  • "Aggressive and Unsettling”: Former Co-Workers Reveal Alarming Behavior of Suspected Gilgo Beach Killer Rex Heuermann
Former colleagues of Rex Heuermann, the architect charged with multiple murders in the Gilgo Beach case, have come forward with disturbing accounts of his behavior, describing him as “aggressive” and unsettling, intensifying the dark cloud surrounding the high-profile case.

Jeffrey St. Arromand, a luxury real estate salesman who worked with Heuermann, detailed his daunting experiences to Andrea Canning on a “Dateline” episode. “He was very assertive, maybe even leaning to the point of being aggressive,” St. Arromand expressed, highlighting a deeply concerning aspect of Heuermann’s demeanor. His revelations shed light on the suspect's character, contrasting starkly with his professional persona as a knowledgeable architect.

The discomfort among Heuermann's colleagues was palpable, with one individual reportedly avoiding the office to escape his presence. “She just didn’t feel comfortable with him at all,” St. Arromand recalled, echoing a sentiment of fear that has become a recurring theme in discussions about Heuermann.

Despite his aggressive nature at work, Heuermann’s personal life presented a contradiction. Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of New York City’s building codes, he lived in a dilapidated house in Massapequa Park, only a short distance from where the bodies of his alleged victims were discovered.

Heuermann, 59, has pleaded not guilty to the murders of Melissa Barthlemey, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello. Additionally, he is the prime suspect in the killing of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, with police continuing to investigate his potential involvement in other crimes.

Former co-worker Mary Shell’s statement to “Dateline” resonated with a sense of fear and anger, particularly among women. “The idea that, as a woman, you have to be suspicious and be afraid all the time just to stay alive is enraging,” she said, reflecting a broader societal concern about women's safety.

The chilling revelations about Heuermann come as the “Dateline” special “The Hunt for the Gilgo Beach Killer” aired Friday night on Dateline, coinciding with the unexpected resignation of Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison. His departure from the department, only a few months into the renewed investigation adds another layer of complexity to the already convoluted case.

As the community grapples with these revelations, the case against Heuermann continues to develop, casting a somber light on the realities of criminal behavior and its impact on society. The “Dateline” special promises to delve deeper into the enigmatic and disturbing narrative of the Gilgo Beach killings, a case that has captivated and horrified the nation.

  • Australian Woman Now Charged with Poisoning Ex-Husband's Family with Mushrooms
Erin Patterson, the host of a weekend family lunch at her Australian country home, faces charges of murdering her ex-husband's parents and aunt with poisonous mushrooms and attempting to murder a fourth guest, according to police reports.

The alleged incident occurred in the Victoria state town of Leongatha, where on July 29, Patterson invited her former husband's parents, Gail and Don Patterson, both aged 70, and Gail Patterson's sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66, along with Heather's husband, Ian Wilkinson, 68, for a family lunch.

Tragically, all four guests fell seriously ill the following day, and only Ian Wilkinson managed to survive. The symptoms exhibited by the victims were consistent with poisoning from wild Amanita phalloides, commonly known as death cap mushrooms.

Patterson, 49, has publicly denied any wrongdoing, expressing her grief and shock. "I'm devastated. I loved them. I can't believe that this has happened, and I'm so sorry," she tearfully told reporters two days after the third death.

In addition to the murder charges, Patterson has been accused of attempting to murder her ex-husband, Simon Patterson, 48. Simon had fallen ill after consuming meals prepared by Erin in 2021 and 2022, though he did not attend the July lunch.

According to a police statement, Erin Patterson was arrested and taken into custody at her home. She had cooked a beef Wellington steak dish for the ill-fated lunch, using mushrooms purchased from a major supermarket chain and dried mushrooms from an Asian grocery store. She herself had consumed the meal and later experienced stomach pains and diarrhea.

Ian Wilkinson, a Baptist pastor, was discharged from the hospital in late September and is reportedly continuing his recovery.

Murder in Victoria carries a maximum potential sentence of 25 years in prison. Erin Patterson was expected to remain in police custody until her scheduled court appearance on Friday, where she could potentially seek bail.

It is important to note that bail requests for defendants charged with murder are typically referred to a higher court for consideration, indicating that Patterson may face a lengthy legal process ahead as the case unfolds. The incident has shocked the community and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the alleged poisoning, which will undoubtedly be a focus of the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.

  • Alleged Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Receives Rare Visit from Estranged Wife in Jail
In a surprising turn of events, Rex A. Heuermann, the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer, received a visit from his estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead on Wednesday. This visit, confirmed by Ellerup's divorce attorney, Bob Macedonio, marks the first time she has visited Heuermann since filing for divorce just six days after his arrest on first- and second-degree murder charges in connection with the killings of three women.

"I can confirm that Asa did visit with Rex yesterday," stated Macedonio in response to inquiries. However, he did not provide any further comments regarding the visit. On the other hand, jail spokesperson Victoria DiStefano neither denied nor confirmed Ellerup's visit but did mention, "As per policy, we do not release the names of visitors, but I can confirm that Rex Heuermann received a visit yesterday."

Heuermann's defense attorney, Michael J. Brown, has not responded to messages seeking comment on this unexpected visit. Brown had previously mentioned that Ellerup had been in telephonic communication with Heuermann while he has been incarcerated.

The 60-year-old former Manhattan architect has been held without bail since his arrest in connection with the killings of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Lynn Costello. All three women's remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach more than a decade ago. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to these charges.

Prosecutors have further implicated Heuermann as the prime suspect in the slaying of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, whose remains were discovered alongside those of the other three victims. All four women, who were sex workers, were among the first of 10 sets of remains found along Ocean Parkway, believed to be the work of one or more serial killers.

Despite the ongoing legal battles and the gravity of the charges, Heuermann is not contesting the divorce proceedings initiated by Ellerup, which are still pending.

The unexpected visit raises questions about the relationship between Heuermann and Ellerup, who chose to file for divorce shortly after her husband's arrest. Legal experts speculate on the nature of their conversations during this visit and how it might impact the pending murder trial. While details of the meeting remain confidential, it adds another layer of intrigue to a case that has captivated public attention for over a decade.

As the legal proceedings continue, the Gilgo Beach serial killer case remains a gripping and complex mystery, with Heuermann's visit from his estranged wife being the latest development in a saga that has spanned more than 13 years.

  • Florida Mother Charged with Aggravated Assault After Allegedly Attempting to Hit School Staff Member
A 42-year-old mother from Florida is facing criminal charges following an alarming incident at Port Charlotte High School. Tarajayne Samuels-Catalan is accused of attempting to strike a high school staff member with her vehicle during a morning drop-off on November 2, leaving the school community in shock.

According to authorities, the incident unfolded when Samuels-Catalan tried to exit the school's parking lot by going in the wrong direction. A staff member promptly intervened, informing her that she could not use that exit due to incoming school buses.

The situation escalated as an exchange between Samuels-Catalan and the staff member unfolded. Eventually, she reversed her vehicle and appeared to be complying with the instructions. However, a school bus had to wait for her to clear the way.

When the bus finally passed, the situation took a dangerous turn. Samuels-Catalan suddenly accelerated her vehicle toward the staff member, revving the engine and putting him in immediate danger. In a desperate bid to avoid the oncoming vehicle, the staff member had no choice but to dive into nearby bushes.

The shaken staff member quickly reported the incident, providing crucial details, including the suspect's license plate. An investigation was promptly launched, and authorities were able to corroborate the incident with the help of a witness and security footage.

Samuels-Catalan, however, denied any intention to harm the staff member and claimed that her preference for using the entry area was to avoid speed bumps that could damage her vehicle.

Sheriff Bill Prummell of Charlotte County emphasized the importance of safety in school zones, saying, "The pick-up and drop-off lines at the schools are frustrating at times, but we absolutely will not cut corners on ensuring the safety of the students and staff. I am glad that our victim here is uninjured, and I hope that this mother rethinks the example she is setting for her child."

As a result of her actions, Samuels-Catalan has been charged with aggravated assault on a public or private education employee. She is currently being held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for patience and caution in school zones, where the safety of students and staff should always take precedence. Authorities are actively working to ensure the security of educational environments, and incidents like these are taken seriously to maintain a safe learning environment for all.

  • South Carolina Court Clerk Denies Jury Tampering Allegations in Alex Murdaugh Case
In a pivotal development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Alex Murdaugh, the South Carolina court clerk, Rebecca "Becky" Hill, at the center of allegations of jury tampering has emphatically denied the accusations under oath. These allegations are part of Murdaugh's bid for a new trial following his conviction in March for the murder of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, in June 2021.

Murdaugh's legal team had sought a new trial based on claims of jury tampering, which prompted the South Carolina Court of Appeals to suspend his conviction appeal and return the case to the circuit court for consideration.

Last month, Murdaugh's defense attorneys requested an evidentiary hearing on their allegations of jury tampering. These allegations include assertions that Clerk of Court Becky Hill influenced the jury to disregard Murdaugh's testimony and other defense evidence, pressured them to reach a quick guilty verdict, and misrepresented information to have a juror removed.

In a signed affidavit, Hill categorically denied 26 specific allegations outlined in Murdaugh's motion for a new trial. She refuted statements attributed to her, such as instructing the jury to scrutinize Murdaugh's movements or warning them not to be distracted by certain evidence.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and state prosecutors have strongly opposed Murdaugh's motion for a new trial. Their response states, "Never does the law permit highly motivated convicts to put their own jury on trial." They emphasize that Murdaugh's claims lack sufficient merit.

The state's filing also highlights the ongoing investigation, revealing that most jurors and the final alternate juror have been interviewed by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). According to the filing, none of the interviewed jurors reported feeling pressured or influenced in their verdict.

However, one juror declined to be interviewed, and two jurors represented by an attorney have not yet consented to unconditional interviews with SLED.

The state's response underscores that Murdaugh's evidence largely consists of affidavits from one deliberating juror, one juror removed for concealing improper communications, and two hearsay affidavits from his legal team's paralegal. The state characterizes Murdaugh's claims as part of a "sweeping conspiratorial theory" with limited supporting evidence.

The filing concludes that if the motion for a new trial is not denied outright, a hearing should be conducted where all jurors would testify under oath regarding the jury tampering allegations.

When approached by CNN, Murdaugh's legal team did not provide any comment regarding the state's response.

Justin Bamberg, an attorney representing Becky Hill, stated, "We have fully respected the investigatory process, which was tough given the horrible things said about Mrs. Hill on Alex Murdaugh's behalf." He firmly denied any tampering allegations and the possibility of criminal charges against Hill.

  • Wisconsin Woman Sentenced to Prison for Stabbing Ex-Boyfriend 19 Times in His Sleep
Morgan Taylor Lund, a 22-year-old Wisconsin woman, has been sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for a shocking crime in which she stabbed her ex-boyfriend 19 times while he slept. The court also ordered her to serve five years of extended supervision for an aggravated battery charge and an additional five years of probation for second-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Lund had previously pleaded no contest to these charges in August, leading to her sentencing.

The horrific incident took place in Winnebago County, where authorities reported that Lund used a pair of scissors to stab her ex-boyfriend repeatedly as he slept. The victim, who miraculously survived the attack, confronted Lund immediately afterward, demanding an explanation for her actions.

Documents indicate that he exclaimed, "What the f— is wrong with you? Why in my sleep, bro?"
In response, Lund reportedly claimed, "I thought I saw something."

A responding officer arrived at a gruesome scene, where Lund was found with blood on her, applying pressure to the victim's upper chest or right shoulder area. She appeared to be wearing only an oversized blue UCLA sweatshirt.

The relationship between Lund and her ex-boyfriend had been marked by contention and allegations of physical abuse. Although they shared a child and lived together, their daily arguments had escalated to the point where the victim sought to disengage from the relationship, which had ended one to two months before the stabbing.

Despite their troubled history, the victim expressed confusion about Lund's motives for the attack, especially in front of their daughter. According to documents, there had been no recent incidents between them the night before the stabbing. While Lund had previously made threats, there were no indications of threats to his life.

Lund's initial defense was a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. She claimed to have been seeing a dark, non-human "figure" for approximately six months to a year leading up to the incident. Court documents recount her recollection of waking up around 6:30 AM with her baby in the room and experiencing trouble sleeping. She later moved the baby to a playpen in the living room where the victim was sleeping on the couch.

Lund stated that she had a muddled memory of a scenario where she believed her ex-boyfriend was yelling at their daughter. In her account, she saw a dark, ominous figure attacking him and reached for a pair of scissors to defend him. It was only when the victim began screaming and fighting back that she realized she was injuring him. She promptly put down the scissors and attempted to provide first aid.

The court's decision to sentence Lund to prison reflects the gravity of her actions, despite her claims of hallucinations and delusions. The victim's survival and the shocking nature of the crime have garnered significant public attention.

This case serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding mental health issues and their intersection with criminal behavior, prompting further discussions on the need for mental health support and intervention.

  • Pennsylvania Nurse Faces New Charges for Alleged Insulin Poisoning of Patients
A Pennsylvania nurse, Heather Pressdee, already facing multiple felony charges for alleged harm to patients under her care, now finds herself confronted with dozens of new criminal charges. These charges accuse her of intentionally administering excessive doses of insulin to 22 patients between 2020 and her arrest in May 2023. The allegations extend beyond her initial accusations of killing two patients and attempting to kill a third while working at Quality Life Services in Chicora, a small town in the western part of the state.

In a recent press release, Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry disclosed that Pressdee stands accused of poisoning an additional 19 patients, resulting in the alleged deaths of 17 of those patients while under her care. The charges assert that Pressdee administered substantial amounts of insulin, regardless of the patient's diabetic status. Some of these patients required insulin to manage diabetes, while others did not have diabetes at all.

"The allegations against Ms. Pressdee are disturbing," said Attorney General Henry in the press release. "It is hard to comprehend how a nurse, trusted to care for her patients, could choose to deliberately and systematically harm them. The damage done to the victims and their loved ones cannot be overstated. Every person in a medical or care facility should feel safe and cared for, and my office will work tirelessly to hold the defendant accountable for her crimes and protect care-dependent Pennsylvanians from future harm."

These alleged insulin poisoning incidents occurred while Pressdee worked as a registered nurse at several healthcare facilities, including Concordia at Rebecca Residence, Belair Healthcare and Rehabilitation (Guardian), Quality Life Services Chicora, Premier Armstrong Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, and Sunnyview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Authorities believe Pressdee often administered excessive insulin doses during her overnight shifts, when staffing levels were lower, and the resulting medical emergencies were less likely to lead to immediate hospitalization.

Pressdee had previously claimed to have admitted to some of the incidents, stating that she "felt bad for their quality of life and had hoped that they would just slip into a coma and pass away," as per the initial criminal complaint. However, prosecutors dismissed this explanation.

Investigators uncovered Pressdee's history of disciplinary actions for abusive behavior toward patients and staff dating back to 2018. These incidents ultimately led to her being fired or resigning from various healthcare facilities.

The victims involved in this case ranged from 43 to 104 years old.

Pressdee had previously faced charges including two counts of homicide, one count of attempted murder, one count of aggravated assault, three counts of neglect of a care-dependent person, and three counts of reckless endangerment. The recent charges, announced on Thursday, include two counts of first-degree murder, 17 additional counts of attempted murder, and 19 additional counts of neglect of a care-dependent person.

The attorney general's office clarified that the charging decisions were based on the availability of "physical evidence" to support the cause of death. "Attempted murder is charged in the cases where the victims either survived the excessive dosage of insulin, or the cause of death could not be determined," the press release explained.

This case serves as a chilling reminder of the importance of vigilant oversight and accountability in healthcare settings to ensure the safety and well-being of patients.

  • Florida Dentist Testifies in Murder-for-Hire Trial: Claims He was Extorted
In a high-profile murder-for-hire trial that has captivated the nation, Florida dentist Charles Adelson took the stand on Friday, testifying that he never explained to authorities that he was a victim of extortion rather than the mastermind behind the 2014 murder of his ex-brother-in-law, Dan Markel. Prosecutors allege that Adelson paid to have Markel killed following a bitter custody battle with Adelson's sister, Wendi. Adelson contends investigators misunderstood the situation, and he remained silent out of fear for his life.

Nine years after the murder of Dan Markel, a prominent Florida State University law professor, Adelson admitted under questioning by his lawyer on Thursday that he paid the killers money after the fact, but he claimed it was because he was under threat. The link between Adelson and the killers was his ex-girlfriend, Katherine Magbanua, who informed Adelson shortly after the murder that her friends were the perpetrators and demanded over $300,000 within 48 hours to spare his life.

Prosecutor Georgia Cappleman attempted to cast doubt on Adelson's story during Friday's testimony. She questioned the circumstances of Adelson's financial transactions with Magbanua, pointing out that he willingly handed over $138,000 in cash without any apparent coercion. Additionally, Cappleman noted that Adelson spent the night with Magbanua after the exchange and continued to give her expensive gifts, put her on his family's dentistry payroll, and provided her with a monthly payment of $3,000 to pass on to the extortionists.

"Do extortionists send a girlfriend of their victim to collect their extortion money? Is that the way it’s done?" Cappleman asked sarcastically.

Cappleman also highlighted the fact that Adelson maintained a sexual relationship with Magbanua months after the murder and expressed his love for her through text messages. Adelson defended his actions, stating that he believed Magbanua was not involved in orchestrating the extortion plot and that she was safeguarding him from the real killers. He described the monthly payments as a form of life insurance that he believed kept him alive.

"I didn’t get killed, I didn’t get robbed. The extortion never went up. She was protecting me," Adelson asserted.

Prosecutors argue that Adelson paid to have Dan Markel murdered, with Magbanua allegedly hiring hitman Sigfredo Garcia, the father of her children, to carry out the act. Garcia, in turn, enlisted the help of his childhood friend, Luis Rivera. Both Magbanua and Garcia were convicted of first-degree murder, while Rivera is serving a 19-year sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for testifying against Garcia and Magbanua.

Charles Adelson currently faces charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation of murder. The trial has centered around the contentious custody battle between Markel and Wendi Adelson, Charles Adelson's sister. Markel and Wendi Adelson were divorced and shared custody of their children. A judge had ruled against Wendi Adelson's wish to relocate with the children to South Florida, leading to tensions.

During his testimony, Adelson revealed that his family had offered Markel $1 million to move to South Florida, with Adelson himself offering to pay one-third of the cost. He disclosed these details to Magbanua, who later informed Garcia. Adelson insisted that he believed Garcia and Rivera acted independently and that Magbanua was innocent, even after her arrest in 2016. It was only during her trial three years later that Adelson realized her involvement in the plot.

The trial has drawn significant attention due to its complex web of relationships and the tragic circumstances surrounding the murder of Dan Markel, a respected law professor and scholar.

  • Crime Spikes when Daylight Saving Time Ends, Study Finds
A recent study by Vivint, a smart home company, has shed light on a concerning trend in the United States: a surge in various types of crimes following the end of daylight saving time (DST). Based on FBI data recorded between 2017 and 2021, the study reveals alarming statistics and suggests potential solutions to address the issue.

The study's findings indicate a consistent increase in both the percentage and total number of crimes committed in the weeks following the transition from DST. Notably, robberies saw a staggering 64.4% spike in likelihood, while vehicle thefts followed closely with a 61% increase in probability. The raw rise in robberies amounted to a startling 81%.

Break-ins also witnessed a 16% surge during this period. However, homes equipped with security systems experienced significantly fewer burglaries compared to unprotected residences.

These findings align with previous research that suggests maintaining daylight saving time throughout the year could reduce specific crimes, especially robberies, by extending evening daylight hours. A 2015 study by the Brookings Institution revealed that eliminating the practice of "falling back" could potentially reduce robberies by 27%, as criminals are less likely to strike in well-lit environments.

Furthermore, a 2012 study by Jennifer Doleac and Nicholas Sanders found that robberies, murders, and rapes all decreased following the "spring forward" transition, emphasizing the importance of adequate daylight in crime deterrence.

Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, commented on the study's implications, saying, "Most crimes happen under the cover of darkness, that’s why things like broad daylight shootings are so shocking to the public." He also noted that many burglaries occur when people leave their homes for work or school, often in the morning when it is still dark after turning the clocks back.

To address the increased crime risk after DST ends, the Vivint team recommends taking proactive security measures, including installing exterior lighting, ensuring windows and doors are locked, and closing curtains and blinds at night.

The issue of biannual clock changes has also gained attention in the U.S. Senate, where the Sunshine Protection Act was introduced last year. The proposed legislation aims to eliminate the need to "fall back" every November and make daylight saving time permanent. Senator Marco Rubio, who introduced the bill, described the practice of changing clocks as "obsolete, confusing, and unhealthy."

Senator Rubio cited the Brookings Institution's research on robberies and argued that year-round daylight saving time would not only reduce crime but also lower car accidents, boost the economy, and mitigate seasonal depression and other illnesses. "We feel safer when we’re walking in the daylight, and it’s easy to imagine why light might have a deterrent effect on crime: offenders know they’re more likely to be recognized and get caught if they’re fully visible," the Brookings researchers noted.

Despite the potential benefits, the House of Representatives has yet to pass the Sunshine Protection Act. Senator Rubio remains optimistic, stating, "This Congress, I hope that we can finally get this done."

As clocks officially turned back at 2 a.m. on Sunday, concerns about the consequences of falling back have again come to the forefront of public discourse. The study by Vivint serves as a stark reminder of the need to address the impact of daylight-saving time transitions on crime rates in the United States.

  • Teen Found Safe in Alaska: Court Documents Reveal Doomsday Beliefs Behind His Disappearance
Blaze Thibaudeau, the Arizona teenager who recently sparked an international search, has been found safe in Alaska. While Blaze is now out of harm's way, shocking details from court documents shed light on the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and reveal a troubling connection to the Lori Vallow case.

Prosecutors are pushing for the extradition of Blaze's mother, Spring Thibaudeau, and her brother, Brook Hale, to Arizona to face charges related to custodial interference. These developments come after U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents located the group near the Alaska/Canada border.

Blaze's story begins with an early departure from Phoenix Sky Harbor last Monday, accompanied by his mother, older sister Abi, and his uncle, Brook Hale. Court documents indicate that Brook was the leader of the group and shared doomsday beliefs similar to those held by Lori Vallow, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her children, driven by her belief in a Biblical apocalypse.

According to records, Spring Thibaudeau believes Blaze to be a "Davidic messenger," someone destined to play a significant role in the second coming of Jesus Christ. Brook Hale left behind notes for his family, including a list of "Questions for the Lord," which included the query, "Am I one of the witnesses who preaches with Blaze?" Another letter resembled a will, where he distributed his money and belongings based on a dream suggesting the end of the world was imminent.

Blaze's father, Ben, took legal action by filing for a marriage dissolution on October 17, a move prompted by the realization that his son had been taken "against his will." In response, a judge granted him emergency sole custody.

One crucial aspect highlighted in the court documents is that Blaze does not share his mother's end-of-the-world beliefs. Instead, he is said to believe that Spring suffers from a mental illness.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Spring Thibaudeau has a family court date scheduled for Wednesday, adding another layer of complexity to this deeply troubling and bizarre case. The extradition of Spring and Brook back to Arizona will be a significant step in addressing the charges they now face.

Blaze's safe return brings relief to his family, but the case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of recognizing and addressing concerning beliefs and behaviors, particularly when they involve the welfare of children.
