#414: Kelly Hays -- Backpacking the AT and the CDT, Taking on Her First Ultra by Chris Ward

This week we are joined by adventurer, photographer, ultrarunner, and awesome guy Howie Stern!!

Howie just finished photographing the first part of Ray Zahab and Kevin Vallely’s expedition crossing Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic.

In this episode we’ll talk all about this expedition and the first one Howie went on with Ray in Baffin Island. We also talk about what the brutal cold feels like, the challenges of getting to these remote places, and what it’s like to be approached by Arctic Wolves!!

This week we are chatting with ocean adventurer and incredible speaker Cyril Derreumaux!!

Cyril just wrapped up his grand adventure of solo kayaking across the Atlantic Ocean. 71 days of isolation, endurance and self reliance! Through this experience he truly got the opportunity to connect with the ocean spiritually while embracing the routine of the day to day.

This episode is all about this adventure and is one of my favorite conversations I've had for the podcast! We talk about the scariest moment of his kayak when he encountered a giant swordfish right next to his boat, what one learns about the world when they feel so completely insignificant on the ocean, and how he has felt since returning to land!

Phil Pinti is about 18 days out from toeing the start line of the Arizona Monster 300!! Once the gun goes off, he will have a week to take on this insanely long adventure that traverses the deserts of southern Arizona. This will be it's inaugaral year and is organized by the awesome Candice Burt and Destination Trails.

In this episode, we talk about his mindset a month out and his training up until this point before being joined by Randy Stephenson, Phil's crew chief for this event.

In the second half of the show, co-host Thomas Mullins picks John’s brain for info about sections of the Arizona Trail that Thomas will be tackling on foot in April during Destination Trail’s Arizona Monster 300!!

….yes that’s right…300 miles of trail running through southern Arizona. It is the first year for the event and is looking to be beyond epic!
