　北の国の王様は、おもしろいことはないか、と思っていられました。毎日毎日、単調な景色に退屈されていたのです。

　ちょうどその時、南の国へ旅してた家来が帰ってきたので、呼んで話を聞きました。

　「南の国の王様は達者でいらせられたか」

　「南の国の王様は、お達者で、毎日楽しく暮らしていられます。南の国の王様は、乞食や宿無しどもを呼んで、不思議な話を集めて、自分でも話に聞いた花や鳥や蛇などを探しに行ったりしてるのです」

　Just then, his retainer, who had traveled to the south, returned home, so he called him over and asked him a story.

　The king of the southern kingdom is a good man, and he lives happily every day. The king of the southern kingdom calls beggars and homeless people, gathers up strange stories, and even goes looking for flowers, birds, and snakes that he himself has heard about.

　医者である私のもとに、半年前、肩にできた悪性腫瘍で診察に来た男がいる。

　肉腫は子供の頭ほども成長して、患者の容態もかなり悪い。

村から離れたところで、たまに通りがかる旅人くらいしか人は来ませんでした。

ある日、旅人が来たのでお茶を御馳走した所、旅人はお金を置いていこうとしました。

「そんなものはいりません」と、おばあさんはお金を受け取ろうとしません。

「こんな山の中で私はお金をもらっても使い道がありません。それより、お経を教えてくれませんか」

It was far from the village, and the only visitors were occasional travelers passing by.

One day, when a traveler came, she offered him tea, but he tried to leave her some money.

The old woman refused to accept the money, saying, "I don't need that.

She said, "I don't have any use for money in such a mountainous area. Instead, why don't you teach me the sutra?

U said, "The train stopped suddenly. A train never stops suddenly. Passengers might be injured or killed.

妹はよその男性と手紙のやりとりをしていたのであった。

夫人は、それらの手紙を読んでがく然とする。

相手の男性は、妹の病気を知った途端に手紙をよこさなくなったのであった。

気の毒に思った夫人は、あることを思いついた。

The sister had been exchanging letters with another man.

急に家の中がまっ暗になったのに、皆びっくりして、大騒ぎをしてからあかりをつけますと、

まあどうでしょう、今までお膳の上に並んでいたごちそうが、一つ残らずなくなってるではありませんか。

――そういうことが、毎晩どの家かに必ず起こってくるのです。

Once upon a time, there was a large village.

However, a strange thing happened in this village. When they returned home from the rice fields in the evening, they had prepared a variety of delicacies and were about to have a pleasant meal with all the family together, when suddenly a terrible wind blew in from somewhere and extinguished all the lamps and candles.

Everyone was startled by the sudden darkness in the house, and after a great commotion, they turned on the lights.

What a surprise to find that all the food that had been lined up on the table was now gone!

--This is something that happens every night in every house.

むかし、ギリシャの片田舎に、ケメトスという人がいました。

小さい時に両親を失って、お祖父さんの手で育てられていましたが、非常な乱暴者で、近所の子供達と喧嘩けんかをしたり、野山を駆け廻ったりして、その日その日を遊び暮らしていました。

ある日、ケメトスを心配したお祖父さんは、ケメトスに話しました。

「わしはお前が生まれた時、ほうき星を見た。長く尾を引くほうき星が落ちる瞬間に、おまえは生まれたのだ。ほうき星は縁起の悪い星だという。わしは、お前の行く末が心配でならん。おまえは悪い運命をもって生まれたのだから、人生をよくしようと思って生きていかねばならない」

Once upon a time, in rural Greece, there was a man named Kemetos.

He was very violent and spent his days fighting with the neighborhood children and running around in the fields and mountains.

One day, his grandfather, who was worried about Kemetos, told him, "When you were born, I was a law-abiding man, and when you were born, I was a law-abiding man.

I saw a broom star when you were born. I saw a broom star when you were born, and you were born at the moment the long trailing broom star fell. They say that a broom star is an unlucky star. I am worried about your future. You were born with a bad fate, so you must live your life with the intention of making it better.

日本に貿易商館を開いているスウェーデン人で、キャリソン・グスタフという大男がいた。彼は大きな図体に似合わぬ神経質であった。

ある日、彼を訪ねていくと、風邪をひいた、調子が悪いという。彼は病院で見の覚えのない病気を発見されるのが怖くて嫌だという。

私が「日本に昔からある葛根湯という薬をのんではどうだ？」というと、彼は日本の薬や医療は信じられないという。

私は、彼をからかってやろうという思いが、ムラムラとしてきた。

There was a large man named Carison Gustaf, a Swede who had a trading house in Japan. He was a nervous man, not fitting his large frame.

One day, I visited him and told him that he had caught a cold and was not feeling well. He said he didn't want to go to the hospital because he was afraid of being found with a disease he didn't know he had.

I said, "Why don't you take an old Japanese medicine called Kakkon-to? He said he did not believe in Japanese medicine or medical treatment.

I was getting horny with the thought of making fun of him.

ずっと昔のことです。ある片田舎の村に、ひょっこり一匹の猿がやって来ました。

村の広場で遊んでいた子供達は、その不思議な猿を見付けて、大騒ぎを始めました。

しかし、猿は子どもたちを気にもせず、一軒の家の庭に行くと不思議な踊りを始めました。

子どもたちが大喜びで猿の踊りを喜んでいますと、家の人が出てきて「おや、どこの猿だい？」と聞きましたが、誰も知りません。

猿は踊り終わると、米を手にして、それを指さしながら風呂敷を差し出します。

米がほしいんだな、と家の人が分けますと、また次の家へ向かいます。

次の家でも踊って、最後に風呂敷を差し出します。

そうして、風呂敷包みが米でパンパンになりますと、どこへともなく走って消えてしまいました。

It was a long time ago. A monkey suddenly came to a village in the countryside.

Children playing in the village square saw the mysterious monkey and started to make a big fuss.

However, the monkey paid no attention to the children and went to the garden of a house and started a mysterious dance.

As the children were delighted to see the monkey dancing, the man of the house came out and asked, "Oh, where is this monkey? but no one knew.

When the monkey finished dancing, he held out the furoshiki (wrapping cloth) with rice in his hand and pointed at it.

The people in the house share the rice with him, and he heads back to the next house.

At the next house, the monkey also dances, and finally offers the furoshiki.

And when the furoshiki is completely filled with rice, they run away and disappear.

昔、ある山裾に村がありました。とても平和な村で、子どもたちもみんな仲良しでした。

大人たちが田や畑に働きに出ると、子どもたちは集まって遊びます。

最近の流行りは、町からやってきたばかりの遊び、にらめっこでした。

輪になって座り込み、だるまさん、だるまさん…と歌って、笑ったものから順に抜けていきます。

そうして、最後まで残った者が勝ちです。

ある日、いつものようににらめっこをしていると、大空に大きな顔が浮かび上がって、大きな声で笑いました。

Once upon a time, there was a village at the foot of a mountain. It was a very peaceful village, and all the children were good friends.

When the adults went out to work in the fields and rice paddies, the children would gather together to play.

The latest fad was a game that had just come from the town: staring.

They sit in a circle and sing Daruma-san, Daruma-san..., and the first one to laugh gets to leave.

Then, the last one to remain wins.

One day, as we were staring at each other as usual, a big face appeared in the sky and laughed loudly.
