Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan is joined by Mike Vogel of Washingtoncaps.com. IN the first segment Dan talks about the great season that Vincent Iorio is having in Hershey. “It’s been good,” Iorio said after an early May practice of his first season. “Rookie years always have ups and downs and I think I’ve had plenty of ups and downs but having the veteran leadership and the veteran group that we have here, they’ve really helped weather that. Just for all the young guys, they’ve taken us in and they’ve treated us so well. They’ve really helped us learn the ropes.”

Later Dan talks to Mike about the future of Evgeny Kuznetsov on the Capitals and if a new coach could get more out of him. Then they talk about the qualities of the next head coach and how they will need to work with the younger and newer players. We then talk's about next season and I get Mike's thoughts on next season.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan is joined by Jared Serre of Washington Hockey Now as they talk about the options available for the next head coach of the Capitals. Pierre LeBrun wrote on Twitter about Laviolette, “This is as much about the veteran coach wanting to hit the free-agent market and bet on himself as it is the team also wanting a new voice behind the bench.” GM Brian Maclellan has said he wants a coach that can work with the young players and the veterans. “We’ll see how it shakes out here,” MacLellan said last month. “We’ll start looking at names and, with our group, talk about different coaches that people know and traits they have. Maybe we have to wait to talk to some assistant coaches that we think are candidates. We’ll see how it goes.”

Later they talk about the latest with Evgeny Kuznetsov and how he appears to be not happy playing hockey in Washington anymore. “We’ll see how it shakes out here,” MacLellan said last month. “We’ll start looking at names and, with our group, talk about different coaches that people know and traits they have. Maybe we have to wait to talk to some assistant coaches that we think are candidates. We’ll see how it goes.”

Later they talk about the draft and what playero r position they should target. Then they talk about how what changes need to be mad before the start of next season for the Capitals to be competitive again

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the future of Nick Backstrom on the Capitals. Nick had a hip resurfacing procedure done last season and has seen a bit of a dip in production. Backstrom, 35, had hip-resurfacing surgery last summer, which kept him out of action until January. Since then, Backstrom has not played well, particularly on offense. The Capitals attempt 51.8 shots per hour when he’s on the ice, lowest among Caps forwards and a rate that would place the team around the league’s bottom five. Backstrom on his future: "Nick said he is hopeful that a full summer of training will help him regain the step he lost after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery last summer.“I’m optimistic that I’ll get some more strength back in the leg,” he said. GM Brian Maclellan wasn't so sure. "“Marginally, yes,” he said, asked if he thought Backstrom showed signs of improvement in the final weeks of the season. “It’s a tough thing to get through. We don’t have experience observing players that have done that. I don’t know what can happen in the offseason to make it significantly better.” MacLellan said at some point in the coming months, it’s possible Backstrom will “have to make a decision on his career.”

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about how Alex Ovechkin has the top-selling jersey two year in a row According to ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, "Wyshynski Ovechkin has now ranked first in jersey sales two years in a row. The Washington Capitals star was aided this season by not only the Caps releasing two new jersey styles, but also his own ascent up the all-time goal scoring list."

Later in the show Dan talks about Ethan Frank and how he might be ready to play in DC sooner than later. "We're talking, just watching [him] at the start of training camp and he was flying," head coach Todd Nelson recalled. "Somebody made a comment, 'This guy can probably score 30 goals in the American League.' We're just up there just like the old guys from The Muppets, right. Somebody else says, 'Well, it's a tough league."

Later Dan talks about the Caps re-signing of Michael Sgarbossa The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Michael Sgarbossa to a two-year, two-way contract ($775,000/$525,000), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced. According to Washingtoncaps.com: "Sgarbossa, 30, recorded 58 points (21g, 37a) in 60 regular-season games with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season. The 6'0", 187-pound forward led Hershey in assists, points and power-play assists (16). In addition, Sgarbossa ranked tied for first on the team in game-winning goals (5), second in power-play points (18), tied for second in plus/minus (+19) and third in goals. Sgarbossa's 58 points marked his highest single-season point total since 2018-19 (65p in 75 GP), his first season with the Bears, while his 37 assists marked a career high. In 218 games with Hershey, Sgarbossa has recorded 194 points (79g, 115a)."

In this edition of Lokced on CApitals Dan talks about what it's like to play with Connor Bedard. "You see how good he is every day. He does some crazy stuff there," Suzdalev told NBC Sports Washington. "If he keeps going, I'm sure he'll be a star player soon." According to NBC Sports Washington: "Suzdalev said he and Bedard are pretty close friends off the ice and speak regularly. In fact, the two players were roommates when Regina went on the road. Suzdalev said rooming with Bedard "was pretty fun" and emphasized that his linemate was one of the biggest jokesters on the team, so he often enjoyed hanging around him. "

Later Dan talks about GM Mac's thoughts about the draft. We're happy with where we're at and I'm confident we will choose the right player.

Then Dan talks about Tom Wilson Named Capitals Nominee for NHL's King Clancy Memorial Trophy

Trophy is awarded annually "to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community."

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals at the draft lottery. The Chicago Blackhawks will get to pick the first overall which mean Bedard is headed to the windy city. The Capitals stay put at number 8. WashingtonCaps.com:"The Capitals, who entered the Draft Lottery with the eighth-highest odds to win the first overall pick at 6.0 percent, will select eighth overall for the first time in franchise history. Washington owns a pick in the top 10 for the first time since 2007, when they selected defenseman Karl Alzner fifth overall. Prior to 2007, the last two times the Capitals picked in the top 10 they selected Nicklas Backstrom (fourth overall in 2006) and Alex Ovechkin (first overall in 2004). The Capitals own five total picks in the 2023 NHL Draft. In addition to the eighth overall pick, Washington owns their second, fourth, fifth and seventh-round picks. The order for the remaining picks outside of the top 16 will be determined by the results of the Stanley Cup Playoffs." Later Dan talks about the potential players that will be available to the Capitals. Most notably Dalibor Dvorsky according to the daily faceoff:"Dvorsky made a name for himself after tearing apart the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup when he led Slovakia to silver with eight goals and 12 points in five games. He had a pair of quiet World Junior Championship appearances and has had a so-so run with AIK over the past two years. Still, the raw talent is there. Dvorsky has one of the quickest releases and, when fully engaged, he’s smart enough to get creative without turning over the puck. There’s just too often where it feels like he’s floating around and logging ice time instead of being fully engaged, which is why he went from an early projected top-five pick to further down. But in terms of pure skill, I think he’ll be fine."

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the outstanding performance of Connor McMichael and Aliaksei Protas helped the Bears move on to the next round of the playoffs. Connor McMichael scored in each of their first two games and Aliaksei Protas found the scored twice in a decisive Game 4 victory over the Checkers. “We always talked about depth throughout the year,” head coach Todd Nelson said at practice Tuesday ahead of Game 3. “This is the first time all year where we’ve had everybody that’s capable of playing on our roster healthy and I don’t think there was a stretch all season long where we were like this.” Later Dan talks about Hendrix Lapierre and how he is having a good season, but has had a more bumpy road this season. “I feel like I’ve taken a big step,” Lapierre said in a press conference following the Bears’ practice Tuesday. “I was scratched during the season. I think it was in [February], in Charlotte. That was kind of a wake-up call for me because obviously you never want to be in the stands and, for that weekend, I really focused on those two games. I was looking at what the players do, what it takes and I’ve been doing a lot of video with the coaches.” Later Dan talks about the potentail moves of GM Brian Maclellan this summer "We want to finish out a couple of careers of important players in our organization and we want to stay competitive, but we also want to get younger," MacLellan said. "So it’s a challenge to be in position to have all three of those things, but we’re going to try.” Don't expect big mover but most likely moves similar to the Rasmus Sandin, Dylan Strome and Sonny Milano deals

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks abous the reports that Dimitry Orlov would be open to coming back to the Caps. We know that Orlov and Hathaway got traded to the Bruins when the Caps were sellers at the deadline. The unexpected happened and the Bruins were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Orlov sounded like he would entertain the ideaof coming back "It's tough -- probably yeah," Orlov said of seeking a potential return to the Capitals. "Gonna talk to my agent. How I see, if they trade me, I don't think it's gonna work out, but we'll see."

Later Dan talks about the next head coach search. Laviolette nd the Caps parted ways shortly after the conclusion of the season. Now the big push to hire the right next head coach. Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic reports the Capitals plan to interview former player and current Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach Jeff Halpern as part of their search process for Laviolette’s replacement.

Later Dan talks about Connor McMichael and how he's showing maturity beyond his years in Hershey. “I think it’s just been maturity and he’s invested into our hockey club right now,” Nelson said. “He’s really matured into somewhat of a leader on our hockey team. He says all the right things on the bench. When they scored to make it 2-1 [in Game 2], he was even-keel on the bench, helping the guys out. Then he goes out and performs and that’s a sign of him just growing as a player and he’s getting better and better every day.”

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the future of Peter Laviolette as a head coach in the NHL. Lavy didn't get the results that he was looking for. How much of that was covid and how much of that had to do with injury I guess will never really know. Lavy is ranked #1 in wins as far as wins as a US born coach and 8th overall. Later Dan talks about what does it mean to the Caps players when they here that they aren't young and fast enough. Then Dan talks about the changes that Brian Maclellan will need to make this off-season.
