As money has moved into the digital space, physical cash has become less prevalent.
Only 57.2 percent of kiwis used cash for everyday purposes in 2023, down from 95.8 percent in 2019. Those using cash tend to be among more vulnerable groups, including the young, elderly and disabled, and are more likely to live rurally.
