Sharon Salzberg has had a deep impact on how meditation is practiced in the West. Actually, her influence far surpasses just the meditative community. Her teachings on loving-kindness and the Buddhist heart practices are the foundation of how we discuss kindness and compassion in the West.
Hailing from New York, Sharon studied with some of the most notable teachers of our generation, including S.N. Goenka, Munindra, Dipa Ma, Sayadaw U Pandita, and Mahasi Sayadaw. In addition to bringing the practices of mindfulness to the West in the early years, she championed the practice of metta.

Ajahn Brahm is a senior Thai Forest monk, although his monastery was stripped of its status as an official Thai Forest monastery. We discuss that more in this episode.
His teachings center on his idea of the “beautiful breath.” Unlike the first three episodes of the series, Ajahn Brahm focuses on jhana, or states of deep concentration. His teaching style is humorous, light-hearted, and centers on letting go.

S.N. Goenka is the father of modern vipassana. With over 270 meditation centers in 90 countries, Goenka has been incredibly influential. His style of mindfulness is presented as science, not Buddhism. As such, it has had the power to reach people of all religions and traditions.
Utilizing the body scan, Goenka essentially investigates the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. His technique can feel rigid at first, and the 10-day vipassana retreats can be quite intense. But this practice has helped countless people find wisdom and insight, and has inspired many aspects of Buddhism and Buddhist meditation in the West.
