Farming has to be one of the most difficult careers if our (lack of) success at gardening is any indicator. By no means are we farmers, but from what we do know about growing food, it’s important to periodically let your fields lie fallow. This allows the soil a chance to rest and restore some nutrient balance. It’s counterintuitive, it certainly feels like taking time off from growing crops is going to hurt your bottom line but it’s incredibly necessary for the long-term health of the soil, as well as the success of the farmer. And we think the same is true when it comes to giving our money away. It sure doesn’t sound like a vital ingredient in a wealth-building formula, but we think that it actually is. And when we constantly talk about the different ways that we can work to have more money- whether that’s through spending less or earning more, we think it’s important to hit pause to encourage folks to do the opposite. We truly do believe that by giving away our money- even by starting out with small amounts, that we’re going to end up better off in the end. Listen as we discuss why we believe this to be true, who should be donating their money, how much we should be giving away, and some practical tips to help you to part with more of your money!

If you’ve listened to the show for more than a couple episodes then you know that we’re big fans of index funds. Specifically, low-cost widely diversified index funds are what the vast majority of our portfolios consist of. But how did index funds come to be? And sure, we’re all for them but what does everyone else say? That’s why we’re pumped to take a deep dive into index funds today with Robin Wigglesworth who is editor of Alphaville over at the Financial Times. Robin is a financial journalist and he’s also the author of the book “Trillions: How a Band of Wall Street Renegades Invented the Index Fund and Changed Finance Forever.” Passive investing is something we take for granted- for us, index funds have always been an option but that wasn’t always the case. It was a heretical idea in the past, so we’re excited to get into the history of one of the most important modern-day investing innovations: who was responsible for their creation, why hedge funds still exist if index funds are the path to wealth, potential downsides to passive investing, & much more!

Searing your steak as a way to ‘lock in the juices’ is something we’ve heard folks recommend for years! Get that grill hot as blazes, toss on your steak, and reap the juicy medium-rare rewards. But even though there might be a kernel of truth here, culinary scientists tell us that it’s not actually the best method. It turns out that the reverse sear is the better way to do it! Similarly, there are phrases and ideas in the personal finance space that get preached as though they’re the gospel truth. And there are a number of reasons why certain bits of advice stick with us- maybe it intuitively makes sense or perhaps it’s packaged well and is just flat-out catchy. We’re all looking for guidance and shortcuts but that doesn’t necessarily mean that these sayings are sage advice. So today we call out some of the biggest culprits on the show and share how you should be thinking about your money.

Back to the Future is easily one of the most quintessential 80s movies- come at us if you disagree! And there’s a scene early in the movie when Doc Brown basically explains how it is that he came up with the flux capacitor, which makes time travel possible. But the way that it came about was Doc was standing on his toilet, hanging a clock when he slipped and hit his head on the sink. It was at that precise moment that he came up with the flux capacitor- doing something completely unrelated to his quasi-scientific pursuits, which would forever alter his and Marty McFly’s life. It’s a moment from a classic movie that embodies the concept that you never know when inspiration is going to show up. Well in the same way that a stroke of genius came to Doc when he least expected it, we’ve found that there are so many different money lessons that we’ve both learned from working out and getting more fit! Luckily it didn’t take us hitting our head on the sink but here is a ton of crossover between physical fitness and personal finance. And we think regardless of how active you are (no gym membership required), there are some fantastic lessons to be learned from exercise that will lead to you becoming more financially fit.

Aside from buying a home, buying a car is one of the most expensive one-time purchases that we make. This is a part of the reason why we spend a decent amount of time talking about cars! Over 16% of American household budgets are spent on transportation, so get this one decision right and it’ll be a massive boost to your personal finances. And that’s why we’re excited to have Mike Quincy joining us today. Mike is a car specialist and has been with Consumer Reports for nearly 30 years! He participates in the hands-on car testing, appears regularly on Consumer Reports Talking Cars podcast, and knows virtually all someone could know about new and used cars. We discuss why Consumer Reports buys all their own cars, where the prices of used cars is going, finding the balance between a car that you love vs a practical vehicle that gets you around, some of the best used cars if you’re on a tight budget, and then the challenging future of electric vehicles.
