  • Is Bigger Really Better? w/Terry Betker

In today's show, Tracy and Terry discuss the controversial and often emotional subject of farm growth in an episode titled "Is Bigger Always Better?"

As the original entrepreneurs, farmers like to grow and develop their operations. It is what good farmers do, right? Nowadays, looking at our current farming landscape, we might ask if farmers have become obsessed with growth for the sake of growth? If so, how did we get to this point? Tracy and Terry explore these questions, plus they review some of the "hidden" costs, financial concerns, and important considerations that tend to get brushed aside, or completely forgotten, amongst the emotional excitement surrounding new opportunities to grow the farming operation.

Are you looking at growing your operation? Have you asked yourself why? Too often, growth is not questioned. Have you considered all angles, both good and bad, of the opportunity?

As a Farm Management Consultant, Terry has an extensive career dedicated to helping farmers make the right decisions for their farm business and family. We are excited to have him join us in this episode, where we explore the feather-ruffling topic of farm growth.

  • The Keys To Financial Success w/Terry Betker

In today's episode, Tracy speaks to Terry Betker from BackSwath Management about "The Keys to Financial Success."

So, what are the keys to financial success for farmers? Terry and Tracy both agree that financials are hands down the keys to financial success in farming operations. So why are they so important, you may ask?

Farm business financials capture financial performance regularly, and without that information, it's hard to get clarity on what your financial strengths and weaknesses are. More importantly, without that clarity and understanding, all decisions are made in a void of knowledge. These decisions can work out sometimes, however, they can often have very negative financial consequences on the farm.

Terry even goes on to state that financials are incredibly crucial for all businesses, and even more so, for farming operations. As important as they are, Terry shares that many farmers still do not have financials, and if they do have them, a good number of those farmers do not use the goldmine of data that can are found on those sheets of paper.

Join us as we explore the importance of financials, what the most important statements are, and how these documents can be used as the keys to financial success for your farming operation.

  • Setting Your Farm Up For Success w/Terry Betker

In today's show, we speak with Terry Betker from Backswath Management about "Setting Your Farm Up For Success." "By failing to prepare (plan), you are preparing (planning) to fail." Benjamin Franklin. This quote sets the stage for today's discussion. If you do not prepare and plan in your business, you are preparing to set your farm up for failure. Terry and his team at Backswath are management consultants, and they work with farmers across Canada to help them with; financial, transition, growth, conflict, and HR management services. Over his many years of working with farmers, Terry has noticed that the farms that take time to plan and run their farm like a business deliberately; these are the farms that do best. In this episode, Terry and Tracy dive into what exactly farm planning is and why it really is needed even if you are a small operation. Terry's underlying message is that it does not need to be complicated. Simply put, it is time spent intentionally working on the farm business and not in the business. In other words, stepping away from the day to day farming activities and taking the time to think about things differently. As you slow down, it is amazing how you begin to see your farming operation so differently. Would you like to build a strong business foundation for your farm? Join Terry and Tracy as they navigate through Terry's simple framework that he calls the Foundation For Farm Success. • A New Frontier For Grain Marketing w/Mike Witkowicz

In today's episode, we speak to Mike from the Ag Exchange Group about "A New Frontier For Grain Marketing."

As farmers, we focus a lot of time and money on producing better crops to increase our yields. Rightfully so, as better crops and increased yields, tend to lead to increased farm revenues. This is every farmer's end goal, isn't it? Mike joins us today to share his thoughts on how farmers can maximize their crop production revenues. He believes that we are entering a new frontier for grain marketing and that by focusing on the marketing of our production, we are entering into what he calls the blue ocean strategy. This is where their online grain marketplace, CXN360, comes in. Short for Commodity eXchange Network, CXN360 connects sellers with buyers. The goal of their platform is to give farmers more connections to buyers, which means more choice, more control, and ideally more revenue. Mike posed the question, "In an increasingly competitive marketplace, where farmers are incredibly busy, how do you efficiently and effectively reach new buyers?

Join us as Tracy and Mike chat about the history of grain marketing, how producers are currently marketing their production, and buckle your seat belts as we take a deep dive into what Mike believes is the new frontier for grain marketing.

  • The Farm CEO w/Kelly Dobson

In today's episode, Tracy speaks with Kelly Dobson, chief leadership officer of LeaderShift Inc, about "The Farm CEO" and the importance of farmers adapting an executive mindset when it comes to their farming operation.

Thinking of yourself as the CEO of your farm might seem like a foreign concept to many farmers, especially if you are a sole operator or a small farming operation. It might even seem more than a little bit exaggerated and over the top. In reality, it's a crucial mindset shift that can pay dividends towards your happiness and farm results.

To drive home the point, Tracy and Kelly take the conversation one step further and compare agriculture to the Business World. In every mainstream business, there is a leader with the title of CEO who is continuously improving themselves and their leadership abilities to increase business results. They do this for several reasons. First off, in order to keep their position as CEO they need to prove that they can continue to drive business results. In order to drive continuous improvement in their business, they realize that they need to constantly improve themselves as a leader. Farmers are avid learners, and for decades they have developed their operation with new varieties, better genetics, better machinery, more land, and so on. Adopting a CEO mindset very well might be the X-Factor that changes your farming operation.

In the interview, Kelly states that the research is clear. "Smart, technically savvy and hard-working" is now entry level for leadership ability. High-performing leaders are leading relationally. Average leadership works okay in average circumstances, but only high leader effectiveness will effectively address our current farming circumstances of increasing volatility, uncertainty, and complexity. These circumstances take an enormous toll on the physical and emotional health of the leader, as well as those around them.

Are you Looking to increase your farm's results? If so, we invite you to join Tracy and Kelly as they speak about becoming the CEO of your operation.
