  • Husband Charged with Murder 7 Years After Wife's Death on Amtrak Train
Angelo Mantych, aged 41, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, 28-year-old Marina Placensia, who passed away on an Amtrak train journey from Milwaukee to Denver in 2016. The Denver District Attorney’s office announced this following Mantych's arrest on Monday.

On August 30, 2016, the family was traveling to their new home in Denver when the tragedy unfolded. Marina Placensia was found "unresponsive" on the train on September 1, just before it arrived in Denver. A doctor on board declared her dead after her husband, Angelo Mantych, notified authorities. An arrest affidavit, reviewed by PEOPLE, stated that Mantych was visibly distressed, vomiting, and crying when officers arrived.

The arrest affidavit revealed a disturbing discovery: a "large number" of injuries and bruises on Marina Placensia's body, including her face, mouth, abdomen, and legs. An autopsy report eventually documented 35 injuries, indicating signs of assault or struggle, though her cause of death was not immediately obvious.

Angelo Mantych initially claimed that the injuries occurred during their move from Racine, Wisconsin, to Denver. However, suspicions had been raised by friends and family members, who alleged that Mantych had a history of abusing Placensia. They maintained that he should be considered a suspect.

Further investigation uncovered allegations of repeated abuse. People familiar with the couple, including friends and neighbors, reported instances of name-calling, punching, and Mantych forcing Placensia to move furniture alone while he watched during their relocation. In September 2023, Dr. Bill Smock, an expert in strangulation and suffocation, issued a report suggesting that suffocation may have been the cause of Placensia's death.

The arrest affidavit also detailed Mantych's efforts to hinder Placensia from leaving the allegedly abusive relationship. One neighbor, who claimed to have seen Placensia with bruises, reported that Mantych threatened her after finding text messages advising Placensia to leave. Despite the threats, a judge denied the neighbor's request for a protective order against Mantych.

Additionally, it was revealed that Mantych had allegedly forced Placensia to put her phone on speaker during discussions with her family members about leaving the relationship, effectively eavesdropping on their conversations.

Angelo Mantych is currently in custody at the Downtown Detention Center without bond, according to jail records. His plea status and legal representation remain unclear at this time. A court appearance for Mantych has been scheduled for November 16, where further developments in this long-awaited case may unfold.

This arrest and the troubling details surrounding Marina Placensia's death serve as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and protecting those who may be at risk in abusive relationships.

  • What Surprises Might Be Instore for New Alex Murdaugh Trial?
What twists and turns can we expect if Alex Murdaugh, a figure embroiled in scandal and crime, gets another shot in court? This burning question sets the stage for an in-depth discussion between Tony Brueski, host of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, and former defense attorney Lori Hellis, exploring the potential implications and strategies in a hypothetical second trial for Murdaugh.

Alex Murdaugh’s story is a tangled web of lies, financial crimes, and shocking revelations, making it a prime subject for legal analysts and crime enthusiasts alike. In their conversation, Brueski and Hellis dissect the prospects of a new trial, pondering whether the same defenses and arguments would resurface or if a fresh approach would be necessary.

Murdaugh’s credibility took a nosedive during the first trial when he admitted to lying about his whereabouts on the night of the crime and his involvement in substantial financial wrongdoings. Hellis highlights that “the shock factor” of these admissions would be significantly diminished in a second trial, as the revelations are now public knowledge. The defense might need to tread a different path to address the changed dynamics and the heavy character weight of negativity now associated with Murdaugh.

Delving into the details, Hellis notes that Murdaugh’s previous statements to law enforcement, particularly regarding his location at the kennels, remain a critical point of contention. The state could seize this opportunity to refine the timeline of events and strengthen the data-driven evidence. However, she also points out a potential shift in the evidentiary landscape, given Murdaugh’s guilty plea to the financial crimes in federal court. This conviction might make it easier for the prosecution to introduce information about these prior bad acts, potentially bolstering their case.

Hellis and Brueski explore the strategic decisions the defense might face, particularly regarding whether Murdaugh should take the stand again. Given his narcissistic traits, Hellis speculates that Murdaugh, feeling confident in his own testimony, might choose to testify once more, despite the potential risks and against legal advice.

The conversation shifts to the crucial aspect of time and location, focusing on the challenging task of explaining Murdaugh’s presence at the scene without implicating him in the murders. Hellis underscores the difficulty in concocting a plausible theory that accounts for his proximity while maintaining his innocence, emphasizing the need for substantial evidence to support any new narrative introduced by the defense.

Speculations abound regarding potential new elements in a second trial, including the introduction of testimony about external threats or pressures on Murdaugh. Hellis and Brueski contemplate whether such revelations would be deemed credible, questioning why such defenses were not presented during the first trial.

Hellis also sheds light on the procedural intricacies, explaining that if the first trial is invalidated, and a new trial is granted, the proceedings of the original trial would essentially be wiped clean, creating both opportunities and challenges in presenting evidence and constructing arguments.

The discussion concludes with an examination of certain evidence that might continue to tip the scales against Murdaugh, including the mysterious time lapse and steps taken at his mother’s home after the crime. Hellis theorizes possible scenarios that could fit this puzzle piece, though she acknowledges the inherent complexities and uncertainties that surround the case.

As the podcast episode comes to a close, listeners are left pondering: If Murdaugh is granted a new trial, will the truth finally emerge from this labyrinth of deception and crime, or will the case remain an enigmatic jigsaw, with pieces that never quite fit together? Only time will tell as the saga of Alex Murdaugh continues to unfold, captivating the public's attention and challenging the boundaries of legal analysis and crime-solving.

  • Yoga Instructor Accused in Love Triangle Killing Tracked Victim on Fitness App, Shot Her in Heart
The trial of yoga instructor Kaitlin Armstrong, accused of the murder of Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson, commenced with prosecutors presenting a narrative of jealousy and fatal consequences in an alleged love triangle. Wilson, a skilled cyclist, had a prior romantic involvement with Armstrong's on-and-off boyfriend, professional cyclist Colin Strickland. Prosecutors contend that Armstrong, driven by jealousy, tracked Wilson's whereabouts using a fitness app and subsequently shot her in the heart.

During opening statements, prosecutors revealed that Strickland had confronted Armstrong about her ongoing communication with Wilson, even going so far as to modify the cyclist's name in his phone contacts. The prosecution asserted that Armstrong had access to Strickland's email and Instagram accounts, allowing her to monitor their correspondence on a shared iPad.

The tragic incident unfolded while Wilson was staying with her friend Caitlin Cash. On May 10, 2022, Wilson embarked on a bike ride, meticulously documenting her journey on Strava, a workout tracking app. She also shared her exact location with Strickland via text, a decision that prosecutors claim ultimately allowed Armstrong to pinpoint her whereabouts.

On that fateful night, prosecutors allege that Armstrong confronted Wilson, firing multiple shots before delivering a fatal shot to her heart. However, the defense has argued that there is no concrete evidence linking Armstrong to the crime, emphasizing the absence of camera footage placing her at the scene. Armstrong's attorney has described the case as one built on circumstantial evidence and claimed that she is "trapped in a nightmare."

Testimony from Caitlin Cash, who discovered Wilson and alerted authorities, was emotionally charged. Cash described the heartbreaking scene, stating, "She was covered in blood. She was lying on her back. I bent down and tried to wake her up. Pretty quickly I called 911." Contrary to initial assertions, Cash clarified that Strickland and Wilson were no longer romantically involved at the time of Wilson's tragic death.

In a dramatic turn of events following the murder, Armstrong faced accusations of fleeing to Costa Rica, spending over a month evading authorities and undergoing cosmetic surgery using her sister's passport. Her yoga activities in Costa Rica eventually led to her identification and apprehension. Armstrong was returned to Texas after 43 days on the run.

Earlier this month, Armstrong was involved in another incident when she allegedly attempted to escape custody during transport to a medical appointment. Video footage captured the tense moment, as Armstrong sprinted alongside a walking track, pursued by an officer. After a brief stumble by the officer, Armstrong tried to scale a wall before being apprehended following a 10-minute chase.

The trial continues as both the prosecution and defense present their cases. The proceedings shed light on the complex web of emotions and relationships that led to this tragic event, as the courtroom awaits a verdict in this high-profile case.

  • North Dakota Woman Charged with Murder for Allegedly Poisoning Boyfriend After $30 Million Inheritance Announcement
In a shocking turn of events, a North Dakota woman, Ina Thea Kenoyer, 47, is facing class AA felony murder charges for the alleged poisoning of her boyfriend, Steven Edward Riley Jr., 51, who passed away on September 5, 2023, at a Bismarck hospital. The startling revelation came to light after an autopsy disclosed that Riley had succumbed to poisoning, specifically from ethylene glycol, the primary component of antifreeze.

According to the Minot Police Department, Kenoyer was arrested on October 30, 2023, in connection with Riley's untimely demise. The case has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many in disbelief.

Investigators suspect that Kenoyer's motive behind this alleged murder was financial gain. Riley was on the verge of receiving a substantial inheritance of $30 million and had plans to terminate his relationship with Kenoyer. Witnesses reported that Riley began feeling unwell on September 3, 2023, just days before he was supposed to meet with an attorney to formalize his inheritance. Emergency responders were summoned the following day when Riley became unresponsive, leading to his transfer to a different hospital, where he ultimately passed away.

While Kenoyer initially offered alternative explanations for Riley's condition, the autopsy results unequivocally established poisoning as the cause of death. Friends and family of the deceased contend that Kenoyer had used antifreeze to poison Riley, a claim supported by investigators. The New York Times reported that Kenoyer and Riley had been in a relationship for a decade, but Kenoyer allegedly grew distraught upon learning of Riley's intentions to end the relationship after receiving the inheritance.

Kenoyer reportedly told investigators that she intended to split the inheritance with Riley's son, asserting herself as Riley's "common law" wife due to their lengthy relationship. However, it is important to note that North Dakota does not legally recognize "common law" marriages, further complicating Kenoyer's claim.

According to the Minot Daily News, Kenoyer even proposed alternative scenarios in which Riley might have accidentally ingested antifreeze. Riley's friends have also come forward, alleging that Kenoyer had previously mentioned the idea of poisoning her boyfriend with antifreeze. Riley's deteriorating health on the same day he was supposed to meet with the attorney and receive his inheritance raised suspicions among his friends. Despite their concerns, Kenoyer assured them that Riley was merely suffering from heatstroke.

The charges against Kenoyer are particularly severe, as she faces a class AA felony murder charge, the most severe category of murder charges in North Dakota. If convicted, she could face severe legal consequences.

As the legal proceedings continue, the community is left grappling with the tragic loss of Steven Edward Riley Jr. and the startling allegations surrounding his demise. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the potential consequences of greed and jealousy, even in the most unexpected of circumstances.

  • Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Beloved Georgia Elementary School Teacher as Estranged Husband Faces Charges
A devastating incident unfolded in Dallas, Georgia, over the weekend as a beloved elementary school teacher lost her life in a domestic dispute. Jasmyn Victoria Lambert, a 37-year-old third-grade teacher at Still Elementary School in the Cobb County School District, was fatally shot in her own home. Her estranged husband, 42-year-old Tyrone Victor Lambert, now faces multiple charges, including murder and cruelty to children.

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office reported that the tragic event occurred when a witness called 911 around midnight on Saturday to report a domestic dispute and home invasion. According to the witness, Tyrone Lambert forcibly entered the residence through the back door and proceeded to threaten multiple individuals with a firearm.

Upon realizing that 911 had been called, Tyrone Lambert fled the scene on foot. Authorities immediately initiated the process of obtaining an arrest warrant and issued a "be on the lookout" alert for him and his vehicle to other law enforcement agencies.

However, the situation took a harrowing turn when a witness made another call to police at approximately 7:12 a.m. to report that Tyrone Lambert had returned to the home with a firearm, once again entering through the same back door. Deputies who arrived at the scene heard gunshots before entering the residence and apprehending Lambert outside.

Inside the home, they discovered Jasmyn Lambert with a gunshot wound. She was promptly transported to a hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries. Tyrone Lambert was taken into custody on suspicion of murder (family violence), malice murder, home invasion, criminal damage, cruelty to children, criminal trespass, possession of a firearm, aggravated assault, and obstruction, as per inmate records.

In a statement, the Cobb County School District expressed its deep sorrow over the loss of Jasmyn Lambert, saying, "Jasmyn Lambert's big smile was welcoming to all, her classroom couldn't wait to see her every day. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and the entire Still community who already miss her."

It was revealed that a protective order had been filed against Tyrone Lambert, although it had expired at the time of the incident. Authorities have indicated that as the investigation progresses, additional charges may be filed in connection with this tragic and heart-wrenching case.

The community mourns the loss of a dedicated educator and beloved member of Still Elementary School, while law enforcement continues to work diligently to ensure justice is served in this devastating case.

  • Lawsuit Filed Against Colorado Funeral Home Alleging Fake Ashes Scandal
A Colorado funeral home is facing a lawsuit after allegations surfaced that the owners allowed bodies to decompose while providing families with counterfeit ashes. The lawsuit, filed by Richard Law, claims that Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose, Colorado, was involved in a disturbing scandal that affected numerous families.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently uncovered a shocking discovery at the funeral home, revealing at least 189 improperly stored bodies in a building owned by the establishment. Authorities have warned that this number could change as the investigation continues and the process of identifying the victims progresses.

"In death, these men and women deserved to be treated with respect and dignity," said plaintiff attorney Andrew Swan. "Instead, they were defiled."

Richard Law's involvement in the lawsuit stems from his experience entrusting his late father, Roger Law, to the care of the funeral home back in 2020. The funeral home was supposed to cremate Roger Law and provide his ashes to his son. However, recent revelations suggest that Roger's body was among the many found in the funeral home's building.

"Nearly three years after his death, Roger still has never been cremated. Instead, he was allowed to decompose in squalid conditions," the complaint stated. "Roger deserved better. So did the other 188 victims found at the Penrose property."

The shocking discovery came to light when locals in the area reported an abhorrent smell emanating from the property. Co-defendant Jon Hallford allegedly attempted to attribute the smell to his taxidermy hobby but was unsuccessful in doing so.

The lawsuit alleges that the funeral home owners not only allowed bodies to decompose improperly but also provided families with counterfeit ashes and falsified death certificates. Other families who have come forward with their concerns have noted that the material they received as ashes seemed similar to dry concrete.
A family member, Tanya Wilson, shared with KDRO her experience of conducting a side-by-side test. She mixed water separately with Quikrete and the purported ashes that were claimed to belong to her mother, Yong Anderson. Wilson reported, "The reaction, it looked very, very similar, the consistency and everything. Then, when it dried, it dried into little tiny rocks, very, very similar. It gave me confirmation that I believe it's concrete."

Colorado is unique in that it does not require professionals in the funeral home and crematory industry to be licensed. Return to Nature Funeral Home reportedly operated with an expired license, raising concerns about regulatory oversight.

Attorney Andrew Swan criticized the lax regulatory status quo in the state and called for stronger enforcement mechanisms and more rigorous inspections. While he expressed confidence in the ongoing criminal investigation, he emphasized the importance of a lawsuit like this in holding accountable those responsible for such misconduct.

Richard Law, the plaintiff in the lawsuit, has shown dedication to the case despite the emotional toll it has taken. "He takes a lot of satisfaction in standing up to this misconduct on behalf of other families," Swan said.

Efforts to reach Return to Nature Funeral Home for comment have been unsuccessful, with their website down and a linked phone number out of service. The FBI is also involved in the investigation, further underscoring the severity of the situation.

  • New York Man Arrested for Pointing Gun at Child Over Halloween Goody Bag Mix-Up
A shocking incident in Manhasset, New York, has led to the arrest of a 43-year-old man, Michael Yifan Wen, who allegedly pointed a gun at a 6-year-old child. The incident stemmed from a Halloween goody bag mix-up, leaving the community in disbelief.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, on the evening of October 28, a 42-year-old mother, along with her daughter, two sons, and nephew, visited a home on Rockcrest Road, approximately 20 miles east of Manhattan. Their purpose was to drop off a Halloween goody bag filled with candy for her daughter's friend.

The daughter and her 6-year-old brother approached the house, rang the doorbell, and left the treats on the front porch. However, they soon realized they might have chosen the wrong address. The mother turned the car around and stopped once again in front of the Rockcrest Road house.

As the 6-year-old went back to retrieve the goody bag, the front door opened, and Michael Yifan Wen stepped out, allegedly pointing a black handgun at the child's head while yelling, "Get the f— off my property." This terrifying encounter left the community deeply shaken.

Residents in the area believed the children were participating in a harmless Halloween tradition called "ghosting," where kids ring a friend's doorbell and leave a bag of treats on the porch. The incident, however, took a disturbing turn.

Wen's attorney, William Zou, offered an explanation, characterizing the incident as a misunderstanding. He stated, "I think what happened yesterday was totally a misunderstanding and a mistake. He and his family have been terrorized recently by constant banging on his door. He just opened the door [and] reacted strongly, telling the person to get away from his property. By the time he realized it was a kid, he started to regret."

Wen pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, and his next hearing is scheduled for November 13. The charges against him include one count of second-degree menacing and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

The Manhasset community expressed shock and dismay over the incident, with one resident describing it as "terrible" and "horrific." Parents and neighbors are discussing the incident, which has raised concerns and left many unsettled.

As the legal process unfolds, the case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of communication and restraint in tense situations. The Halloween goody bag mix-up, initially thought to be a playful tradition, took a distressing turn, highlighting the need for understanding and vigilance in our communities.Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? • Armed Intruder Found Dead at Colorado Amusement Park with Explosives; Authorities Investigate Possible Suicide
A disturbing incident unfolded at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Colorado over the weekend when a heavily armed 22-year-old man was discovered dead on the park premises. The incident occurred before the park opened to the public, sending shockwaves through the community.

The Garfield County Sheriff's Office initially responded to a report of a deceased male on Saturday morning. In an updated news release on Monday, the authorities revealed that the man had entered the park after hours when no employees were present. The individual's identity has not been disclosed.

Although the news release did not specify the cause of death, a statement from the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, shared with PEOPLE, indicated that the Garfield County Coroner was investigating the death as a suicide.

What set this incident apart was the heavily armed nature of the intruder. According to the sheriff's office, the individual was dressed in black tactical clothing, bearing patches that resembled law enforcement emblems. He was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a semi-automatic handgun, both loaded with multiple magazines. Additionally, he was wearing body armor and what appeared to be a ballistic helmet.

Perhaps most concerning, authorities discovered several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) with the suspect and in a van associated with him. The Grand Junction Bomb Squad swiftly arrived at the scene, successfully rendering the devices safe. They also conducted a thorough sweep of the park, ensuring no additional IEDs were planted on the premises or the rides.

The sheriff's office emphasized that their investigation indicated no immediate risk to the public, with the suspect's actions appearing to be confined to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. Authorities also conducted a search of the suspect's residence, located in the Carbondale area, as part of their ongoing investigation to assess the extent of his criminal activity.

Sheriff's officials expressed deep concern over the situation, stating, "Given the amount of weaponry, ammunition, and explosive devices found, the suspect could have implemented an attack of devastating proportions on our community and first responders."

Nancy Heard, the theme park's general manager, conveyed her gratitude to the Garfield County Sheriff's Department and other authorities for their swift response and thorough work. She also reassured the community about the park's safety measures, noting, "Multiple security programs are in place, including an extensive network of security cameras, alarms, fencing, gates, and posted signage. The incident on October 28 did not take place in any of these areas and was not related to any rides or attractions."

As the investigation remains active, residents and visitors to the area are left with many questions about the motivations and intentions of the deceased intruder. Authorities are working diligently to provide answers and ensure the community's safety.

  • Tragedy Strikes Milwaukee: 5-Year-Old Prince McCree Found Dead, Homicide Investigation Underway
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Milwaukee community is grappling with the tragic loss of 5-year-old Prince McCree, whose disappearance on Wednesday led to a harrowing discovery on Thursday morning. The young boy was found lifeless in a dumpster, just a mile away from his home in the Uptown neighborhood, sending shockwaves through the city.

Milwaukee police swiftly launched a homicide investigation, aiming to uncover the circumstances surrounding Prince's death. At present, authorities are working tirelessly to determine the cause of the young boy's untimely demise, leaving many questions unanswered.

As the investigation unfolds, two individuals have been taken into custody by the Milwaukee police. Among them are a 27-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy, both considered persons of interest in this deeply distressing case. The exact relationship between these individuals and Prince McCree's family remains unclear.

Local State Senator LaTonya Johnson, also a neighbor of the McCree family, expressed the shock and sorrow gripping the community. She disclosed that Prince's parents spent a sleepless night knocking on doors in the neighborhood, desperately seeking any information that could lead to their son's safe return.

"They were distraught," Senator Johnson said, "It was a shock. This neighborhood is relatively quiet. You don't see a lot of police activity. We knew it was something serious."

The community rallied behind the McCree family after Prince was reported missing on Wednesday. A "critically missing" alert was issued to media outlets, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and mobilizing the public to assist in the search.

Marie Stillo, a cousin of Prince's mother, spoke fondly of the 5-year-old, saying, "He was just the sweetest little boy." She shared that Prince adored his siblings, had a deep love for learning, superheroes, and was enchanted by the popular children's song, "Baby Shark." Additionally, Prince had recently lost his second baby tooth, marking a milestone in his young life.

In memory of Prince McCree, who had just started elementary school, a vigil is being organized by the community to honor his memory and support his grieving family. To help the family cope with the tragic loss and provide a proper farewell to Prince, Marie Stillo initiated a GoFundMe campaign.

The GoFundMe's description states, "We aim to provide Prince with a funeral and headstone that he deserves, and to help his mom and dad with whatever they may need during this difficult time."

The entire Milwaukee community stands united in grief and solidarity with the McCree family during this incomprehensibly difficult period. As the investigation progresses, residents are hopeful that answers will emerge to bring closure to the tragic loss of young Prince McCree.

  • "Michael Myers" Masked Robbery Suspects Arrested After Attacks in Omaha
A bizarre and terrifying series of attacks unfolded in Omaha as a 20-year-old male and a 17-year-old female allegedly dressed as the iconic horror character Michael Myers from the "Halloween" movie franchise attacked multiple people with a hammer and robbed them. The suspects were taken into custody following a spree of violence that left victims traumatized.*

Omaha Police responded to a flurry of calls on the evening of October 23, reporting a string of robberies and suspicious incidents between 6:11 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. Each victim recounted a horrifying encounter with a masked assailant resembling Michael Myers, who wielded a hammer and robbed them.

The suspect, described as a man, drove a gray or silver sedan during the attacks. One victim, a 79-year-old individual, suffered "bleeding facial injuries" during the assault, and his wallet was stolen. The suspects attempted to rob four individuals, successfully taking items from two of them.

Omaha Police initiated a swift response, leading to a breakthrough in the case. On October 25, officers located the suspect's vehicle and took 20-year-old Jorden Payne into custody. Payne faces two counts of robbery and two counts of attempted robbery.

Additionally, a 17-year-old, believed to be Payne's girlfriend, was apprehended and faces charges of two counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery, and one count of criminal mischief. Reports suggest that the teenage suspect may have acted as the getaway driver following the robberies.

The victims' ordeals included stolen cellphones and wallets, and in one instance, a victim was chased by a masked assailant. Upon returning to his vehicle, the victim discovered that his car window had been smashed.

This disturbing incident has left the Omaha community in shock. While the motives behind these attacks remain unclear, the arrest of the suspects provides some relief to those affected by the horrifying encounters.

The arrest of Jorden Payne and his alleged accomplice underscores the swift and effective response of law enforcement in addressing crimes that threaten public safety. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to provide support to the victims and shed light on the motives behind these unnerving attacks.

This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement, ensuring communities remain safe and secure from potential threats.
