  • Managing Rental Properties Effectively #269

When either of us are talking with someone and the conversation shifts to the fact that we own rental properties, there’s always the assumption: “It must be a huge pain to deal with maintenance issues!” or “I bet you’ve had some nightmare tenants!”. But in reality that hasn’t at all been our experience even though there are horror stories and personal anecdotes out there. We want potential investors to know that there are steps you can take to ensure that you’ll have a positive experience investing in real estate and managing properties, while simultaneously making money every month and building wealth. We even discuss property managers and when hiring one could make sense. If you’ve thought that you’ll never own rental properties because they sound like too much work, then this episode is for you!

During this episode we enjoyed a POG Basement IPA by Scofflaw Brewing! • Avoiding the Trap of Planned Obsolescence #266

“They don’t make them like they used to!” Even though that’s something you might hear a parent or grandparent say, there is some truth to the phrase. Unfortunately, there are a lot of products out there that fail prematurely, and it causes us to spend more of our hard earned money. Planned obsolescence is a concept that we’ve heard as consumers, but what does it actually mean? And is all planned obsolescence a terrible thing? In this episode we cover many examples of it, including the notorious sector of consumer electronics. But then we also dive into how we can do our best to avoid spending more money, due to planned obsolescence.

  • Developing a Home Buying Strategy #263

How should you approach purchasing a home? With more millennials buying a home for the first time ever, there is a ton of room for mistakes. And there is a lot on the line as well- the average price of a new home now exceeds $300k, so there are a lot of things to consider in order to make a wise purchase! At the same time, mortgage interest rates are at all-time lows. That creates a feeling like you have to move quickly before those rates start to creep back up. But if you move too quickly, you could end up overpaying for that house or not considering the bigger financial impact. We’re going to answer some questions like ‘Does renting make more sense?’, ‘What’s the purpose of this house?’, and ‘What’s your timeline?’. This episode is all about what it looks like to have a solid home buying strategy in place, so that you make a smart buy.
