing crisis article in the Top 5, and this week, The Verge covers the bureaucratic mess for housing refugees at the moment, especially since Biden administration officials report that the US is not hitting resettlement targets.

    “Signs of Life” (Hazlitt)

Because “Psychologists agree that repeated exposure to trauma stories, even if that exposure is only second-hand, leads to a “disrupted world view,” one wherein the world no longer appears benign.”

“There I Almost Am” (Yale Review)

Because this is a more unusual article to include in the Top 5 — more literary than ideas-based — but it’s about what it’s like to be a twin. It’s beautiful.
