Ali Miller’s Picture Book, HOW CARA LOST HER COLOR, is a beautiful and moving call to action for kids and parents.
-- Learn More: hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode36 --
When Ali Miller arrived on Maui in 2015, after living in Reno, Nevada her entire life, she was shocked to see firsthand what was happening in the ocean. Her arrival to the Hawaiian island followed one of the warmest summers on record.
Corals around the world were dying in one of the largest mass bleaching events in recorded history. Without the reefs, fish populations and ocean ecosystems are at risk of collapse.
HOW CARA LOST HER COLOR is beautifully illustrated in colors inspired by Hawaiian reef fish. Through relatable characters and words that rhyme, kids connect with corals as animals and learn how vital they are to all marine species. In the story, Cara the coral polyp and her algae friend, Zoey, live happily alongside many other sea creatures who call the reef their home. But when human activity causes the ocean temperature to rise, Zoey must escape with her family and leave Cara behind.

There are many resources on what to do in Hawaii. We thought it would be just as beneficial to offer a few things not to do when you visit Hawaii.
-- Learn More: https://hawaiisbesttravel.com/episode35 --
When planning a trip to Hawaii, there is no shortage of fantastic resources of incredible things to do in Hawaii. However, just as important, there are some things that you want to make sure that you do not do when you visit Hawaii. The main thing is not showing respect.
1. Not Renting a Car
Though it may seem fun to just try and experience Hawaii without a car, it just isn’t feasible. If you’re trying to save some money don’t take it from the rental car budget line.
To fully experience the best of Hawaii you want to get out there and explore on your own and at your own pace.
One of the best ways to experience Hawaii is by renting a car and utilizing the Shaka Guide app, which is like a tour guide on your smartphone.
2. Spending All Your Time in Waikiki
Waikiki is designed to keep you happy and content not to venture out. With its world-class dining, hotels, and shopping, it is easy just to stay put in Waikiki. However, Hawaii is meant to be explored.
A day-trip to the North Shore will provide some perspective of the many wonders of Hawaii. Even a short drive over to Kailua will transport you into the beauty of Hawaii that can be hard to find in Waikiki.
3. Ignoring Warning Signs
The lifeguards genuinely care about your wellbeing and have your best interest in mind. They risk their lives every day fighting some of the craziness rip currents and surf in the world. They know what they’re doing!
When there is a warning sign of strong current or sharp coral, please pay attention. The surf in Hawaii can be unpredictable. One minute it can be calm and then the next completely different. When in doubt, don’t go out! And NEVER turn your back on the ocean and always be aware.
4. Using Chemical Sunscreen
With an average of 271 days per year of sunny days in Honolulu, there is an excellent likelihood that your stay on the islands will be mostly sunny. And the sun in Hawaii can be hotter and stronger than you may be used to.
If having to remember to put on sunscreen and reapplying isn’t your thing, then wearing a short-sleeve or long-sleeve rashguard and a hat is a great alternative.
Beginning in 2021 Hawaii will start to ban sunscreen products that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. These chemicals are known to cause bleaching and death to coral reefs.
5. Not Showing Respect
Aloha is more than a warm and fuzzy thing to say. It is a way of life. How you interact with people on island will make or break your experience.
By simply showing love and appreciation for people, in Hawaii, you will receive 10x’s back. The love and community of Hawaiians and locals is something truly unique and special.
Check out our interview with Matty Leong and Spencer Lee, a couple of professional landscape photographers, about how you can explore Hawaii responsibly.

With Margaritas Hawaii: --> http://livehawaiisbest.com/episode30 <--
Being from Southern California, I was raised on eating really great Mexican food. It's my favorite type of food. So, naturally anytime we travel to Hawaii I scout out places to eat Mexican food. However, in my opinion, it is hard to find really great Mexican food in Hawaii. That was until I ate at Margaritas Hawaii. This little hidden gem is the best Mexican food I have found in Hawaii.

In my conversation with the owners of Margaritas Hawaii, we talk about how it all started and where they got their inspiration for their dishes. Margaritas is more than a taco, burrito, and margarita place. They have done an amazing job at creating dishes that infuse Hawaiian culture.
So, next time you're on Oahu, be sure to stop by Margaritas for their epic nacho boat!

For others, traveling to Hawaii is all they can think about. No matter where you’re at, we want to help clear the air and confusion of where Hawaii is at with their reopening efforts.
On all social media platforms, there is a lot of speculating of what the new normal will be for reopening Hawaii to tourism. At the time of this writing, we do not know the specifics of what out of state travel will look like in Hawaii.
What we do know is that interisland travel, without a 14-day quarantine, will end on June 16. This gives us some hope that the next phase in travel after interisland will be out of state travel.
In this episode, you’ll learn where Hawaii is currently in its reopening plan. Bryan will also unpack his opinion on when he thinks travel will be open back up to Hawaii.

With Karalynne Call of Just Ingredients: http://livehawaiisbest.com/episode28
To be honest I’ve been off the wagon of healthy eating for a little bit. Off and on. In Ali’s conversation with Karalynne from Just Ingredients, she offers some practical tips on healthy living and eating. So much of life stems from these disciplines. I can’t think of a better way to re-prioritize during this time than by re-aligning these two things.
livehawaiisbest.com/episode28
I realize that this time may be difficult for some and uncertain when it comes to many things. My heart breaks for you, especially small businesses. However, let us not squander this time and phone-it-in for a few weeks and then pick up where we left off. Let this be a defining moment for us.
livehawaiisbest.com/episode28
Today, Karalynne offers some simple tips on how to eat and live healthily. A lot of what we talk about on Hawaii’s Best is about the places and experiences of Hawaii, and while we’ll still bring you all of that, from time to time we want to give some eco-friendly and simple living tips. Practicing eco-friendly living is just as important as home as it is when you’re in Hawaii.
