  • A Family That Tried Everything: Therapist Shavaun Scott on the Reiners, Schizophrenia, and Why the System Keeps Failing

Nick Reiner is charged with murdering his parents Rob and Michele Reiner. But this tragedy didn’t begin on December 14th. For seventeen years, a family that loved their son desperately tried everything to save him — and a system failed them at every turn.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Hidden Killers for an in-depth examination of the Nick Reiner case. This is not a story about bad parenting. This is a story about a family that did everything they could and a mental health system that offered no real answers.

Rob and Michele Reiner paid for eighteen treatment programs. They kept Nick close. They never gave up on him. Rob himself said they listened to professionals with diplomas on the wall when they should have been listening to their son. That’s not a failure of love — that’s a failure of a system that was supposed to help.

Shavaun breaks down what families face when someone they love is suffering from severe mental illness. The impossible choices. The heartbreak. The desperation that drives parents to try anything. She explains what schizophrenia actually does to the brain, why it so often gets missed when addiction is present, and what happens when medication transitions go wrong. Sources say Nick became “erratic and dangerous” after a medication change weeks before the killings. Shavaun helps us understand what the family was really dealing with.

We also examine why intervention is so hard. Sources say conservatorship proceedings were underway when Rob and Michele died. Shavaun explains the legal barriers families face, why protecting yourself from someone you love is nearly impossible under current law, and what needs to change so other families don’t end up in the same nightmare.

This case has resonated with millions of people because it’s not unique. Families across this country are dealing with this every single day. If anything good can come from this tragedy, maybe it’s that we finally have the conversation we’ve been avoiding.

  • "How Did You Find Out?" — FBI Expert Robin Dreeke on What the Beallis Investigation Signals

Hidden Killers Podcast continues its coverage of the Charity Beallis case with former FBI special agent Robin Dreeke, who analyzes what law enforcement's documented actions tell us about this investigation.

It's been over a month. Three people dead from gunshot wounds. No arrest. No named suspect. No official cause of death. But the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office has executed twelve search warrants, brought in federal agencies including the Secret Service and Homeland Security, and processed what they call a "voluminous" number of tips. They've also made a statement worth examining: there's no ongoing threat to the public.

Robin Dreeke knows what that language often signals. He spent 32 years in federal law enforcement.

Then there's the dumpster discovery. Three days after the deaths, someone reportedly found a trash bag containing family photos, children's artwork, and a necklace with the twins' names on it. The location was reportedly tied to an address associated with Randall Beallis. When Charity's son John reportedly raised this with a detective, the response was: "How did you find out?"

What does that exchange suggest? What does the federal involvement indicate? What might the autopsy delay mean?

Robin Dreeke breaks down investigative behavior — because sometimes what investigators do tells you more than what they say. This analysis does not presume any individual's guilt or innocence.

Content on this site is based on publicly available information and reflects commentary and opinion. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Nothing published here constitutes legal, medical, or professional advice.

  • The Money Stopped: Alan Jackson Withdraws, Nick Reiner Now Has a Public Defender He Met for 30 Seconds

Three weeks ago, Nick Reiner had the best criminal defense money could buy. Alan Jackson — the attorney who got Karen Read acquitted, who represented Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey — was building what looked like an insanity defense backed by a two-hundred-million-dollar estate.

Today, Jackson told a Los Angeles judge he had "no choice" but to withdraw. Nick Reiner now has a public defender named Kimberly Greene. She was informed last night. She had thirty seconds to speak with her new client before the hearing.

Sources tell Deadline that money is the likely reason. The deep pockets apparently dried up.

This is significant. For seventeen years, Rob and Michele Reiner's money was the solution to every crisis Nick created. Eighteen rehab programs. Seventy thousand a month in treatment facilities. A guest house on the family estate. And when he was arrested for allegedly stabbing them to death, sources said the estate was funding his elite defense.

That pattern appears to have finally broken.

Jackson held a press conference outside the courthouse. He said Nick is "not guilty of murder" under California law. He said his team had investigated the case "top to bottom, back to front." He said he remains "deeply committed" to Nick's best interests. But he's not the one arguing the case anymore.

DA Nathan Hochman responded: "We are fully confident that a jury will convict Nick Reiner beyond a reasonable doubt of the brutal murders of his parents."

Nick's arraignment is now February 23rd. No plea entered. No bail. And for the first time in his life, he's facing consequences without someone writing a check to soften the blow.

  • Uvalde Trial: Stephanie Hale Takes The Stand — After Testimony, The Judge Tells The Jury to Disregard Her Testimony!

Stephanie Hale, a teacher at Robb Elementary, testified today in the Adrian Gonzales trial. Gonzales is charged with 29 felony counts of child endangerment for his response to the 2022 Robb Elementary shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead.

Gonzales was the first officer on scene. Prosecutors say he knew the shooter’s location and failed to act. The defense argues he responded to a chaotic situation and did what he could. The trial continues in Corpus Christi.

  • "I Never Thought He'd Actually Do It": Why the Reiners Didn't See the Danger | Shavaun Scott

Sources say the Reiner family had been scared of Nick for years. That he had violent outbursts. That Michele told a friend, "I don't know what else we can do." That his behavior was aggressive enough to require private yoga sessions as a child because he was too disruptive for groups.

They knew something was wrong. They sensed danger. And they stayed.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Hidden Killers to examine the psychology of families who live with fear but don't take protective action. She explains what happens cognitively when people minimize danger from someone they love — the denial, the hope, the belief that "he would never actually do it."

This episode isn't about mental illness in the abstract. It's about violence risk specifically. How do clinicians assess whether someone is dangerous? What factors indicate escalation? What should have happened at Conan O'Brien's party when Nick's behavior was alarming enough that someone considered calling 911?

Shavaun also explains the tension in how we talk about mental illness and violence. Most people with schizophrenia are not violent. But some are. How do we hold both truths — destigmatizing mental illness while acknowledging that certain presentations carry real risk?

A law enforcement source says conservatorship proceedings were in the works when Rob and Michele were killed. Too late. Shavaun helps us understand what typically has to happen for a family to pursue that level of intervention — and why it so often comes right before tragedy instead of in time to prevent it.

  • Sheriff Mickey Stines Case FROZEN: Defense Wants Judge Removed After Hidden Video Surfaces

A video that nobody knew existed has thrown the Mickey Stines murder case into chaos. According to a defense motion filed December 29th, Special Judge Christopher Cohron was captured on video sitting next to Judge Kevin Mullins — the man Stines is accused of killing — at a mental health commission meeting just one week before the shooting. Mullins' widow was reportedly in the room. Cohron allegedly never disclosed any of this to the parties.

Now the defense is demanding Cohron recuse himself, arguing his impartiality cannot be trusted in a case where mental health is literally the entire defense. Stines' attorneys have already watched Cohron deny their motion to unseal the psychiatric evaluation and block them from using it at the bond hearing. They're connecting those rulings to the video — and asking whether a reasonable observer could see this as anything other than bias.

The December 18th hearing was supposed to address bond and venue. It lasted minutes. Cohron said there was an "issue" and adjourned. Eleven days later, we found out the issue was him.

Stines remains in jail — over fifteen months now — with no bond, no trial date, and no official motive. The prosecution still hasn't said whether they're seeking death. And now everything waits on one question: Does Cohron step aside, or does this fight go to the Chief Justice?

We break down the recusal motion, the legal standard, and what's likely to happen next in a case that can't seem to get out of its own way.

  • The Wrong Treatment: How Nick Reiner's Schizophrenia Was Missed for Years | Shavaun Scott

Nick Reiner started using drugs at fifteen. By sixteen, he was in his first rehab. By twenty-two, he'd been through eighteen treatment programs. The focus was always addiction. Heroin. Meth. Cocaine. The revolving door of substance abuse treatment.

But according to reports, Nick had schizophrenia. A serious psychotic disorder that was reportedly diagnosed years before the killings — but after years of being treated for the wrong thing.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins us to examine what may have been a catastrophic misdiagnosis. She explains what schizophrenia actually is and how it differs from addiction. She describes how serious mental illness can hide behind substance abuse — and how the addiction often is the self-medication, the person's attempt to manage symptoms they don't understand.

What happens when you put someone with an undiagnosed psychotic disorder through addiction treatment? What are those programs doing to them — or failing to do for them? And why does the treatment industry keep cycling patients through without catching what's actually wrong?

We also examine the medication change that reportedly occurred three to four weeks before the killings. Shavaun explains what happens during psychiatric medication transitions, why they're dangerous, and what destabilization looks like in someone with schizophrenia. Sources say Nick was "out of his head" after the switch. This is the clinical explanation of what that means.

  • Uvalde Trial: Mistrial Denied — But Judge May Still Strike Key Witness Testimony

Judge Sid Harle denied the defense's mistrial motion Wednesday in the Adrian Gonzales trial, but the battle over teacher Stephanie Hale's testimony isn't over. Harle called the prosecution's failure to disclose information "negligent" and will decide Thursday whether to strike Hale's entire testimony from the record.

Hale testified Tuesday that she saw "a person in all black and a long weapon" on the south side of the Robb Elementary campus — the same area where Gonzales was positioned. The defense says that information was never disclosed and called the trial "a trial by ambush." On Tuesday, the Uvalde County DA was even sworn in to testify about what she knew and when she knew it. Her answer: she was "in and out" of witness interviews.

The families aren't hiding their frustration. Jesse Rizo, uncle of victim Jackie Cazares, said watching the prosecution stumble is "so disappointing." His brother Manuel called the prosecution team "incompetent."

Trial resumes Thursday. Gonzales faces 29 counts of child endangerment.

  • Did Fairfax County Police Bury Evidence in the Brendan Banfield Case? | Au Pair Murder Defense

When your own forensics expert contradicts your murder theory, what do you do? According to court testimony in the Brendan Banfield case, Fairfax County Police transferred him out of the unit.

Brendan Banfield stands accused of orchestrating the February 2023 murders of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan with the help of the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes. Prosecutors claim Banfield created a fake FetLife profile in his wife's name to lure Ryan to their Herndon home as part of an elaborate murder plot. The motive? An alleged affair with the au pair.

But the prosecution's catfishing theory has a major problem. Officer Brendan Miller, who extracted data from 60 devices in the investigation, concluded in his executive summary that Christine Banfield appeared to be the one controlling the FetLife account — not her husband. He found no indication she lost control of her devices and noted she was communicating with multiple people on the site, not just Ryan. His work was peer-reviewed by the University of Alabama and confirmed.

Deputy Chief Patrick Brusch reportedly told Miller he would never work another digital forensics case in the major crimes bureau. Miller was transferred. The lead detective who also disagreed with command staff's theory was moved too. Judge Penney Azcarate called Miller's transfer concerning enough to order prosecutors to hand over all related communications.

Now the case hinges on Juliana Peres Magalhaes — who took a plea deal offering time served after changing her story. She wrote to her mother from jail that she was heartbroken to be "doing this to Brendan" but needed to come home.

This is the defense side of the Brendan Banfield case — and it raises serious questions about how this investigation was handled.

  • Inside the Reiner Family System: How 17 Years of "Help" Created a Killer | Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott

What does it look like when a family loves someone to death — literally?

Rob and Michele Reiner spent nearly two decades trying to save their son Nick from addiction and mental illness. They had every resource imaginable. Two hundred million dollars. Access to the best treatment programs in the country. A willingness to do anything, pay anything, sacrifice anything. They restructured their entire lives around Nick's chaos.

And on December 14th, 2025, they were allegedly stabbed to death by the son they couldn't stop saving.

In this episode, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines the Reiner family system from a clinical perspective. What happens when one child's dysfunction becomes the center of gravity for an entire family? How do parents get trapped in patterns of enabling that they can't recognize or escape? What's the psychological experience of being Jake, Romy, or Tracy — the siblings who watched their parents pour everything into Nick while they learned to manage on their own?

Shavaun breaks down the difference between support and enabling, the psychology of codependency, and why well-meaning parents often make problems worse. She examines Michele's reported statement to a friend — "I don't know what else we can do" — and explains what's happening when someone feels helpless but keeps repeating the same behaviors.

This is the story of a family that couldn't set boundaries. And the price they paid for that failure.
