   R.E.M. blieben erfolgreich. Die folgenden Alben in den 1990ern fanden zwar weiter Beachtung, an ihre hohen Verkaufszahlen konnte die Band aber nicht anknüpfen. Der gesundheitlich begründete Ausstieg des Schlagzeugers Bill Berry hielt die Band nur kurz auf. Kompromisslos lieferten R.E.M. auch zu dritt weitere Alben, spielten mit Stilrichtungen, aber nahmen doch langsam Abschied von der großen Bühne. Michael Stipe, der einst Kunstgeschichte studiert hatte, veröffentlichte Fotobände und produzierte Filme. Die Band verkündete schließlich ihr Ende im Jahr 2011, was ihr den Respekt vieler einbrachte für ihre souveräne und integre Entscheidung, die ganz dem Geist der Band R.E.M. entsprach.    Mit ihrem siebten Album „Out of Time“ beim Majorlabel Warner und den Hits „Losing My Religion“ und „Shiny Happy People“ erreichten sie weltweit Anerkennung und hohe Chartplätze. R.E.M. werden zu internationalen Rockstars. Michael Stipe entwickelt sich vom schüchternen Sänger zur charismatischen Bühnenpersönlichkeit. „Automatic For The People“ hieß das Album, mit dem R.E.M. Mitte der 1990er Jahre ihren Welterfolg noch ausbauen konnte. Große Konzerte auf monatelangen Tourneen zeigten dies eindrucksvoll. Die Band konnte und wollte aber nicht weiter Lieder zum Mitpfeifen und eingängige Balladen liefern, sondern künstlerisch vorankommen. Viele Fans waren enttäuscht, aber die Integrität der Band R.E.M. blieb gewahrt.    Vier Studenten aus Athens, Georgia, geprägt von Glamrock, Folk und Punk, die anfangen, ihre eigene musikalische Sprache zu finden. R.E.M. sind mit ihrem rätselhaften Gitarrenrock schnell Lieblinge der Collegeszene der USA. Später werden sie zu einer zentralen Band der Alternative Rock-Szene. Die flirrende, sofort erkennbare Stimme des Sängers Michael Stipe, dazu seine lyrischen Texte und seine charismatische Bühnenpersönlichkeit – R.E.M. haben mehr und mehr Erfolg. Lange bleiben sie mit ihrer Musik in den Nischen, suchen die Nähe zu ihren Anhängern, verweigern sich den Mechanismen des Rockmusikwelt. „It´s The End Of The World“ und „The One I Love“ machen sie in den USA weit bekannt.    Number 4: Jimmy Page/Robert Plant (1)

   Nach dem Ende von Led Zeppelin geht Robert Plant viele andere Wege. Schon in den 80er Jahren veröffentlicht er sowohl Alben mit Klassikern, neu interpretiert mit Freunden, als auch neue Lieder auf einer Reihe von Alben. Die Klänge sind leichter, poppiger. Robert Plant weitet seinen musikalischen Horizont ständig. 1993 erreicht mit „Fate of Nation“ sein Schaffen einen Höhepunkt, erstmals geht er auch wieder auf Tournee. Jimmy Page versucht, mit The Firm, einer neu formierten Band um ihn und den Sänger Paul Rodgers, mit dem Powerrock der 80er Jahre mitzuhalten. Nach zwei Alben ist aber damit Schluss. In den 90er Jahren arbeiten Page und Plant überraschend wieder zusammen. Angestiftet von dem Erfolg der „unplugged“-Welle nehmen sie ein opulentes Album (No Quarter, 1994) mit Led Zeppelin-Klassikern und zwei Orchestern auf, einem westlichen und einem östlichen. Eine Welttournee schließt sich an. Die Hoffnung der Fans erfüllt sich offenbar: die beide kündigen anschließend neues Material an.    Number 5: Led Zeppelin (2)

   Led Zeppelin waren nach ihren vier ersten Alben zum Maßstab der Rockmusik geworden. Gewaltig war ihre musikalische Kraft, scheinbar unerschöpflich ihre Quellen. Auch ihr Album „Houses of the Holy“ im Jahr 1973 wurde ein weltweiter Riesenerfolg. Ein Unfall, private Schicksalsschläge, die Drogensucht einzelner Bandmitglieder lenkten die Konzentration von Led Zeppelin auf andere Gebiete, ein Konzertfilm wollte ebenfalls nicht gelingen. Schließlich starb der Schlagzeuger John Bonham – das Ende der Band 1980. Das Gefüge war zerbrochen, einzelne Konzerte in den Jahrzehnten danach pflegten den Mythos Led Zeppelin und zeigten, durch die weltweite Aufmerksamkeit, die höchste Wertschätzung für diese Band.
