The Caps also move on from Kevin McCarthy per The Athletic: "It isn’t not much of a surprise that McCarthy is out, too. The 65-year-old has coached professionally for 33 seasons, making stops as an NHL assistant in Hartford, Carolina, Philadelphia, Nashville and Washington. He had served as Laviolette’s top lieutenant dating back to the 2003-04 season with the Hurricanes. The Caps AHL affiliate Hershey bears is headed to the Calder Cup Playoffs With the weekends win, the Bears finished the 2022-23 season with 97 points. In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the breakdown day for the Capitals. In this epiosde he talks Brain Maclellan, Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson. MacLellan said he had been open to discussing a future for Laviolette in D.C. but it became apparent during a Friday morning meeting that a breakup was best for both parties. We had a conversation and the conversation went in a certain direction and we both decided we’d make changes,” MacLellan said. MacLellan said he plans to cast a wide net as he searches for Laviolette’s replacement and acknowledged — without naming names, obviously — that he may wait to talk to assistants who are on teams currently in the playoffs. As far as what he’s looking for in his next bench boss, MacLellan said he wants a coach that can manage stars and develop young players — an admittedly rare skill set. “Our group is changing,” he said. “We’re trying to get younger; we brought in some younger players. It’s going to be different in that you want a coach that can work with young guys, and we’re going to have a veteran group at the top that kind of needs a veteran coach. It’s going to be a challenge to find the right guy for that. … I don’t know that we can find it, but we’ll do the best we can.” Later Dan talks about Dylan Strome “I kind of feel like that Pittsburgh game was the game that sunk the ship,” the center said of the last-minute loss at PPG Paints Arena on March 25. “We had some chances after that. But if we win that game…”Strome lamented a few other losses throughout the season that ended up costing the Caps at the end. “You look at some of the games at home,” he said, “we lost to teams below us in the standings like Arizona, Anaheim, Columbus — all at home. That’s six points you’d love to have back.” In the final segment Dan talks about Tom Wilson *Wilson Towards the end of the year, we just — for whatever reason — we just weren’t where we wanted to be as a group.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about how Peter Laviolette requested a meeting with GM Brian Maclellan to let him know he wanted to part ways. Mac said that the Caps wanted to move on as well. I guess the truth is somewhere in the middle. The impact of this next coach signing is big for Mac to, or he might be looking for a new job if this next coach doesn't get the desired result.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals loss to the New Jersey Devils. The Caps at one point lead 4-1. The Capitals were in control for the first two periods before New Jersey rallied and tied the game. NBC Sports Washington: "The New Jersey Devils scored twice over the final 20 minutes to erase a two-goal Capitals lead and force overtime. And with just 26 seconds remaining in the extra frame, 19-year-old rookie Luke Hughes beat Capitals goaltender Darcy Kuemper for the game-winner on a wraparound, his first NHL goal, to give the Devils a 5-4 victory." Later in the show Dan talks about Craig smith and how he scored his 200th career goal. Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome continued to dominate and we look for big things from them next season. In the fonal segment Dan talks about an unexpected backup goalie. Reid Cooper got a call and was offered an opportunity to backup Darcy Kuemper The 24-year-old played 27 games with the NCAA's Division III Curry College this season, going 20-6-1 with a .935 save percentage. He also played three years at Robert Morris University.

They first talk about the Capitals are continuing to play hard even though these games "mean nothing" We talk about what worked and what didn't. Then they talk about the myriad of injuries this team faced and how that factored into their overall outcome. Later they talk about what players should get dealt in the off season and which players they should prioritize in returning in the fall. They then talk about what players in Hershey are due for a promotion. Later they talk about the goalie situation and should they consider Fucale or Shepard over Lindgren. To close out the show they talk about Peter Laviolette and his future in Washington. Is there a better option as head coach?

In this edition of Locked on Caps Dan talks about the latest with Peter Laviolette. Peter is the winningest US born coach and is ranked 8th all time in wins. These types of coaches don't grow on trees, so the Caps should tread carefully. It sounds like ownership and GM Brian Maclellan like him, they're just weighing out all of their options. Another thing to consider is that Peter is set to be a free agent so that adds a wrinkle to the equation. Later Dan talks about the latest with the Alex Ovechkin and TJ Oshie injury and how serious they are and can we expect them to be ready to start next season. To close out the show Dan talks about what Capitals players most likely played their last season in the district ?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the possibility of the Capitals trading Tom Wilson. Wilson only has one year left on his contract with the Capitals. Would they ever entertain the idea of trading him. Dan Rosen on NHL.com said: "Maybe Mantha gets traded. Maybe Wilson does. I don’t think you can rule it out because his contract expires after next season. But the Capitals are not tearing it down and it’s hard to do an invasive surgery to the roster with the contracts they have signed and the history the greatest player in team history is embarking on.” Later Dan talks about how TJ Oshie is out for the remainder of the season and what that means for his future and the future for the Capitals. Then Dan talks about how the shorthanded Capitals took down the New York Islanders. How were they able to do it?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Tom Wilson and how he continues to dominate even though the "season is over" “He's a great player to play with,” Dylan Strome said after the game. “He's a great guy to have on your team and not a very fun guy to play against. He had some big hits. He turns momentum for us in tons of ways on the ice. He kills penalties and plays on the first power play unit. That's a good hockey player.” His stats were quite impressive in the last game NBC Sports Washington: "Even with the season winding down now that the Capitals have been eliminated from postseason contention, Wilson has made his presence felt over their last few games, particularly on the physical front. In addition to registering a point on both of their goals in the Capitals’ 4-2 loss to the Florida Panthers" Later in the show Dan talks about what the Caps need to prioritize before the start of next season. The center position seems to be one of the biggest positions of need before the next season starts. Then Dan talks about Hendrix Lapierre and how he's really improving his game

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the tough decisions that lie ahead for Capitals GM Brian Maclellan. This team has missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. How does Mac plan on getting this team back on the tracks. According to Mike Vogel: "I’d pay close attention to MacLellan’s words on exit day, the day the Caps clean out their lockers, speak to media and sift through the rubble of a season gone awry. MacLellan is arguably the League’s most candid GM, and he isn’t shy about sharing his shopping list every spring when the offseason gets underway. Personnel plans in the hockey operations department are already well underway, and a host of possibilities and potential moves and paths to take this summer are already being discussed. When he took over this job nine years ago next month, MacLellan spoke of the need to add to the team’s defense. A month or so later, Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen were in the fold. MacLellan generally sets his objectives and then sets about achieving them, and I wouldn’t expect this summer to be any different. But yes, my sense is that the Caps are in for a big summer with some big moves.

Later Dan talks about Alex Ovechkin and missing the playoffs. Ovi is 37 years old and he has plans on winning more Stanley Cups while he's here. How do the Capitals plan on doing that?

In the last segment Dan talks about Charlie Lindgren and if they have a better option as backup goalie in Hunter Shepard. Chalie hasn't had a great season, should Mac see if there's a more viable option elsewhere?
