  • My Favourite Tip: Job Van Der Voort on why it's not enough for organisations to be remote-friendly

***Complete the 2021 How I Work Listener survey to go into the draw for a $100 Visa gift card and a spot in Inventium's Workday Reinvention program, valued at over $500: https://bit.ly/3fEMiAG. ***

Now everyone has had time working from home, is it time to return to ‘normal’?

Remote.com’s Founder and CEO Job van der Voort says now we've tasted the freedom of remote work, companies are going to have a tough time getting staff back in the office.

Working for a remote-first company allows staff to live anywhere and have more control over working hours. For companies, it means being able to hire the best talent for the role, no matter where they live.

But a remote-friendly culture means you don't have this luxury.

Job thinks it’s time to make the decision: To be all-in, or all out.

You can connect with Job on Twitter and Linkedin and the Remote website - remote.com

  • Mastering the business of cooking with chef Gary Mehigan

***Complete the 2021 How I Work Listener survey to go into the draw for a $100 Visa gift card and a spot in Inventium's Workday Reinvention program, valued at over $500: https://bit.ly/3fEMiAG. ***

When Gary Mehigan opened his first restaurant he couldn’t understand why all that effort in the kitchen wasn’t cooking up good business.

So the chef engaged a business coach who helped him work smarter instead of harder.

He learned how to be more accountable to his business, including a daily reflection strategy to keep him on track.

And those lessons in entrepreneurship held him in good stead after the very public and abrupt ending to his role on Masterchef - when he drew upon the resilience that running a business had taught him.

He also shares his hacks for quick and delicious home cooking, how fresh ingredients cut down your work in the kitchen, and why you shouldn’t be afraid of a pressure cooker.

Gary recommends Stephanie Alexander - Cooks Companion for new cooks as well as cookbooks by Maggie Beer or Neil Perry.

Gary’s favourite books on business management : Michael E Gerber, The E Myth and Awakening the Entrepreneur Within.

  • My Favourite Tip: Perry Marshall on how to do more $10,000 per hour tasks and less $10 per hour tasks

Have you ever thought about breaking down your day into what are the most valuable tasks that you do and the least valuable? If you're like most people, you've probably broken down your annual salary into an hourly rate. Or if you're a business owner or freelancer, perhaps you've divided annual revenue into the number of hours that you work to get to a similar calculation.

Perry Marshall, one of the most expensive business strategists in the world, has spent a lot of time thinking about this. Because for him, there is a completely different way of looking at this equation.

  • Two strategies to get rid of the "shoulds" in your life

“Should” is one of the most problematic words when it comes to self-talk. I should go to the gym. I should accept this event invitation. I should call this friend and see how she's going, I should spend less time on social media.

Shoulds are very, very unhelpful. They have the double whammy of making us feel guilty AND they don’t actually help us change our behaviour.

So today I want to share with you two alternative words or phrases to replace the shoulds in your life.

  • Why NYT journalist Kara Swisher has never had imposter syndrome

Kara Swisher is a no-nonsense journalist with a reputation as both the most feared and the most respected journalist to cover Silicon Valley.

When she interviews the biggest names in tech, including Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla’s Elon Musk, they’re usually visually nervous and on their toes. She's been covering the industry since the early 90s and knew many giants in the tech world when they were just starting up.

Kara is widely connected, well-read and always prepared for an interview. She knows just how to get what she wants out of her guests, and has never suffered from imposter syndrome.

She’s an opinion writer for the New York Times, podcast host of Sway and Pivot, and an editor-at-large for New York Media.

  • It’s time to challenge your rituals and routines

Are your routines still serving you? Maybe they were when you first made them, but are you still getting the same results as when you started?

I’ve recently been revising my own rituals and routines in my day, week, and month. I’ve discovered that by mixing up some of my routines, such as my workout and weekly psychologist appointment, I’ve been more energised and productive.

So I’m challenging you to take a look at your own routines and ask yourself if there’s a better way to achieve the outcomes you’re striving for.

  • Research shows that time management equals happiness

Can you become happier in your job simply by managing your time better?

At Inventium, our Workday Reinvention Program is one of our most popular programs with clients. The program increases productivity by teaching people to prioritise deep work over shallow work. This can lead to 20% more productivity and a huge increase in job satisfaction.

A recent study published in PLOS One looked at the outcomes of better time management. I was surprised to find out that time management was also linked to reduced feelings of distress and better well-being overall.

So time management and productivity can do more than just improve your work performance; it can also give you better quality of life.
