Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about a podcast (Cam and Strick Podcast ) where Peter Laviolette reflected on what it was like to know and coach Alex Ovechkin. “In three years, never once was it about Ovi scoring goals”, Laviolette said, refuting a question regarding Ovechkin’s chasing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time Goals record, “…He’s not like that.” Laviolette goes on to talk about Ovi and says: “This was my first time getting a chance to know Ovi, I knew him before, but I think when you work with somebody you really get to know them. I have so much respect for him as a person, as a player, for the way he plays the game.”“If you think about what he’s going to do in his career; there’s a chance he’s going to be number one in goals. And I don’t know how far he’ll push up this list, but he’s probably going to be Top 3 in hits; and when he hits I mean he hits. He is a physical, physical presence on the ice.”“To be able to do that over the longevity of his career, he’s a good person, I loved working with him. I had lots of great times with him, I was able to coach him. He’s just a really good person”, Laviolette continued.“I enjoyed every single minute. I’ll look back at my career, and there’ll be things I’m going to say ‘I was happy to do this, I was really happy I was able to do that’, I was really happy to be able to work with him for three years, and that’s the truth.”.

Later Dan talks about teams that potentially might be intersted in Anthony Mantha and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Per The Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, Mantha's name is starting to come up in trade talks.

Then in the final segment it's a Capitals fan day Friday and Dan talks to Gil from the Powerplay Point Podcast

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the trade chatter surrounding Tom Wilson. It's Dan's belief that Tom is the next Captain of the Caps and they would be best served to sign him to a new deal sooner than later. Wilson is a leader on and off the ice. Often tagged as a goon, Tom defies that by scoring 20+ goals a season. "RMNB wonders if a Willy for Willy trade could be possible after comparing Nylander’s deal with Wilson. The only issue is Wilson’s status as he only played 33 games this season. But his physical defensive abilities would definitely be welcome in Toronto." Most teams could benefit from having Tom. The Caps should do everything thing they can to lock him up lock him up long term. Mac has said: ""I'd like for Tom to finish up in Washington. He's been a big part of our culture, our group," MacLellan said of the King Clancy nominee. "He's consistency gotten better throughout the years. We're going to do everything we can to sign him."

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the future of TJ Oshie in DC. He's under contract through the 2024/2025 season. He's still a pretty solid player but is showing dips in production. According to Washington Hockey Now: "The 36-year-old’s plus/minus has plummeted over the last three seasons, with Oshie registering -18 in 2022-23. His 2021-22 season — in which he played 44 games — saw a handful of career lows including the lowest points per game rate of his 15-year career. Dan talks about Oshie's comments about training and getting back to where he needs to be. "“My training regimen is going to be a lot different this year, a lot more focused on core strength and conditioning for next season,” he continued. “Typically my training can’t really begin until August and by then I’m just playing catch up. So it’s a big opportunity for me to come back and look a little bit more than I did four-five years ago and to have a full season without my back setting me back.”

Oshie is a guy that everyone loves in the locker room but it's Dans belief they should try and trade while he still has eome value in the NHL

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan is joined by Dan and Brandon of the (What the Puck) podcast and they talk about this past season and if there was something that GM Brian Maclellan could've done to help salvage the season? Mac knew this team was hit with a myriad of injuries. Could he have made a big trade to try and get the Caps to make a push for the playoffs. It would have been tough, but I think if he made some timely trades it could've helped. Later they talk about this aging roster and if they can compete in an increasingly young and fast NHL. Later they talk about Peter Laviolette and how much of the blame was on him for the Capitals poor performance. Then they talk about if the Caps tried to Hang on to this roster too long. If they made changes sooner, could this team still be young and viable. They then talk about the importance of Tom Wilson and how he could be the future captain of the Capitals.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dand talks about the free agents on the team and what their futures might be. Conor Sheary, Craig Smith, Connor Brown and Carl Hagelin as well as defenseman Matt Irwin may have very well played their last season in DC. The free agent market is weak, so the Capitals might have to pursue some big trades in order to make this team competitive next season. What is the future of some of the biggest name Capitals. It's Dan's belief that the Capitals should explore trade options for TJ Oshie, Nick Backstrom and potentially Charlie Lindgren if they can get the right return. Dan talks about a Capitals team that could be very good if they could add a player like: William Nylander, Mark Scheifle or Alex DeBrincat. Are those players in reach and do the Capitals have the assets to make a deal like those happen?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the upcoming draft and one potential draft option in Matvei Michkov. One of the draw backs is that Michkov is signed to a KHL deal through 2025-26, creating an uncertian timeline for when he might be able to actually play for the team that drafts him. According to The Athletic: "On pure talent, he’s arguably the highest-ceiling player in this draft class besides Connor Bedard. The hype around him has been tempered, however, because of some serious question marks. Michkov is signed in the KHL for the next three years, through the 2025-26 season. Scott Wheeler has described Michkov as “without question or hesitation, the best prospect I’ve ever ranked at No. 3 in advance of any draft and the best Russian prospect since Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin back in 2004.”

He is also historically a great hockey player According to The Hockey News: "During his age-16 season at the U-20 level, Michkov exceeded any and all expectations. He set the record for both goals and points for 16-year-olds scoring at the MHL level, with 38 goals and 56 points. His totals topped Nikita Kucherov’s numbers from the 2009-10 season, where he became the first player to score more than 20 goals and record more than 50 points. The Capitals will be lucky to draft him if he's available.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks baout the reports the Caps have reached out to the Maple Leafs to get permission to interview Spencer Carbery. “Now that the Maple Leafs are out of the playoffs, there’s no question that teams will be reaching out about Toronto assistant coach Spencer Carbery, and I believe the Capitals, his old organization, have already sought permission to interview him for their vacant head coach position, although neither organization would confirm that Tuesday,” LeBrun writes. The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun is reporting that he believes the Capitals have asked permission to interview Spencer Carbery for their open head coaching job. Would he be a good fit behind the bench in Washington? Later Dan talks about The Atheletic pole where Tarik El-Bashir asked Caps fans about the confidence in the team and leadership. Dan gives his thoughts about the pole results and the direction the team is going in.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the idea of having Hunter Shepard as a backup goalie for the Capitals and leaving the option open to trade Charlie Lindgren. I believe that Hunter would be an upgrade for one and I also thing viewing Lindgren as a "trade chip" a good idea. Shepard was ranked the #2 goalie in all of the AHL last season during the regular season boasting a 0.916 save percentage, 2.18 goals against average and a 20-8 record. NBC Sports Wasington said "Shepard went 3-1-0-0 with just seven goals allowed and 85 saves in the Bears’ second-round series win over the Charlotte Checkers. After competing with Fucale for playing time for most of the season, Shepard earned the confidence of the coaching staff to lead the Bears on a deep playoff run." Charlie is a good goalie but I do believe Shepard is an upgrade. According to the Hockey News"Lindgren started 26 games and played in 31 for Washington this past season and also made a statement as a star of the month back in December when he led his team through a surge with Darcy Kuemper concussed. Through 11 games that month, he boasted a league-high nine wins with a .929 save percentage and 2.02 GAA. There were some struggles later in the year that led to a final .899 save percentage to close out the year. And while he wanted some of those goals back, he remained confident in his ability and said that he did what he wanted to do: improve and play a key role, whether he was starting or backing up."

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the candidates to be the next head coach of the Capitals. Per The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, "the Capitals have requested to interview current Toronto Maple Leafs assistant Spencer Carbery for the head coaching vacancy now that the Leafs' season is over following their second-round exit at the hands of the Florida Panthers. There is still interest in DMV native, alum and current Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jeff Halpern, who's also getting an interview." Othe canidates are Jeff Halpern and Gerard Gallant plus many more that we don't know about.
