The word "professional" has long been co-opted to force people from all backgrounds to fit — or at least try to fit — into neat little boxes. The problem is that people don't naturally fit into those boundaries. Forcing them to conform or hide who they really are has proven to be a terrible approach to business. The solution is simple: employers need to allow people to be themselves for the sake of business and their employees.
