Some things sound really good... until they aren’t. Like when your kids say they’re going to spend all of their money at the candy store and how they’re going to eat ice cream every night of the week. Sure that sounds tempting now, but the reality isn’t quite as rosy. As you grow older you realize that there are constraints that prevent you from a diet like that- namely the health issues that would arise! We think that something similar is happening to the Financial Independence Retire Early movement. An idea that sounds really compelling when the market is kicking butt doesn’t feel the same once a bear market has ravaged those early retirement portfolios. Not to mention that with inflation on the rise, your dollars aren’t getting you quite as far as they used to! So we offer a few alternatives to those who are striving after early retirement, how we would recommend that you think about your work and career, and then we highlight why we think the FIRE movement still has its merits.

Happy Independence Day! We’re marking the occasion by talking with Sam Dogen- one of the pioneers of the Financial Independence Retire Early movement. Sam is the founder of Financial Samurai which he founded over 10 years ago. He retired at age 34 after a career at Goldman Sachs, but then came out of retirement as retired life was a bit too boring for him! He has written over 2,100 articles at his site and now his new book “Buy This, Not That” is about to be released very soon which is an excellent guide on how you can optimize your money to build wealth and live life on your own terms. During this episode we talk about why Sam isn’t a huge fan of the 25x rule, maximizing your earning potential, engineering a layoff- we’re excited to talk about all of that and more today!

Kate and Emily take the mic! It’s that time of year again- when our wives have yet again so graciously agreed to sit down and talk with us about money after we wrestle the kids down for naptime, while we’re away at the beach! Specifically during this episode we fielded some questions from the Facebook group and the ladies answered what their current splurges are, thoughts on moving our families to the burbs, ways to keep the grocery budget down, when we got financially naked, how to match different levels of risk tolerance, what it looks like to include kids in our family money conversions, and plenty of other nuggets of wisdom!

How does a company build for the quintessential duality of creating a product that is focused on unplugging from day-to-day life, and their customers connected? Whether it’s our new “work from anywhere” reality, or keeping a lifeline available in case of an emergency, a connection to key information and opportunity is often necessary for even the most die-hard campers and nature lovers. Enter Airstream, the iconic 91 year-old RV company that has to face its own mission of staying true to the past, while building for the future, and harnessing the power of connectivity to make it happen.
In this episode of The Restless Ones, we have the pleasure of sitting with Bob Wheeler, President and CEO of Airstream, who has led his company to embrace the notion that connecting with nature no longer means you need to completely disconnect. For a product that seemingly never changes on the outside, Bob and team are making hundreds of innovations on the inside. From electrifying the fleet to enabling connectivity that can allow users to control and monitor the vehicle, stay connected, and let the company harness the data they need to continue to push the company to the future – innovation is at the core of this iconic company.
