Donna Adelson's Dan Markel murder trial produced a handwritten script that prosecutors said was designed to manufacture testimony against Katherine Magbanua. Drina Bernhardt testified that Donna wrote the question-and-answer material for her to study and repeat in court, and an FDLE handwriting analyst testified that Donna was the writer. 

Bernhardt said Donna offered $10,000 and a grand piano as part of the arrangement. The defense challenged Bernhardt's motives, criminal exposure, and account of how the writing happened. Jurors also heard from another jailhouse witness who claimed Donna admitted involvement in Markel's murder, an accusation Donna's lawyers contested. 

The financial evidence gave jurors another fight to resolve. Prosecutors pointed to 44 checks Donna signed to Katherine Magbanua after the murder and argued they were tied to the plot. The defense said Donna signed the checks because Charlie told her he was being extorted and she believed him. One week after Charlie's 2023 conviction, authorities arrested Donna at Miami International Airport as she and Harvey prepared to travel to Vietnam on one-way tickets. 

Wendi Adelson's section of the case carries a different kind of dispute. Jeffrey Lacasse testified that five days before Markel was shot, Wendi told him Charlie had explored "all options" for the "Danny Markel problem," including hiring a hitman for about $15,000. Wendi testified that she did not recall the conversation and denied saying it. 
Lacasse also said Wendi questioned him about his planned Friday drive and route in the days before the murder, then asked him not to contact her for a week. Wendi was home for a Geek Squad repair on the television tied to Charlie's hitman joke and denied that the TV was code. Donna was later convicted on all three counts, while Wendi remains uncharged.

Nick Reiner and Lindsay Clancy are being compared in the same online conversations because addiction, psychosis, and criminal responsibility are emotionally loaded words. The facts behind the two cases force a harder comparison than the internet usually allows. 

Reiner is accused of killing his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, in their Brentwood home. He has pleaded not guilty. A grand jury indictment adds a lying-in-wait special circumstance, an allegation prosecutors will have to prove if the case reaches trial. Long before the charges, Reiner publicly discussed repeated treatment for addiction, homelessness in several states, relapse, and an episode in which he wrecked his parents' guest house while using drugs. 

Clancy's defense did not dispute that she caused the deaths of her children. The trial question was whether postpartum psychosis left her legally unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions. Prosecutors said she remained criminally responsible. The first jury never reached a verdict, and several jurors later said eleven of them favored a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity. 

Those distinctions have not kept the argument inside a courtroom. A TikTok creator claimed a disagreement over Clancy led him to cancel a $200,000 wedding, and he described his fiancee as a monster because of her view of the case. The viral reaction showed how quickly a legal disagreement can become a verdict on another person's character. 

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Nightbird, joins Tony Brueski to examine the psychology underneath that reaction. They look at why people treat addiction and psychosis as if they carry the same information about choice. They also examine why compassion is often mistaken for excusing conduct, and why true-crime audiences can start judging each other more aggressively than they judge the evidence. 

Reiner's next hearing is set for September 15. Clancy's case remains active after the September 4 mistrial.

Lindsay Clancy's attorney was asked to address conspiracy theories accusing Patrick Clancy after the September 4 mistrial. Kevin Reddington said he had not accused Patrick, then said he did not dismiss internet investigators and praised the ability of TikTok and Instagram users to ferret out facts. Four days later, Patrick's attorney said law enforcement had been notified about what he called a destructive defamation campaign. 

Patrick was not a defendant in this case. He was the Commonwealth's first witness. He testified about Lindsay's mental-health decline, the night their children died and the 911 call he made after returning home. Lindsay's defense did not contest that she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan; it argued that severe mental illness left her without criminal responsibility. No public evidence has established that Patrick participated in the deaths. 

The online case against him has instead been built from grief, appearance and personal choices. His relocation to New York became suspicious to some users. His remarriage became suspicious. His public forgiveness of Lindsay became suspicious. Even the way he testified became material for people trying to decide whether he looked like the kind of father they expected to see. 

Tony Brueski, retired FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott pull apart that process from two directions. Dreeke looks at how choosing a suspect first can make ordinary behavior look like supposed evidence. Scott examines why people impose rigid scripts on grief and punish survivors who do not perform pain in the expected way. 

Reddington's words and Cooper's warning now sit on opposite sides of the same online storm. How much responsibility comes with feeding curiosity when real people are absorbing the consequences?

Anna Kepner’s case is heading toward a federal trial while the family around Timothy Hudson is still fighting in a separate courtroom. Shauntel Hudson is Timothy’s mother and Anna’s stepmother. She has asked a judge to enforce and recalculate child support against her ex-husband, Thomas Hudson. 

Shauntel’s filing says the support order started at $2,129 per month for three children and later dropped as fewer children remained covered. She says Thomas failed to pay for several months and argues the current amount should be revisited because she believes his earnings are higher. Thomas disputes both points, and the child-support petition is still pending. 

A federal filing explains why this family dispute carries more weight than an ordinary support argument. Timothy’s defense says it cannot finish important preparation because access to certain relatives has been limited. His lawyers are gathering information for a Miller hearing, a proceeding that requires a judge to examine a juvenile defendant’s background before life without parole can be imposed. The defense compared that work to the detailed personal-history investigation used in the sentencing phase of a capital case. 

Judge Beth Bloom granted the defense request for additional time after prosecutors did not object. The trial is scheduled for November 2, 2026, and any plea agreement is due by October 23. Timothy, who was 16 when Anna died, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and a second serious federal charge. 

The defense says family access matters to its preparation. The civil docket shows the same family arguing over payments and past parenting arrangements while Timothy remains in federal custody. By November, those separate fights may collide in one practical question: who will give the defense the history it says the federal judge may need?

Kevin Reddington says Lindsay Clancy never received a plea offer before a jury was asked to decide whether she was criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children. Because the indictment charged first-degree murder, a conviction on those counts would mean mandatory life without parole.

The trial ended without a verdict on September 4, 2026. Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial after seven days of deliberations, leaving District Attorney Timothy Cruz’s office to decide what comes next. Reddington has said he would listen if prosecutors revisit the charges and propose a resolution, but no new deal has been announced.

That unanswered criminal question now sits beside two civil lawsuits aimed at the care Lindsay received before the deaths. Patrick Clancy’s wrongful-death suit names psychiatrist Jennifer Tufts, nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta, Aster Mental Health, and South Shore Health System. Lindsay Clancy’s malpractice suit includes those defendants and additional providers. The complaints allege her care was fragmented, her worsening condition was not handled adequately, and providers failed to coordinate treatment.

Patrick’s filing says eight different medications were prescribed over a three-week period. The defense used Clancy’s psychiatric history and treatment record to support its postpartum-psychosis argument, while prosecutors maintained that she remained able to understand the wrongfulness of her conduct and control her actions.

The Lindsay Clancy mistrial came after seven days of deliberations, and the number Kevin Reddington gave outside court changed the entire retrial conversation. Reddington said the jury was split 11-1, with eleven favoring a finding that Clancy was not criminally responsible and one juror holding out. 

Reddington supplied the direction of the split; the court announced no verdict. The court did receive a foreperson's note raising concern that one juror acknowledged doubt but was not applying the reasonable-doubt instruction. Judge William Sullivan refused to remove or further question the juror, and the defense's emergency appeal to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court did not stop the mistrial. 

Tony Brueski sits down with criminal defense attorney Bob Motta to work through the pressure points left behind by that deadlock. Bob explains why eleven reported votes can matter enormously to a prosecutor without carrying the legal force of an acquittal, and why replacing a deliberating juror is one of the most sensitive moves a trial judge can make. 

The defense is also asking for another path out. Reddington said he would pursue a Rule 25 motion seeking a required finding of not guilty, which asks Sullivan to end the case without sending it to another jury. Reddington wanted that argument heard quickly and said he was ready to select a new jury almost immediately if he lost. Sullivan instead set the matter for September 29, 2026, and suggested any retrial would have to fit the court, lawyers, witnesses, and a later fall calendar.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said no retrial decision had been made on September 4. Patrick Clancy's attorney described another trial as "extraordinarily painful" for Patrick and his family. FSU law professor Dan Markel won a custody battle that kept his two sons in Tallahassee, over his ex-wife's family's objections. Prosecutors say that ruling triggered a plan: Donna Adelson, the boys' grandmother, allegedly offered Markel a million dollars to reverse it. When he refused, two men drove five hours from Miami in a rented Prius and shot him twice in the head in his own garage, the same morning he'd dropped his sons at preschool. He was 41 years old. Investigators followed the money to a family dental office near Fort Lauderdale — 44 checks signed by Donna, $138,000 routed through a woman with no job there, and a toll transponder receipt tracking the killers' entire drive. The practice belonged to Charlie Adelson, Donna's son and a Fort Lauderdale periodontist pulling in three million a year. Prosecutors say Charlie orchestrated the murder of his former brother-in-law and paid for it through his own office, with his mother signing the checks and washing the cash. At trial, Charlie claimed he was the one being extorted — that the hitmen threatened him after the fact and he paid them off in monthly installments to survive. The prosecutor asked why an extortionist would send the victim's own girlfriend, Katherine Magbanua, to pick up the money. The jury deliberated three hours before convicting him. Five people are now behind bars, and Charlie's July 2026 appeal was denied after his attorney filed the wrong motion.

Judge William Sullivan declared the mistrial on September 4, 2026, after 38 hours of deliberation. Reddington says the jury was 11-1 for not guilty. He then went on Good Morning America and asked President Trump to consider a pardon, a request he knows the president cannot grant in a state case. He told CBS Boston the goal was to seek Trump's help and described DA Tim Cruz as a hard-charging conservative he hopes will reconsider. On a plea, he said: "I would not plead Lindsay Clancy to a day in jail." On September 29 he will ask the judge for a required finding of not guilty, which means a ruling that the evidence was too weak to convict.
