Healthy Masculinity, Teacher Burnout, Noise Pollution

Listen Later

Helping Players Develop Healthy Masculinity (0:35)
Guest: Kip Ioane, Head Coach, Men's Basketball, Willamette University
College basketball teams are getting set for the start of the season at the end of November, though the pandemic may throw a wrench in that. Back in April, we heard about the unusual viewing schedule of the Willamette University men’s basketball team. In addition to watching film of themselves and their opponents playing, they watch documentaries about masculinity. There's a Netflix documentary called “The Mask You Live In” that is one of the films Willamette University basketball coach Kip Ioane shows his players as part of a program he calls, “Teams of Men.” Other NCAA teams have started implementing the program, too. (Originally aired April 27, 2020).

Teacher Burnout (20:00)
Guest: Steve Hydon, Clinical Professor in Field Education, University of Southern California
More than half of American kids have experienced some kind of trauma. Teachers have to deal with the repercussions of that every day with many anxious, depressed, and withdrawn students. It’s exhausting some teachers to the point that they’re start showing the same symptoms. It’s like second-hand smoking, but for trauma. And this was a problem long before the pandemic hit. (Originally aired March 24, 2020).

The Tech That Changed the World in the 2010’s and What to Expect from the 2020’s (34:44)
Guest: Jason Perlow, Senior Technology Editor, ZDNet
Ten years ago–the dawn of the 2010s–the world was about to get its first glimpse of the iPad. Now we all have tablets–or phones and laptops that can act like tablets if we want. Think of all the other technology the 2010s gave us: smart watches, smart speakers, smart-everything, really, including home appliances, lights and locks. The 2010s also brought our first real taste of just how much companies like Google, Apple and Facebook know about us–how easily that data can be misused. What technology advances might the next decade bring? (Originally aired January 7, 2020).

The Body Never Lies: A Day in the Life of a Forensic Pathologist (52:58)
Guest: Judy Melinek, Forensic Pathologist, Co-Author of “Working Stiff” and “First Cut”
Even on TV, being a forensic pathologist is not glamorous. The CSI investigators suit up and collect evidence at the scene, but the forensic pathologist is the one who has to cut open the body and weigh the organs and deal with all the gore of an autopsy. Why does someone go for a job like that? (Originally aired December 11, 2019).

The Unseen Danger of Noise Pollution (1:10:07)
Guest: Erica Walker, Founder of Noise and the City, Postdoctoral Researcher, School of Public Health, Boston University
The noise on a big city street can be overwhelming, but you get used to it after a while. That’s probably why it was so eerie when everything went quiet during the pandemic lockdown. The Noise and the City project out of Boston University’s School of Public Health is working to understand how noise affects us–and how having less of it might be better for our health. (Originally aired January 7, 2020).

Citizen Scientists Can Help Save the Butterflies (1:24:21)
Guest: Mary Ellen Hannibal, Journalist, Author, and Researcher
Most of America isn’t doing much travelling right now, but Monarch butterflies sure have been. Right now, they’re arriving at their winter homes in Mexico. During butterfly migration from California to Mexico and vice versa, researchers need your help to track the migration. Sightings from everyday citizens have helped to document the decline in butterfly populations around the world, including the Monarch. (Originally aired April 14, 2020).
