In this episode, Shai speaks with Danielle Schwartz, an Israeli filmmaker, writer, and interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of cinema, research, and dialogical practice. She engages with memory, language, and contested histories.
Together they explore her award-winning documentary "Mirror Image" (2013), which captures an intimate conversation with her grandparents about a mirror taken from the Palestinian village of Zarnuqa in 1948. They discuss how history is negotiated in private spaces, why words like "Nakba" or "plundered" carry such weight, and how art and dialogue can hold contradictions without resolving them.
Danielle describes her approach as "a very Israeli film" – not about speaking the Palestinian story, but showing how difficult it is for Israelis to talk about 1948. Her current project "Witnessing '48" develops performative and dialogical formats for collective engagement.
