It’s been a bit since Tom has been with us, but he’s back on the podcast today! 

We thought it would be fun to do a little summer ‘recap’ episode, since summer is officially coming to a close. In today’s episode, we talk about anxiety and string fence, and more of what’s been happening in our lives recently. Tom dealt with the aftermath of a tornado, and has spent a lot of time branding and string fencing. He even had his first encounter with what we think was anxiety, regarding weaning cows. The weaning process has very much been a learning experience for us over the years, and we’ve definitely adjusted what has worked well (and not so well).

Today’s episode is inspired by some recent events (which is typically my MO here anyway) -  community and connection. I’ve heard (more times than I can count) the saying that is ‘it’s my burden to bear’ or ‘it’s my cross to carry’, when someone is struggling. Maybe you didn’t know this (or maybe it’s just a helpful reminder), but we are NOT meant to bear our crosses alone! We  literally need connection to help us along in life. 

In today’s episode, I talk about what it means to ‘team lift your life’, and the importance of connection and sharing struggles. We’re supposed to ‘team lift’ and help each other when life gets hard!

I’m honored to have my incredible friend, Dannel Wissler, on the podcast today!

Dannel is a farm wife and mom to 4, and she also had a deep desire to become a licensed counselor. As a licensed professional counselor, Dannel helps people address a wide variety of emotional needs and challenges. 

In today’s conversation, Dannel and I delve into cultivating resilience, fighting well, and the crucial role that mental health has on family dynamics in rural America. Dannel loves working with many different types of clients, from couples and families to first responders, and even those in the ag space. People in agriculture are incredibly strong and resilient (which is something to be proud of). But...the stigma that’s associated with this space often leads us to believe that it’s weak (or even unnecessary) to ask for help when we’re struggling with our mental health. 

We aren’t meant to suffer in our own little ‘silo’ that we’ve created; feeling like we need to hide our shortcomings and woundings from everyone but our families (who usually see the ‘uglier’ parts of us) isn’t something we can do forever either! It’s vital that we stay anchored in the present, while getting help so we can successfully move forward, and ultimately, thrive.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been really bothered about our lack of ‘why’ - like, why are we just assuming we already know #allthethings, and not being more curious about what’s going on around us? Just like with a car that’s not running properly, it’s important to get to the root of the issue and actually fix what’s wrong, instead of letting it go until it stops running all together.

In today’s episode, I talk about where is the ‘why’; we must understand that if we don’t choose to ask questions and dig into things deeper (instead of ‘playing it safe’ at the surface level), we won’t really be able to resolve anything. The lack of ‘why’ has become more of a significant issue for me after consuming one of Dr. Gabor Matè’s books, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts (linked below), all about addiction. This book really changed the game for me and has led me to become hyper aware of common behaviors, issues, etc. in our society. ALL of our problems come from some type of wounding; in order to actually repair and heal what’s happened, we should be pursuing actual solutions, not slapping on band-aids to simply cover up the problem!

In this episode, I cover:

• Understanding that if we don’t choose to ask questions or dig deeper into something, we won’t be able to truly resolve it
• What totally changed my viewpoint on our lack of ‘why’ + the hyperawareness I now have regarding many behaviors and issues in the world
• Realizing that ALL problems come from woundings that haven’t healed + why we’re going to completely miss what we’re seeing if we don’t stop and ask ‘why’

I’ve been talking a lot about attachment and attunement, and how these two pieces have dramatically impacted my parenting journey. In a recent episode, I discussed what I would do differently if I could do parenting all over again. In today’s episode, I want to talk about how attachment and attunement have transformed my parenting, and what I actually AM doing differently, knowing what I know now.

In this episode, I cover:

• How I’m now ‘feeling my feelings’, and actually acknowledging my emotions + why I’m encouraging my kids to do the same
• Why I’m choosing to hug my kids when they’re experiencing really strong emotions, instead of adding fuel to the fire by getting angry myself
• Being willing to work on our confidence and asking for support when we get frustrated

In today’s episode, I want to dig into my mind-blowing realization about emotions. When it comes to emotions, we must understand that emotions themselves are not the problem, but rather, our resistance to actually feeling them is. Emotions are very much like riding a roller coaster too (which my good friend Sheila shared here on the podcast); we can’t continually numb anger, fear, and sadness, yet still expect to fully feel emotions like happiness and joy. It may be difficult to hear, but ‘selectively’ numbing emotions just isn’t possible!

I hope this episode leaves you with a ‘light bulb’ moment - especially if you’re someone who is used to numbing certain emotions (yep, that used to be me). If this rings true for you, I really want you to get curious as to why you’re doing so. Instead of numbing, take time to recognize, feel, and accept your emotion(s), and then get ready to bring joy and happiness into your life in a BOLD, new way!

In this episode, I cover:

• Understanding that our emotions themselves are not the problem, but instead, our resistance to emotions is
• Realizing that we can’t numb emotions like fear, anger, and sadness, and still expect to feel happiness, joy, and love to the fullest

I’m very excited to welcome my great friend, Kiah Twisselman Burchett (better known as Coach Kiah), onto the podcast!

I’m very excited to welcome my ‘bestie as a guestie’, Sheila Hansen, onto the podcast!

Sheila is one of my dearest friends who’s also in Nebraska - she’s a fellow mom of 3, and a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) who’s had her own firm for 7 years (she has over 15 years experience in the accounting space though). She’s on a mission to help female owned businesses feel confident about their money and build wealth, without burnout. Sheila experienced a major identity crisis when she became a mom; over time, this led her to start her own accounting firm. As she began to delve into her life in other ways, her self-awareness and communication skills were totally revamped, which led to another significant life shift.

It can feel challenging and super uncomfortable to work through difficulties in your life, but when you choose to do so, so much GOOD comes from it too - Sheila and I both know this well! Maybe you’re struggling with knowing when to set a boundary, or you’re capping the potential for you and what is possible for your life. Whatever it is, please know that you ARE worth doing this work (regardless of how hard it may be) - the healing that awaits you on the other side is pretty incredible!
