Dear FoundHer...

How this Female Founder Decided to Go Out on Her Own, with Sasha Adler, Founder, Sasha Adler Design

Listen Later

Sasha Adler has a true love of design and fashion. Initially this passion took her to New York where she worked as the editor of a fashion magazine, traveling back and forth to Paris throughout the year. While this part of her career was helping Sasha work toward her early dream of working at Vogue magazine, things changed when she met and scored an amazing opportunity to work with Nate Berkus, the acclaimed interior designer.  Drawing heavily on her unique editorial fashion experiences, Sasha was able to create interiors that incorporated textiles, fine art and antiques. After 14 amazing years in Nate’s business, Sasha thoughtfully navigated the tricky decision to to go out on her own and started her entrepreneurial journey at the helm of Sasha Adler Design in Chicago.

Sasha’s young firm specializes in historical restoration and ground-up construction projects. They collaborate with their clients to form a design narrative that balances natural materials, architectural details, and bespoke designs. Their clientele expands around the globe, and their work has been featured in Elle Decor, the Wall Street Journal, and Architectural Digest. With so much success in just over three years, Sasha has gracefully tackled the challenges that come with a growing business.

As a female entrepreneur, Sasha shares her advice on how to leave a job without burning any bridges, the most important consideration when hiring employees, and the best people to take advice from about starting your own business.

Quotes

• “I’m probably the only 10-year-old who asked for new bedding for their birthday.” (6:13-6:17 | Sasha)

• “I love interior design. It has all the elements of everything that I love. It has that fashion element in a sense that you’re pulling different textiles and pieces together. But it feels more permanent than fashion because it’s your home.” (9:18-9:31 | Sasha)

• “I think I was very naive and that was a blessing. The business of building a business was way more time consuming than I had ever envisioned.” (15:37-15:48 | Sasha)

• “I say to my team all the time, we’re not saving lives. We’re just not! You really should love what you’re doing and it should be fun at the end of the day. (23:32-23:41 | Sasha)

• “It’s so exciting to me that something that I saw and, kind of, made up now can actually be made.” (32:25-32:32 | Sasha)
