Lennie Tristano war einer der ersten Jazz-Pädagogen. Der blinde Pianist experimentierte mit freier Improvisation und neuen Aufnahme-Techniken. Vor allem aber repräsentierte er die "Tristano-Schule": eine weiße, intellektuelle Variante des Cool Jazz.

Tristano wird als Sohn italienischer Einwanderer in Chicago geboren. Mit zehn erblindet, studiert er klassische Musik, beginnt parallel Jazz zu spielen – und zu unterrichten. Für seine selbsternannten „Jünger“ ist Tristano ihr „Meister“. Der spielt nicht nur cool, sondern auch Bebop. 1949 schreibt er Geschichte: „Intuition“, eine freie Improvisation, Vorwegnahme dessen, was Ornette Coleman zehn Jahre später kreieren wird. Seine Experimente sorgen für Aufhorchen und Kontroversen: Als er im Studio Tonspuren übereinanderlegt, den Klang verändert und die Band-Geschwindigkeit variiert, heißt es, er kreiere ein „künstliches Produkt“. Lennie Tristano fühlt sich unverstanden und zieht sich immer mehr zurück. Seine Schule löst er 1956 auf.
