Today we're talking about giving yourself grace… that space you sometimes need to mess up and not beat yourself up over it or have days when you just don't have as much energy to do all the things you want to do…
Lindsay talks about being an entrepreneur by nature and pushing herself and holding herself to high standards, like many of us.
But what she's realized lately is often times her expectations were unrealistic- which she would have told you is a great thing- set super high goals because otherwise there is no way to achieve them. But what she's realized is… she's able to enjoy the journey more and embrace the beauty of evolving and use mistakes as learning opportunities… all the positive things that come when you give yourself grace.
Lindsay is now focusing on giving her best, based on my capacity that day and in that moment. Perfection is not the goal and she's not competing with anyone else. By giving herself this sort of self-compassion, it's not making her weaker, it's making her stronger because she's showing more love to herself. Slowing down just enough to enjoy the journey and have the space for rest and self-love and GRACE.
Here are some key points Lindsay talks about:
-Asking her kids… did you do your best today? Then you did a great job.
Leave it all on the field - you either won or you tried your best and it just didn't work. Either one of those options are acceptable. Why aren't we doing the same thing for ourselves?
-You need that physical and mental space to do it.
-Know you're not perfect and don't aim to be.
-Mess up and don't feel badly - it's a lesson learned.
-Some days you don't have as much energy or you don't feel well - your best is going to be different on different days.
-When you set your expectations too high- then you often don't reach them- then you stop believing yourself when you tell yourself you are going to do something.
This is where Lindsay got herself stuck!! She talks about how she stopped believing she could achieve her goals because they weren't realistic.
-When we give ourselves grace, we release feelings of shame and regret so we can move forward with care and openness towards ourselves and others.
-The feeling of never doing enough or being enough.
-In the moments when you're being hard on yourself or talking negatively to yourself, ask, "Is this how I would treat my friend or a loved one?" If not, then that's an indicator that it's time to change your self-talk!
-Burnout is the physical or mental collapse due to over work or stress. We have so many responsibilities and we are expected to be great at them all!!
-Realize- are we putting these expectations on ourselves or are other people putting them on us? Are we putting super high expectations of others?
-It can make you feel like you're never doing enough or being enough.
-The goal is not perfection, its PROGRESS.
-Tony Robbins says the secret to happiness in one word is PROGRESS.
"If you want to have ongoing joy and fulfillment in your life, the secret is just one word – progress. Progress equals happiness. While achievements and material things may excite you for the moment, the only thing that's going to make you happy long-term is knowing that you're making progress.
To do this, you have to remember: While change is automatic – progress is not. Progress results from actively and consciously choosing to create a life you love; a life where you can't wait to jump out of bed in the morning because you are growing, contributing, impacting and serving.
How do you start creating a life like that? By first learning that you don't need an excuse to feel good – you can feel good for no reason."
-Lindsay says, "I sometimes look around and I'm like oh my gosh I worked on the house all day - and there is still shit all over… HOW DO OTHER WOMEN DO IT?"
And that's just it… we can't be amazing at everything at the same moment.
-Realize that even though we want to have our house in order and laundry done- there is this balance that is HARD when raising kids… sometimes you have to LET UP and know that things will get back in order.
-Do you want to look back when you're 90 and think… my house was sure clean??
-The FREEDOM TO RELAX!! And know… you were there for the JOYS and the tears and the moments sitting around the table instead of constantly cleaning up or tasking.
-Being able to say say NO. No period. Without explanation. Signing up for room mom when you know it will stretch you thin. When you over commit at the school… know if it's YOU… does it make you so happy or does it suck the life out of you?
-Don't feel like you have to do it to be a good mom. Give yourself grace. Just because you aren't this mom or that mom or the room mom… they will get you a lot better at other things… because you are whole and happy and not trying to pour from an empty cup.
-Guess what - you don't want your family to get what's left of you!! You want them to get the best of you! That's why you can't commit to ALL THE THINGS… just leave things on your plate that you really WANT.
-You just have to give yourself grace. As a wife or husband too… it's so easy with so many responsibilities to feel like we are failing at it all. And feeling like you don't have energy to give to your spouse.
I've found this - when you just kick back and have conversations… what do you need, what do you need more of and LESS of?
-Take away the ego, and not trying to always wear ALL the hats at one time… Lindsay talks about how you can really GROW as a couple because you are taking your guard down and giving each other grace. It's not always 50/50… sometimes one of you is going to be going through something… but that's where you as a team comes in… and when you need it - when you're the 10%… your partner will be there with the 90%.
-This can give you so much stress and anxiety when you put so much pressure on yourself and you don't give yourself grace.
-And if you work, or have a family, or both… it can all be so much. Saying YES to meetings and all the requests for your time.
-And knowing you can politely say no. Without excuse or over talking it - don't give the maybe- give the hard no. That's how you sign yourself up willingly for burn out.
-Lindsay did a podcast - if it's not a HELL YES- it's a no! Perfect lesson here!
-How about making time for friends?
-A part of giving yourself grace is … saying GOOD JOB, you did great at that. We tend to skim over what we did great at and focus on what we failed at.
-There is so much power in slowing down, taking a step back and realizing how freeing it is to give yourself GRACE.
CHEERS! To giving yourself eternal grace!
Today on the podcast, Lindsay's incredible friend Amanda joins her to talk about her experience and journey to freeze her eggs. This is a great episode about this topic that we think should be talked about more than it is. Thankfully due to modern medicine there are so many ways for women to improve their odds for having children, now or in the future. I'm so proud of Amanda for doing this and for sharing it all with us! Amanda has been one of Lindsay's closest friends for the last 25 years! They went to high school together and moved to college together and were roommates in the dorms… Amanda and Lindsay have been through so much together.. this is going to be a very cool next chapter. Lindsay is so proud of Amanda for going through this process and for sharing the journey with us. On today's show, Lindsay asks Amanda these questions: -What is egg freezing and how is it different than IVF? -Why did you decide to go this route? -What type of medication did you have to take? -What is the lead up process going to it and appointments? -What is the cost? Why is there a range? -Where are they stored? -Do you have to do IVF first to maximize #s? -What is the process like? It is painful? What is egg retrieval day like? -What type of help did you need after and picking up meds? -What was the recovery like? -What is the most surprising thing you learned in this process? -Was it emotional for you? -How does the vaccine play into it? Such a refreshing conversation about this topic and one that is empowering and interesting.
When you are having a day or a moment when you just need POSITIVITY- Lindsay has a FULL ON PLAN for you! Maybe you're just in a funky headspace and being negative or stuck on something that happened that you want to let go but are having a hard time with it, or you are in an argument with someone close to you, or you're stuck in a complaining loop, or you just got yourself into a mood where you hate everyyyoneeee… we've all had moments or days like allll of these and it can be H-A-R-D to get your way out of it! Today, Lindsay is sharing 3 hacks for getting the hell out of the negative hole you are sitting in and get into a positive state of mind. And not in a fake, cheesy way. Like genuinely happy and feeling like you are on track and enjoying your days and being the person that you want to be. Lindsay says… "If I know ANYTHING- I know for sure that the thoughts you think and the words you say create the world that you live in. So it's worth fighting like HELL to get in a happy headspace and stay there." Lindsay is sharing a few hacks and I know at least one will work for you! Even if you don't have a positive support system or that one go-to positive person that can help lift you out. That's ok! You can do this on your own! It's so important to be positive because its how you SEE and REACT to the world! It's how you label things and interpret things! A few topics Lindsay discusses: --Music as your mantra --Find your most positive person in your crew --OR get it virtually! Find people that inspire you- and listen to them like they are your friends! **especially important to interrupt your thinking when you are off! -And STOP the things that make you feel like hell! -Don't let yourself go down a spiral! -Sometimes - we need a down day!! Remove yourself from the world and get re-centered. -TUNE OUT the negativity if it is someone else!! Tell them or don't! -SUBMERGE YOURSELF in all the positives -Get in as many 10s as you can -SAY NO to anything that sounds awful - remove it all - we are rebooting here - we aren't saying YES to be nice. -We have to be nice to ourselves first. We can't pour from an empty cup!!! CHEERS to living in your happiest headspace!
Today we are talking about removing the feelings of guilt and shame when it comes to food. We live in a diet culture - with a new fad or restrictive diet or skinny tea every time we turn around. We see messages about getting your body back after baby and pictures of super airbrushed bodies in our feed all day. Of course we're going to compare ourselves and feel less than. If you listen to the podcast on the regular you know Lindsay talks a lot about picturing yourself at 90 years old and looking back on what was important. Do you think there's any chance you'll think to yourself… "god I'm just so glad I spent my whole life obsessing about food and my body?" No way! Another thing Lindsay talks about all the time is bandwidth. We only have so much bandwidth in a day. And any minutes you spend regretting what you ate or talking negatively about your body, are minutes you aren't spending doing things you love. Today our conversation is going to be based around the concept of intuitive eating and listening to your body. No diets, no negative talk, just a really healthy way to approach food and our bodies. Things that work for Lindsay: -Intermittent fasting. -Find balance between foods that taste good, foods we enjoy and foods that make you feel good and give you energy. -Never deprive myself. -Make a conscious choice about what it is and be decisive about it - don't over think it or second guess it. Decide, enjoy and don't negative talk or think during or after. TIPS from experts: --Nutritionalists and eating counselors --Intuitive eating - listen to your body. Allowing yourself to eat the chocolate that you want to. -It sounds so simple - but I can't believe I didn't realize this sooner. Here's my tip ready- eat when you are hungry. Listen to your body. -A baby cries when it's hungry - we loose that along the way because of "diet culture" -Listen and trust yourself -Skinny tea culture - which is really a laxative -What happens after you eat something? Write it down! -Put aside weight loss for a minute - diets generally don't work - or you gain the weight back. Remove the intentional weight loss for a minute and think about it with the intention of improving our relationship with food and our body image. -Listen to your bodies cues in a loving way - not in a harsh way - like I cant eat that because I didn't work out today. -It's not worth sacrificing your mental health to be thin!! -What can you get out of intuitive eating? Physical and mental - dieting is so hard on our body. You yo yo and your weight is changing and working out even if you are sick - it's just not good for you. Emotionally - its a mess. Dieting can start out nice because there is a plan and structure - and as humans we like that. Then it ends up chaos, we break it, we stop trusting ourselves. You can feel like you are losing your mind and lead to negative self talk. -Once we start working with our bodies, we usually hit a stable weight that our bodies are happy at and we have more energy (we are eating the calories we need) and we are happier because we have more BANDWIDTH and headspace for other things because you aren't obsessing about eating and dieting and then feeling bad about it after. It's a lot of mental energy. -If you have this food fixation - you are taking up a lot of your brain power - and you can handle more in your day and in your brain. If you are over burdened in your cognitive world - maybe it's time to listen to your body and work with it, not against. -How do we start? To connect with our bodies again? We are so hard on moms and our bodies. It's insane when you think about it - we made a human. Then we tell the moms they need to bounce back and get your body back and get a "mommy makeover." -A lot of women say their eating habits came from their parents -Unfollow someone on social media if they make you feel crappy -Work on your self talk- when you feel those negative thoughts - be aware of them first. Don't go down the spiral! "I look like I have a muffin top in these jeans" then think about that cake you had 2 weeks ago. Stop yourself - we are actual humans with emotions and complicated lives. You a -Emotional eating - ask yourself - are you hungry? If no, ask yourself what is going on. If you are hungry, go eat. You won't always have the answer. THEN- ask yourself - what is it that I really need right now? A hug, fresh air, to be alone, to have a big bowl of ice cream. Maybe that's what you needed -It's how we buffer sometimes… sometimes it's ok. When you think it will make you feel better, not worse. -Our eating behaviors and patterns has been there since childhood. Our relationship to food is built in childhood. Now we are living it. I don't want to give my kids things they will need to undo. -How to be awesome at shifting your relationship with food for your kids. We teach kids that they have to clear their plate - isn't really healthy messaging. And we sometimes use food as a reward or something that has to be earned. This could be a whole podcast on it's own- Lindsay will do research and report back!! -pay attention to how you feel!! If you feel crappy after you eat pizza- have one slice with a salad because I feel better and have more energy after. --Same with exercise- you can't do it as a reward or a punishment! Find what is fun for you. -Get rid of anyone who's talking about your body or food negatively - sometimes there are pushers - want you to eat more or make a comment if you make another plate. It is your body- you get to choose. It's hard not to internalize those comments- just say "We aren't having this conversation" -If you let yourself have the foods you want - you're less likely to feel like you've gone crazy. -You might not even love some foods that you make forbidden - like you put it off limits then -RECLAIM your power! Don't let a relative When you stop resisting and start accepting - it all gets easier. -You can give certain foods power over you - if you resist it so hard. You have a choice about how you react to your thoughts and cravings -Don't label foods as good or bad - this sets you up for guilt -Studies show that some people can just brush off messages about body image easier than others. People who tend to be perfectionists are going to have a harder time if someone says something about their body or eating. -Eating disorder type behavior is serious - restricting, purging. -Talk to your own self about your body like you would your child or best friend. -Talk to a professional if you think that would be helpful. TIPS from social media comments: -Being consistent with exercise, fasting and diet -Cheat day on the weekend - healthy for 6 days -I plan for it. Impulse cravings leave me feeling guilty and disappointed in myself -We are different animals - I can eat whatever I want - I could use a dose of guilt -Workout the day of and the day after and keep the indulgence to just one meal/thing The older I get the less I care, life is short, enjoy! -"never skip two" have whatever you want at one meal but the next meal be back on track -mandatory hard workout before hand -balance! Enjoy in moderation and crush a good workout the next day or before. -Find food freedom is great! -Only splurge when it's something you love! Let's go out and LIVE and LOVE and EAT and be kind to our bodies and to ourselves!
We alll have our own thoughts about it all - masks, the vaccine, how elected officials have handled it, mandates, quarantines…
But when you think about it, of course we do. We all have our own set of experiences and views and it shapes what we think and the choices we make.
The crazy thing is… before the last 2 years, especially the last year, we all seemed to appreciate perspectives that were different than our own. We didn't think that people that didn't think like us were idiots, they just had a different set of views.
In this podcast, we are chatting about the importance of respecting other people's opinions about everything related to Covid, even though they might not align with ours.
It can be so tricky when people we are close to - friends or family think differently than us- how do you navigate it and maintain your relationship. Today we are unpacking the complications that Covid perspectives can have on our relationships and how to handle it in the best way possible.
Lindsay goes through these thoughts:
1. Listen to understand
2. Allow yourself to put yourself in their shoes and appreciate their perspective
3. Speak for yourself
4. Find common ground
5. Agree not to discuss it
6. Change the subject!
7. Discuss without judgment
8. Mental health should be as much of a concern as Covid itself
9. The words we speak out loud and the words we say in our head impact us SO MUCH. We have to protect our headspace and keep our stress low!
10. Understand we don't live in a dictatorship- we are allowed to think for ourselves. That's what our company is based on - FREEDOM! We don't all have to think the same thing or do the same thing. We are allowed to make our own decisions and have our own opinions.
Covid will continue to challenge us physically, emotionally and mentally in the months and likely years ahead. To preserve our relationships as well as our health and well-being, it's important to acknowledge the impact the virus has had on each of us.
Our goal here is to FIGHT LIKE HELL to stay in a good headspace and keep your stress low and your immune system STRONG! And when this phase is over, we still have our people right there with us!
Let's talk about being an awesome room parent! Supporting teachers and your school… and getting extra time with your child in the classroom or on field trips… being a room parent can be so much fun and a great way to be involved on campus.
If you're a room parent this year or are considering taking on the role in future years… this podcast is for you!!
Lindsay is sharing so many awesome tips for how to make this job not too complicated or stressing… how to do sign-ups and plan parties… how to work with the other room parents and my favorite really creative and next level ideas for times when you want to really make it extra special.
Here are some of the tips Lindsay talks about:
-Ask the teacher all the questions! What do they like and not like- how can you be most helpful?
-Ask your parents for feedback as you go so you know your audience! Sometimes you will have parents who want to be super involved, other times not… sometimes they would rather contribute items to a party and other times they want it easy and would rather Venmo you. Find out what works best for your group each year.
-Have teachers fill out really AWESOME teachers favorites forms! Make your own- there are NO good ones online! Make sure it covers things you could give them as a little surprise or for birthdays or holidays.
-Make sure you know about any kids allergies or photo restrictions.
-If you want to be NEXT level - set-up a What's App communication - like a group text- for your class. Send reminders like "Morning! Reminder it's pajama day today!" Parents find this SO helpful!
-Email tips - don't include too much information to where it's overwhelming - but also, wait to gather enough information so you aren't sending emails too often. Ask if anyone wants to be removed at the start! Many families just want one parent on the emails (my husband opts out of mine 😜)
-Use Sign Up Genius for volunteering and to have people sign up to bring items in!
-Figure out creative ways to appreciate teachers that are easy (and not annoying) to parents
-Plan parties ahead of time - use Pinterest! Ask what has worked the best in the past - and run ideas by teachers before sending to the class.
-Hardest part in my opinion- being on a committee. Make it easier by making it simple. Dividing tasks to avoid too much correspondence or differing opinions. If everyone has their own jobs and does it their own way- it makes it easy!
-Don't take on all the cost yourself!
-Get creative with teacher gifts and think about they would ACTUALLY want! They aren't JUST teachers - they don't want only things that say teacher etc- as tempting as it may be! Really use their favorites list!
-Gift baskets! Have people in the class contribute to birthday, holiday or end of school year baskets! Gift cards or items can really add up when everyone contributes. Know the schools rules with collecting money and items before you hit go!
-Plan ahead and get creative - don't make it too complicated to where it takes over your life but also take the time to do it more special than what's expected.
-The perks!! You get extra class time and often times priority to things like joining on field trips etc!
-Supporting teachers and school staff is the BEST!
-NEXT level idea- photo book with pictures from the year - make on Shutterfly and send links to all the parents to order their own!
-Also can have a Shutterfly photo page where teachers and parents can upload photos.
-It's personally rewarding, it's fun to do for your child and their peers and good to help your school community.
-Remember- don't make things too complicated… don't take things personally and have FUN with it!!
CHEERS to your most awesome room parent self!!
It's both the most painful thing ever at times and also the most rewarding. We are talking about waking up EARLY… well 5am to be exact.
Countless studies show that we are our sharpest and most productive in the first few hours of the day and there's also a lot of research supporting the thoughts that more sleep and waking up early leads to better health and an overall healthier lifestyle.
But here's the real reason. You get TWO full hours to yourself before the world is awake and moving! You likely aren't distracted by texts and emails coming in or toddlers tugging at your legs. It gives clarity and time to do things that are important to you each day. So while it will be painful at times- I think once you try it out and see how great your days feeeeel- you'll be addicted!
We are talking about why waking up at 5am is AWESOME today!
Here are some of the points Lindsay makes:
-It's about health and a healthy lifestyle… but honestly it's also about personal time!
-The master of this concept is Robin Sharma, author of The 5am Club Own Your Morning Elevate Your Life says…
"5am is time of least distraction, highest human glory and greatest peace."
-The average person wakes up and let's the day take over.
-Waking up at 5am allows you to have intention for your day.
-If you want to be great, this is where to start.
-We have to start our days with intention
-Lindsay always talks about bandwidth. Our minds have a limited amount of "bandwidth."
--Our brain is best early in the morning.
--Our brain chemistry is different early in the morning.
Here are some of the reasons Lindsay thinks waking up early will bring value to your life:
Studies Lindsay references:
Source: the journal JAMA Psychiatry
Waking up early reduces the risk of suffering from depression, says new study. A recent study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry showed that waking up an hour before the normal time can reduce the risk of a person suffering from depression by 23%.
The connection between earlier sleep timing and lower risk of depression may have to do with circadian rhythm and early risers getting more light exposure throughout their awake hours. "We know that exposure to sunlight has an impact on our moods," says psychotherapist Michele Miller, LCSW. "For example, looking at seasonal affective disorder, it's the longer, darker days that lead people to feel depressed and less energized—so, getting up earlier allows you to experience more daylight, which could make you feel more energized." And if you're doing that on the regular, it could lead to the decreased depression risk identified above.
So many studies about reduced sleep and weight gain in nurses. You are tired so you don't eat as healthy or are in a hurry. You don't have time for exercise and your body doesn't have enough time to rest.
Here are some of the tips Lindsay talks about:
Lindsay wraps up by talking about the lessons learned in the book, "The 5am Club."
-Waking up at 5am gives you alone time and improved brain state so you can operate at your best.
-Balance your "empires" - physical health, emotional health and spirituality.
-The 20/20/20 rule. This is how to spend your first hour! First 20 minutes fitness, next 20 minutes reflection and meditation and last 20 minutes learning/reading.
So many reasons to wake up at 5am and feel awesome!
How crazy is it to think that we wake up… brush our teeth, check social media and for a lot of us… start comparing ourselves and our lives to other people's. Social media has made it so easy- too easy- to compare what we have or don't have or what we are doing or aren't doing- to people we don't even know. Some days it may affect us more than other days… but the real trick here is to realize that today, we live in a comparison culture. And we have to make an actual effort to resist comparing ourselves to everyone else and have a plan for how we are going to manage these feelings when they come up. Concentrating on what other people are doing - and spending time questioning why they got there or how or being jealous or criticizing gets you nowhere. Instead, you can use that same energy to fire yourself up- and see what's possible. Today we are talking about the comparison culture that we are living in and how to manage it in a healthy way that motivates and inspires us, not makes us depressed! Here are a few things Lindsay talks about… -When you're 90 and looking back- you aren't going to think about comparing yourself to other people- instead you'll compare what you did and who you were to the best possible version of yourself. And the goal is for those to be pretty closely aligned. -We know this is the highlight reel of people's lives but we still let it get in our head. -Some people we know and other people we don't know. -Often times when we are younger, we consume all this content and let it get to us!! We spend lots of time on it. -But then…. You realize it's a HUGE waste of time. -It's all about bandwidth. We all only have so much bandwidth. If you go down a rabbit hole fighting with strangers on Twitter… that's using up your bandwidth. If you're sitting for hours on Instagram looking at what other people have and either allowing yourself to feel shitty as a result or hate on them or judge them… or decide what's not fair about your life or why they actually SUCK… -You can use it get FIRED UP about it. There's no positive benefit in underestimating someone. -It's motivating. Sometimes you have to go to work. If you see someone doing what you want to be doing.. or doing it faster or better… -You should be thankful there are people out there KILLING IT- it makes you want to run harder, push myself… it makes you want to work harder. -As long as someone isn't doing anything bad or hurting anyone…. Why hate on what they are doing -They are showing you that it's possible to do better than you are doing and that's GOOD. At the end of the day we are completing with one person- ourselves. The best version of ourselves. -FOMO- missing out on something better that you think you should have We end up comparing what we have to what we dont have This mindset makes you feel like whatever you are doing isn't enough. -Social media started as a way to keep up with people that you like… but now is often a way to come to look at people with a side eye!! -Maybe you're looking at how much money someone has or the vacations someone is going on or who they married… -Your happiness becomes a moving target. -Often times we are spending time on things we can't control. If you can't control it… let it go. It doesn't serve you. -Remember- on social media- you are only seeing the highlights reel. -We have to have an actual plan as we consume the content that people strategically put out. CHEERS- to only completing with yourself!!
