Do you know that shoes are designed to last 1000 years, but most of us just wear them for 100 days? And because of the materials that they are made from, with every step we take, our shoes leave behind an invisible trail of contaminants, which can potentially harm the soil, water, and animal health. Just 2022 alone, 24 billion pairs of sneakers were manufactured, and each pair contained different types of synthetic and plastic materials. As a result, every year about tens of thousands tons of microplastics seep into our oceans. Moreover, footwear alone accounts for 1.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Finally the footwear industry is starting to do something about it. Several brands are starting to develop plant-based soles that won’t leave plastics behind when they break down. However, because of the complexity of the shoemaking process, it’s nearly impossible to recycle shoes or take them apart to reuse the materials. So perhaps every time you want to buy a pair of sneakers or shoes, think about the environmental impact your purchase might have.

This episode is an inspirational story about a person who simply refuses to give up on her childhood dream. When Kristie Ting was little, all she wanted to do was to own an ice cream truck so she could drive around and spread the joy of eating ice cream around. Her love of ice cream was passed down from her family, mainly her grandfather, who used to take her to McDonald to get soft-served ice cream. However it was during an exchange trip to Japan that solidified her passion for the dessert. She was exposed to a variety of interesting ice cream flavors, like matcha and peach melon (哈蜜瓜). Despite her strong love for ice cream, she didn’t get a job involving it. Instead, she worked at an advertising firm, where she saw and experienced discrimination and bullying. She bided her time and quietly scheming about her next move. One day five years ago, while scrolling online, she saw a vintage ice cream van on sale. She jumped on the opportunity, and started her ice cream truck business before the pandemic hit. During the lockdowns, she was allowed to drive her ice cream truck to beaches and spread the joy to communities. Her story serves as a reminder of never giving up on your dream.

At the end of June this year, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia was finally off the endangered list. The Great Barrier Reef is located in the northeast coast of Australia, and it’s enormous. It’s actually bigger than the Great Wall of China. Moreover it’s the only living thing that’s visible from space. Since 1981, the Great Barrier Reef has been a world heritage site. It’s home to more than four hundred species of colorful corals, 1500 species of fish as well as home to some endangered marine animals such as the large green sea turtles. For a while UNESCO has been worried about coral bleaching, which is caused by rising water temperature and the soil and chemicals washing into the ocean water. When coral bleaching happens, tiny algae living in corals start to die off, making corals turn white. Australian government is committed to keeping this spectacular reef safe and alive.

Have you ever heard of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest? The competition has been taking place in California, US for more than fifty years. The winner of this year’s contest is an eight-year- old Pekingese named Wild Thang. This is Wild Thang’s fifth entry to the contest. After coming second on three prior occasions, Wild Thang finally won this year’s championship. As a puppy, Wild Thang caught a virus that rendered his teeth unable to grow, so his tongue always hangs out of his mouth. The goal of this contest is to encourage people to adopt dogs from shelter rather than buy them from breeders. The contest also wants people to celebrate the imperfection that makes them so special and unique. The owner of Wild Thang received $5000 and an appearance on NBC’s Today Show.

Have you ever heard of a country named San Marino? I have to admit that I have never heard of it before doing this podcast. Anyway, San Marino is the world’s oldest republic. Legend has it that it was founded by a Croatian stonemason named San Marino on September 3, 301. He and his followers climbed to this country in the mountains of northern Italy to escape the prosecution of Christians by the Roman Empire Diocletian. San Marino is so tiny that it doesn’t have an airport or a train station. To get there, you have to land in Italy and get there by car. The population of the country is only 33600, and it has a nickname of Land of Clifftop Castles. Because the country is so ancient, the roads are all paved with cobblestone. There are lifts or cable cars dotted all over the capital to help people who have difficulties walking up the steep cobblestone roads.

    to admit (v.) 得承認

    republic (n.) 共和國

    was founded (v.)

Chronic absenteeism has been a huge problem for the US educational system since the pandemic ended. Educators and lawmakers are experimenting with different ways to solve the issue. One that Ohio state has come up with is to pay kids to go to school. If this policy is approved, the state government will run some tests among kindergartners and ninth graders. The students will be split up into two groups. One will get paid $25 for every two weeks of high attendance while the other will receive no pay at all. At the end of the study, schools will compare the attendance rates. I’m definitely curious about the outcomes of this experiment.

Japan is the most popular country to visit among Taiwanese tourists. But do you know that Japan is the only country among the world’s wealthiest democracies that has not legalized same-sex marriages. And a Netflix reality show hopes to change this. Over ten episodes of “The Boyfriend” will be available in 190 countries beginning on July 9, a group of nine men gather in a luxury beach house outside Tokyo. The content is wholesome and entirely rated in G because the executive producer, said he wanted to “portray same-sex relationships as they really are.” Members from the LGBTQ community have high expectations for the show. Although polls show that more than 70 percent of the Japanese public supports legalizing same-sex unions, gay and transgender people are still subject to discrimination and hate speech. A college professor who has studied Japan’s LGBTQ culture for a long time wonders whether the show will bring about eventual political change though because she said cutesification doesn’t normally bring about radical political reform.

Do you know that in Japan when women want to seek sterilization procedures, they will encounter conditions that are the most burdensome in the world? How so? First they must already have children and have to prove that pregnancy might endanger their health. Moreover they are required to obtain the consent of their spouses. Therefore surgeries like hysterectomies(子宮切除術), tubal ligation(輸卵管結紮)are impossible for single, childless women to obtain. Currently five women are suing Japanese government for violating their constitutional rights to equality and self-determination, demanding laws like Maternal Protection Act be overturned. They described the law as excessive paternalism and said it encouraged the society to view women’s bodies as only a birthing vessel. Experts say that plaintiffs(起訴人)may face considerable barrier and pushback because the government is pushing to increase birth rate in Japan, which is among the lowest in developed countries.

Arthur, he recognized that selling new drugs requires a seduction of not just the patient but the doctor who writes the prescription.

He would devise campaigns that appealed directly to clinicians, placing splashy ads in medical journals and distributing literature to doctors’ offices.
