Through the isolation of the pandemic, 17-year-old Sophia Rascoff realized that people were connecting through two things: social media and food. Her own family bonded over food during this time in a way they never had before. With traditional social media focusing more negative aspects of life, she decided to create a vertical social media platform celebrating the joys and connectivity of food. Together with her father Spencer Rascoff, founder of Zillow and Hotwire, they founded Recon Food.
According to Sophia, a coding enthusiast, Recon Food allows people, especially people in slightly older generations, to enjoy what’s great about social media without all the toxicity. Spencer recognized that social media platforms are becoming increasingly specific, and centered around a single hobby, like running or hiking. As a result, Recon Food has fostered a genuine and enthusiastic community across the world. Between running cross-country, playing chess and applying for colleges, Sophia has continued to run her business and grow her community successfully.
Sophia provides insights about how she organizes her time, why cold emailing is still one of the best techniques to attract partners and investors, and how to get used to hearing the word ‘no.’ Enjoy the advice from this amazing female co-founder and her incredible father!
Quotes
• “When I hear social media is bad, I know, but I’m not going to stop using it. We’re so far into it at this point, and it’s become such an important tool. And it can be used for good. There are so many amazing things that social media can do.” (13:49-14:02- | Sophia)
• “I am a productive procrastinator. When I don’t want to do something, instead of just wasting time on my phone or something, I’ll do other stuff that I also should do but is not time-sensitive.” (30:07-30:19 | Sophia)
• “Be a little bit more arrogant in a good way, a little bit more self-assured, don’t let rejection get you down, and network the heck out of things. Whether it’s men or women, that’s just critically important for founders of all types.” (33:00-33:18 | Spencer)
• “Finding something that affects you greatly and deeply, means you’re the right founder and the right addresser for that topic.”(34:07-34:13 | Sophia)
