In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Anthony Mantha and what his future on the Capitals should be. To say he struggled this past season would be an understatement. Mantha finished with just 11 goals and 16 assists in 67 games while averaging 14:13 of ice time per contest, his fewest in any full season of his NHL career. Mantha was looking forward to a season without injury for the first time since joining the Caps. His first two seasons saw him sidelined for the lions share of the season. He also saw himself as a healthy scratch multiple times this past season Being scratched is a hard hit in the face but you come back and try to get things going and get your confidence and sometimes it’s way harder than people can imagine,” Mantha said. Mantha hired a mental coach to help him deal with his mental struggles this past season. The Capitals acquired Mantha at the 2021 NHL trade deadline in a blockbuster deal that sent Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik, a first-round pick and a second-round pick to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for the then-26-year-old. The deal hasn't aged like a fine wine and I think it's a safe bet that GM Brian Maclellan has regret over this deal. What will the future hold for Mantha on the team? I guess only time will tell. The Justin Trudel join Dan and they talk about the future of Oshie in DC and was Forsythe as bad as everyone thinks?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the future of Evgeny Kuznetsov in Washington. Kuzy scored his most goals (27) in the 2017-2018 season. He saw a bit of a dip in production in the years that followed and then he saw an increase in production when he scored 24 goals in the 2021-2022 season. Kuzy was drafted in the first round 26th overall in the 2010 draft. He's been a hot and cold player for the Caps.

In Evgeny Kuznetsov, Washington has chosen a Russian forward in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft for the fourth time (Alexandre Volchkov, Alexander Semin, Alex Ovechkin). Kuznetsov’s primary position is listed as center by the league’s Central registry, so this marks the third straight draft in which Washington has chosen a center with its first choice in the draft (Anton Gustafsson, Marcus Johansson).

The controversy this year is that Kuzy told Russian media that he wants to be traded out of DC. He has denied those report. His future in DC is uncertain and he will be a UFA after the 2025/2025 season.

IN this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Caps at this year's draft. The Capitals will be taking part in this year’s NHL Draft Lottery for the first time in nearly a decade (2014). There are some big names at this year's draft so the Caps could potentially be getting a lot better if they make the right selections. The Caps now have six picks in the 2023 NHL Draft, including two first-round picks and three total picks in the first two rounds. Washington owns their first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh-round picks, as well as Boston's first round-pick in 2023. NBC Sports Wshington: "The 2023 NHL Draft class is considered to be one of the deepest classes in recent years, highlighted by the likes of Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Matvei Michkov, Leo Carlsson and Zach Benson. With a little bit of luck, Washington could find their way into the top five and grab one of the league’s top prospects."

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talk about the off-season and about how more and more teams are claiming to be a good fit for Tom Wilson. Wilson is set to be and unrestricted free agent after next season. The argument that is being made is that Tom Wilson is getting older and trading him no would maximize his return. Dan strongly disagrees with the idea. Later Dan talks about how next season is the perfect time for the Caps to start to get younger. There's a lot of talented players in Hershey that could really help this team. Most notably Connor McMichael. The Caps should give him a longer look next season. In the lat segment Dan talks about Blaine Forsythe and was he really that bad. He was an assistant coach for the Capitals for 17 years. Ovechkin scored 188 of his NHL record 299 power-play goals in the 11 seasons Forsythe was in charge. Thats says a lot about what kind of coach Forsythe is.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the player interviews from breakdown day. Oshie, Backstrom, Ovechkin, Mantha, Kuemper and Kuznetsov give their thoughts on when this team went off the rails.

Alex Ovechkin said he believes the season took a turn for the worse when John Carlson got hurt on Dec. 23. Although the No. 1 defenseman returned three months later, the damage had been done in the captain’s eyes.“The Carly injury was painful,” he said. “When your best D is out long term, it sucks. Everything is changed — power play, penalty kill. Because he plays the most minutes in the game, the system was kind of changing as well.”*Kuzy

Added Evgeny Kuznetsov: “That’s where the hockey goes now. It’s not about how fast you skate, it’s how fast you’re thinking, how fast you move the puck.” MacLellan called Kuznetsov’s season “disappointing.” The 30-year-old scored 12 goals a year after putting up 24 and finished a team-worst minus-26. “It wasn’t as good as last year,” he said. “I liked his season last year; he played well. For whatever reason, he never quite found his game. I mean, there were stretches where I thought he played well but, overall, he underperformed.”*Oshie T.J. Oshie, who was sidelined three times this season due to a wonky back, had a minor procedure on his back on Friday to alleviate the discomfort.
