A lot of you might be wondering... How can blogging change your life?

I've got a real treat for you in this episode of Untapped because I'll be sharing 11 Ways Blogging Can Change Your Life and Earn You a Living!

Eleven years ago, almost to the month, I started my very first blog.

It was 2008 and I hadn’t long been in Vancouver, Canada, when I figured I wanted a better way than a group email, to share my massive life changes and new journey with my friends and family.

I signed up for a free Bloggr account via Google and started posting.

Even though I had no idea what I was doing at the time, writing had always came easily to me.

So, it felt natural to turn my creative passion into a possible revenue source.

I had a fair bit of time on my hands as I’d quit my corporate job in London, taken off to Canada to play World Championship Ultimate Frisbee, and now was figuring out what to do with my life...hoping that starting a business was something I could actually figure out.

Little did I know this would be a love affair that would continue well past any long term relationships I’ve had to date.

Nor did I know that it would allow me to launch my first and second business, and earn me a full-time income in just a few years!

To celebrate, I felt the need to share the 11 lessons I've learned from blogging and how they've helped me get paid to be ME.

Today, I'm still blogging - as you can obviously see from this blog post ;) - and I know that I'll continue this type of content for years to come.

I hope you learn a lot from this episode, and I hope that these 11 lessons can help you build your very own business just from blogging.

Blogging can be a truly great way to create a thriving online business, so you'll definitely want to tune in to the full episode for all the details.

So, whether you're on your way somewhere, working out, or just chilling out at home, get ready for a whole lot of goodness.

In this podcast you’ll learn why:

#1. Starting a blog gives you a purpose

#2. Running a blog makes you more disciplined

#3. Blogging helps you establish a writing habit

    #4. Blogging builds your credibility

#5. A Blog lets you build a community

#6. Blogging gives you a platform

#7. Blogging makes you a better writer

#8. Blogging lets you make money from affiliate marketing

#9. Blogging helps you monetize your content

#10. Blogging lets you build a real business

#11. This 3 pronged approach helps you consistently create and publish blog posts

  • 040 - Three Ingredients to a Thriving Online Business

What's the best way to build a thriving online business?

According to Shane Melaugh, CEO and co-founder of Thrive Themes, there are three key ingredients.

At first glance, they seem deceptively simple, and in many ways they are.

    1. You need to have a great offer
    2. You need traffic to your website
    3. You need a website that converts

Yet actually focusing on them and implementing them is where most entrepreneurs fall down.

This has been something Shane has tapped into from the get go, helping and teaching entrepreneurs how to do these 3 things well.

In fact he's done what so many entrepreneurs do, which is to create a solution to a problem they're having, since no one else seems to be doing it well.

Often our biggest frustrations are the best source of a new product or service idea.

Not that you're your own ideal customer, but typically, and once you validate your assumptions, many other people often are having the same struggle or problem too, and want it solved.

    Not an Overnight Success Story

For Shane, he realized early on when he was taking courses and learning as fast as he could, what it took to build an online business, that most courses he was taking sucked.

He also felt the people teaching them weren't sharing the right information, or what they were teaching was out of date.

So he created his own online course back in 2010 about SEO which he sold 2,000 copies of and made six figures of revenue from!

But he's quick to point out, it wasn't an overnight success story.

This actually happened over the course of 2 years with the first launch of his course only making a few dozen sales.

What I appreciate most about Shane, is he's one of the few male online marketers who's not a BS artist and really tells it like it is.

That is, that the reality of building a successful business usually takes years and LOTS of trial and error before actually reaching your big lofty dreams and goals.

Problem Solving is the Best Way to Learn

Back in 2010 when he launched his course, Shane didn't have the awesome platforms we have today that are all-in-one and let you create, sell, and host an online course without the technical headache like Podia.

Instead, he built his first course on a WordPress website that he had to heavily customise to act as his course area with added membership access.

He knew that in order for his business to thrive, he had to overcome obstacles and DO the complicated and difficult stuff.

Once he had, he was in a much better position to create his own solution to his problem in the form of, the highly successful Thrive Themes, which includes blazingly fast WordPress templates and plugins, built to get more traffic, more subscribers and more customers.

From there he's gone on to continue to build excellent products to help online entrepreneurs thrive, and release fantastic free content as well as regular and amazing courses.

    In this episode you'll learn:
    • How to grow your business online
    • Why it's better to be stumbling forward than to be sitting paralysed
    • Why overnight success isn't realistic and what you should be aiming for instead
    • Shane's 3 ingredients for a thriving online business

  • 039 - Why Less is More

Less is more... We've all heard this phrase, but do you actually know what it means and why it's true?

The phrase less is more means that having just the essential things is better than having way too much of superfluous things.

It allows you to focus on what matters.

Recently I sat down to lunch with the lovely Kit Whelan, co-founder of 7in7 Digital Nomad Conference, which is an amazing vision of 7 conferences being held in 7 continents over 7 years!

I am actually honoured to be a keynote speaker at the 7in7 conference in Wellington, New Zealand happening 22-28 October.

I'm going to be speaking about prioritizing what matters the most in your life and will definitely be touching on LifePilot and what it's meant to living with intention and making my dreams a reality.

Kit told me that after this event, they're holding a Reading Retreat in a castle in Scotland, which to me sounds simply delicious.

And it clearly did to others too as it sold out in a day, and for good reason, because people are craving to take time out and give themselves permission to simply do less.

Getting Clear on Your Perfect Day

Personally, one of my perfect days, consists of jam-packing as much as I can from 6am to 9pm at night, but that's because I'm energized by living life to the full.

This includes meeting like-minded friends, training for my triathlon, working on my business, interviewing guests for my podcast, and spending time playing with my gorgeous dogs.

To others, that probably seems freaking exhausting.

How I make all those things work is by managing my time well and prioritising what matters.

I also realized that while I pack in a bunch in my life, I also do this in my work and in the way I teach and I'm guilty of trying to over deliver by delivering too much!

So with my new Launch Your Damn Course Accelerator, which I'm running three sold out cohorts of right now, I've made a considered effort to simplify to the essentials.

As you can imagine, teaching a course about preselling and launching your own online course could be super overwhelming when you consider all the moving parts involved that I need to teach.

So, as Leading Learner, my job is to teach them how to do less but get more meaningful results.

It seems to be working, by through my intentional design of the accelerator, and my students are accomplishing so much.

The importance of taking time to chill out

I'm a fan of jam-packing as much as I can into each day, but I also know the importance of taking some downtime and just chilling out.

That's why I'm pretty excited to take a truly decent break in December.

I'll be lounging around, enjoying nature, and reading books - basically just resting up after my half Ironman.

My upcoming break got me thinking...

I haven't done a retreat in a while, so I'm planning to hold one next year in 2020 because I adore imagining and designing these experiences and then making them a reality.

In the past I've called them the 'Freedom Retreat' and in addition to fpcusing on business and mindset, I'd also add in special experiences like massages, taking cooking lessons, and relaxing.

But, what if next year's retreat was the 'Less is More' retreat where we focus on taking a break while still envisioning your best life by focusing on having a great mindset - basically taking LifePilot to the next level.

If you're interested in joining me early April 2020 in Bali for a 'Less is More' retreat, send me a DM on Instagram or shoot me an email at [email protected] saying "Heck yeah to Bali!"

    In this episode you'll learn:
    • Why and how less is more
    • How I manage my time so that jam-packed days don't feel exhausting
    • Why taking a break can be beneficial to you and your business
    • About information for my next retreat

  • 038 - How to Build a Business on YouTube

Ever look at YouTube stars and wonder: how the heck do they actually make money from YouTube and more importantly, how did they build a business on this platform?

Well, on this episode of Untapped, I had the treat of chatting with Aaron Nace, the founder of PHLEARN, about how he built his YouTube channel from the ground up into a full time business.

I'm pretty excited to share this interview with you because I've never had the chance to speak to someone that has a YouTube channel with almost 1.8 million subscribers.

In our interview, Aaron shares his journey from being an independent photographer and photo retoucher to building his company PHLEARN, which provides accessible photography and Photoshop lessons to people around the world through their video tutorials.

Since starting PHLEARN in 2011, Aaron has turned what used to be just a creative passion into his full time business.

This is another great example of how online content creators are transforming their side hustles into their main sources of incomes.

What's really neat about Aaron's journey is how he was able to build a business on YouTube from the ground up.

He saw an industry that was booming yet the online space seemed to lack the tools and education for all the people who wanted to get into that industry.

So, he took all the techniques he learned over the years as a professional photographer and started releasing video tutorials for free.

Once he realized that people were actually invested in what he had to teach, Aaron decided to offer more advanced lessons as part of a paid subscription service on his company's website.

He found his sweetspot of what he's passionate about, what he can offer, and what people are willing to pay for - an awesome example of how you can get paid to be you!

To hear Aaron's secrets to YouTube success and all the details on how he built a business on YouTube, make sure to tune in to the full episode!

    In this episode you'll learn:
    • How to develop your business from the ground up on YouTube.

  • 037 - 6 Lessons Starting a Podcast Has Taught Me

Over the years, I've learned so many lessons from starting a podcast.

When I started one back in 2014, I didn't expect just how much joy it would bring me and how much value it would add to my life.

So, in honor of International Podcast Day, I wanted to share the 6 lessons starting a podcast has taught me. If you're thinking of starting one or thinking about giving up on yours, then this episode is definitely for you.

Now, some people might say that there are too many podcasts out there and the medium is oversaturated, but guess what?

People have been saying the same exact thing since when I started my first podcast back in 2014!

There might be a ton of podcasts out there, but that shouldn't discourage you from sharing your unique voice with people who truly need to hear what you have to say.

Why You Should Start a Podcast

Starting a podcast has given me so many amazing opportunities to chat with guests who intrigue and fascinate me. These guests are often doing really neat things, some of which I'd love to do and some which I'd never do but still admire.

Another thing I love about podcasts is the versatility of them.

The quality of podcasts has gone through the roof within the last few years alone, and some have whole production crews and hefty budgets behind them. Whereas I like to keep mine advert free by paying for my podcast by myself.

Speaking of which, if you're a fan of the Untapped show where I teach you how to unlock your potential and get paid to be you, then show some love by sending me a coffee or dinner.

6 Lessons I Learned From Starting a PodcastLesson 1: Podcasts are amazing for personal development and learning.

Whether you prefer having guests in a more interview style podcast or prefer offering a more solo teaching podcast, podcasts are sure to make you learn and develop.

If you decide to have guests on your podcast, then you'd obviously be learning from their experiences and perspectives whereas researching topics on your own and sharing your personal experiences can also be a great way to develop.

Personally, I love both of these styles.

Lately, I've been loving having people come on Untapped and share their unique experiences and outlooks on topics that relate to what I try to teach everyday: how to get paid to be you.

The people that I usually invite on my show are people I find fascinating and who have something to teach both me and you. These guests have done some incredible things and have so many gold nuggets of wisdom that I absolutely love sharing with all of you who tune in.

While my style of podcasting is more of an informal conversation where I do a little bit of background research and then ask questions during the interview that I'm really curious about, I also think more formatted and planned out interviews can be successful, too.

Lesson 2: Podcasts can force you to become more disciplined and consistent with content creation.

Speaking of planning, podcasts have been the one medium that I've been able to be consistent with since the early days of my business.

    That's not a coincidence.

In fact, podcasts are incredibly great tools for making you become more disciplined and produce content on a consistent basis.

When I first started out at podcasting, I was super inconsistent. But, knowing that my listeners were expecting a new episode each week forced me to stick to a schedule and have everything released by their deadlines.

What I found to be helpful is to do a batch of interviews so that I'm weeks ahead. This also helps everyone on my team to get all of their tasks done in advance so that nothing slips through the cracks.

I've also been able to create an incredible SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) that is super detailed and precise so that anyone who joins my team will immediately know how to create, publish, and promote the podcast.

We have also have a template in Asana that has everyone assigned to their respective tasks where they can mark off once they've completed something.

If you've been struggling to put out content and stick to your schedule, I highly recommend using a podcast to get you back on track!

Lesson 3: Podcasts are fantastic business tools.

The fact that you have people turning up each week to listen to what you have to say is a powerful testament to how podcasts can be used to grow your business.

Podcasts can build up your credibility, authority, and integrity in whatever it is you want to share or teach.

For me, I make sure my episodes focus on living a lifestyle of freedom by teaching people how to get paid to be them.

My listeners can count on learning something that will help them in these areas whenever they tune in to an episode of Untapped. And I've learned that when your audience feels like they can trust you, they're more likely to become clients or customers.

It's also more likely that people will recommend your podcasts to other people, which cultivates a truly wonderful cycle of engagement and exposure.

Lesson 4: Podcasts are great revenue-generating tools.

Along with being fantastic business tools, podcasts are also great tools for generating revenue.

With tons of sponsorships and advertisement opportunities out there nowadays, you could easily create a passive revenue stream for yourself.

Personally, I like to keep my podcasts advert free, but I will participate in sponsorships if they feel right and are relevant to what I'm sharing.

I never promote anything just for the sake of promoting it, and I like to think that has helped build up my credibility.

Aside from the ads and sponsorships, podcasts are also wonderful avenues for promoting your own products and offerings.

So, not only could you generate a passive revenue stream from promoting things you really love and use on a daily basis, but you could also generate a more active revenue stream by promoting your own stuff to an audience you know will be interested!

Lesson 5: Podcasts create lasting friendships and bonds.

The people that I've met over the years on my show and other shows are unforgettable.

I may have forgotten the shows I've been on, or the specifics on what we talked about, but I never forget the bonds that I make with the people I've chatted with.

My latest guest on Untapped, Jenny Plant, was actually a guest 3 years ago and reached out to me again recently about being back on my show. I said yes, of course, and it was really neat to see how she had grown and fallen back in love with her business during that 3 year period.

I love giving people a platform, and I know that I've been grateful to others who have done the same for me.

It's really important for us as creators to support one another, and it's a total win-win situation. So, if you have been a guest on any of my podcasts or if I was a guest on yours, this one is for you and I'd love to have you back on my show or come back on yours.

Also, a special shout out to Rolly, my podcast editor, who has been listening to my voice for quite some time now and always delivers fantastic final products. Thank you for the work that you do!

Lesson 6: Podcasts let your voice be heard.

Looking at the stats for my podcast, there are about a 100 or so countries where my podcast is being listened to.

    Crazy, right?

That's the incredible power of podcasts!

They allow you to distribute your voice, your message, and your experiences all across the globe to tons of diverse communities.

    That is a gift.

    That is a privilege.

And, really, all I have to do is a hold a mic and start recording.

So, if you have something to say, say it.

I promise you, you'll be surprised at how many people will want to listen.

So, if you enjoyed the 6 lessons I learned from starting a podcast, then make sure to check out the full episode where I dive more into all the details of each lesson.

Also, share this post with anyone you'd think would benefit from it and send some love if you're a fan of the Untapped show. I'll be sure to send some love back to you and give you a shout out on my next episode.

  • 036 - How to Fall in Love With Your Business

Do you want to fall in love with your business? If so, then make sure to tune in to this week's episode of Untapped.

On this episode, I got to chat with the absolutely lovely Jenny Plant who has a thriving Account Management training business. We've been friends for years, and I was so happy to have the chance to interview her.

Jenny shared with me her journey from struggling to run multiple businesses at once to circling back to her Account Management training business, which is what she ultimately fell in love with.

Once she began to implement the "Profit First" methodology by Mike Michalowicz in her business and personal life as well as put all her energy and focus into account management skills and promoting her signature course, "Account Accelerator", Jenny began to feel happier and more relaxed for the first time in ages.

She was able to take all her skills and experiences and funnel them into a business that feels right for her, even though she had moved away from it.

Does this resonate with you too?

Sometimes we can get discouraged by the work we're doing and even become bored. When that happens, we really need to get curious about the reasons behind our feelings and go on an internal journey.

Don't mistake this for throwing away everything you know, though. Instead, build upon what you've already learned and figure out what it is that taps into your sweetspot of what you know, what you're good at, and what you can get paid for. Once you do that, you'll be able to fall in love with your business.

    In this episode you'll learn:

    • How to fall in love with your business
    • Why it's important to funnel your skills and experiences into a business that feels right for you
    • The importance of constantly being a Leading Learner
    • How Julia went from being stressed out and stretched too thin to feeling energized and motivated by her work

Side hustles - could they really replace your full time income?

You bet they can. In fact creating your own side hustle is becoming quite the trend. With bestselling books like Side Hustle: From idea to income in 27 days my friend Chris Guillebeau just released, and there are many blogs and podcasts dedicated to it.

Judging from a State of the Side Hustle survey of over 2,000 people done by Podia this year, the online course/ digital downloads/membership space is only going to grow in the foreseeable future, as more folks are looking to leave their full time employment to make a go of creating passive income than ever before.

  • 034 - The Art of Changing Your Business with Julia Kelly

What does changing your business actually look like? As in starting a new business in a completely different industry and having a totally new offering?

Can you make such a big leap and be successful? What does it take to make not only the shift but the mindset shift?

On this episode of Untapped, I got to hear all about what it takes from Julia Kelly, co-Founder of Rigits, a remote bookkeeping services company.

Yet just a few years ago Julia had started gone from being a successful caricature artist to building a whole business and team around doing this for corporates and at events.

In fact I interviewed her about it on my Suitcase Entrepreneur podcast on Debunking the Starving Artist Myth, as I thought her story was really cool.

It's a perfect example of how Julia took her skills she learned in a job she applied for, and turned it into a side hustle and then a full blown business that almost runs without her.

Now she has a completely different business and a new team, and is well aware that she needs to remain relevant in an industry being very much affected by the future of work - in that accountants are being replaced with systems and automation.

If you tuned into my podcast Embracing the Future of the Future with Frances Valintine then you'll learn just how quickly the world is changing and adapting to the way in which we are working and who's doing the work.

Julia is well aware of that and we discussed how they're adapting to stay relevant and thrive in this new era, and in many ways she's always been adapting and following her heart.

Julia's journey began in college where she started her solopreneur career of being a caricature artist. She was able to grow her skills into a six-figure business and hired other artists as well.

However, after a year, Julia realized that she wasn't being challenged anymore and that her successful business (which she's still running today) was not going to be able to grow anymore.

So what did she do next?

She went back to her roots as a graduate with a B.A. in Accounting and teamed up with a friend and started a company that does bookkeeping and accounting for small businesses and startups.

It was a completely different realm of work from the caricature business, but Julia found it to be exciting plus it tapped into her sweetspot of her accounting knowledge and what she knew would be profitable to her AND beneficial to her clients.

By taking a risk and changing her business, Julia was able to have a business that had a recurring revenue model - something that her caricature business lacked. She also found that she thrived in having a team and didn't enjoy being a lone wolf after all.

If you're also in a rut and feel like you're not progressing or enjoying your work anymore, definitely check out the full interview to learn more about the art of changing your business and how to tap into your potential!

    In this episode you'll learn:

    • What it's like to go from a solo operation to being in a partnership and having employees
    • Why Julia started another business in a completely different industry and what she learned by doing it
    • How to juggle two businesses by having one on autopilot
    • The most common mistakes business owners make with money and how to avoid them

  • 033 - Embracing the Future of the Future with Frances Valintine

What is the future of the future? And how the heck can you be part of it so that you’re not left behind in the past?

That is the topic of today’s episode with the one and only Frances Valintine, founder of The Mind Lab & Tech Futures Lab.

Frances Valintine is one heck of a mover and shaker. And she believes that we’re living in a time of great advancement as well as rapid disruption. She believes that the progress and the ability to look forward and plan for tomorrow is essential for long term success.

Frances is at the cutting edge of what we need to do to stay relevant as we move into a new era filled with uncertainty as technology takes over our jobs allowing us to essentially tap into more of our human skills.

If you listened to Episode 32 on Untapped last week, I shared my presentation that I did recently talking about these major trends and forces happening and the future of work and learning.

Frances takes us even further because she is living and breathing this. At the time of our interview, she had just finished up the Future of the Future conference that she hosted where she interviewed all these incredible people on stage.

What I love about Frances is that she’s extremely forward thinking by the way she looks at how we reinvigorate our existing skills, adopt new practices, and integrate people who think differently in our businesses.

As the founder and CEO of The Mind Lab & Tech Futures Lab, Frances works in the space between the whole ecosystem of learners from young children to experienced corporate leaders.

While Tech Futures Lab helps organisations and individuals to navigate the contemporary world of business, The Mind Lab was developed to empower students, schools, teachers and principals to develop contemporary knowledge and practical skills for today’s rapidly evolving world and the future of work.

She knows that our economic success has a greater reliance on people who can combine science, technology, design and creativity in ways that we are only just starting to realize.

So in our interview, we discuss a lot of those things. And I think you are going to find it fascinating. I hope it’s going to open your eyes, expand your mind, and really get you thinking about what role you are going to play in the future of work and just how you can thrive in it.

    In this episode you’ll learn:

    • What the future of work looks like and what that means for you
    • Why reinvigorating your skills and learning new skills is vital now more than ever
    • How to thrive and remain relevant in the rapidly evolving world
    • Frances’ journey to become one of the most influential leaders in New Zealand

  • 032 - The Future of Work is Learning

The Future of Work is learning - what does that mean?

If you've been following me for a while, you know that I'm all about staying relevant and keeping up with the ever-changing world of business.

As machines are starting to take over a lot of our jobs by automating and streamlining things, we need to figure out how to revamp our skills and get back to more of our human talents that can't be mimicked by AI.

So, instead of the robots taking over, it's more so that a lot of the jobs we're used to will disappear while jobs we haven't even thought about will start to appear. This is why it's so important that we stay on top of our game by becoming leading learners so that we won't be left behind in the dust as the world passes us by.

On today's episode of Untapped, I'll be sharing a recording of the talk I shared at an Inspire Group event, which I organized and ran. Inspire Group is an online learning company, and the purpose of this event was to inform our clients about what's about to head their way and what they need to start thinking about.

It was also a great way to showcase all the trends that are coming up and how the Future of Work is learning.

    In this episode you’ll learn:

    • What the Future of Work actually is
    • How automation can and will benefit us
    • How we can collaborate effectively with the robots
    • What changes and trends have already started to happen
