In this edition of Locked on Capitals Hockey Troll of the Caps Chirp podcast joins the show as we talk about how the Capitals have been officially eliminated. We then talk about the injuries and how they impacted the season. Later they talk about the "untouchables" on the team and that all the players that aren't the untouchables should be open to consideration for trades to help improve this team. This year will mark the first time since 2014 that the Capitals have missed the playoffs. How will this team be better next season or are we just looking at defeat again next season. Many fans don't want to part with some of their favorite players, but that's what might be needed to make this team competitive again. In the last segment they talk about Peter Laviolette and what his future is with the Caps. The last time they missed the playoffs they fired their coach Adam Oates. Will Peter suffer the same fate?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the goalie situation. Zach Fucale and Hunter Shepard are UFA's at the end of the season. The question of if the Bears should bring them both back is complicated. The Bears recently signed Mitchell Gibson. From Nova Caps: "The Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli is reporting that the Washington Capitals have signed goaltender prospect Mitchell Gibson to a one-year deal. Gibson is also expected to sign an amateur tryout agreement (ATO) with the Hershey Bears, which will allow him to join the team this season." Seems like a solid option for years to come. Later Dan talks about James van Riemsdyk. In a piece in the Hockey Writer's they talk about him being a viable option. Dan weighs the pros and cons and how he doesn't really fit the narrative of the team getting younger. In the final segment Dan talks about Caps prospect Henrik Rybinski and where he fits in with the Capitals long term plans. According to The Hockey Writer's "The Capitals signed Rybinski to a three-year entry-level contract in March 2022, and he has been playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Hershey Bears since the start of the 2022-23 season. He has transitioned well to the professional level, with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points through 44 games, as well as a plus-5 rating and 18 penalty minutes. He seems like a good option not this season, but maybe a season or two from now.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Bob Matthews of the Bob Matthews joins the show as we talk about the state of the Capitals and how do Caps turn this team around and be competitive? It's a tough question. The Caps blue line was a big question mark before the trade deadline. The Caps added Rasmus Sandin and gave new contracts to Nick Jensen and TVR. The Caps defense has struggled and seems as though they are poised to struggle next year unless they sign a big name veteran that can compliment John Carlson. Later they talk about the Drama surrounding Evgeny Kuznetsov. He told a Russian media outlet that he wants out of DC, but when questioned about it he denies it. Then later in the show they talk about Peter Laviolette and his future in DC. The Caps are headed towards missing the playoffs for the first time in a long time. Is not extending Lavy the right idea. To close out the show they talk about the mess with Mantha and what is the long term plan for Rasmus Sandin?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about how Evgeny Kuznetsov is denying reports that he wants to leave the Capitals. In a tweet by Tarik El-Bashir Kuznetsov said: "Kuznetsov on his reported trade request: “You know how it is: It’s just people trying to…get the likes on Instagram or Twitter or whatever. I spoke to those people, and was like, ‘Where did this come from?’ …At this point, there is nothing to even talk about.” Later Dan talks about potential coaches for the Caps if Peter Laviolette doesn't get a new contract. Then Dan talks about the future of Anthony Mantha and Rasmus Sandin on this team. The Athletic said: "I also mentioned I don’t think we’ve reached buyout territory with Mantha, who carries a cap hit of $5.7 million next season, the final year of a four-year $22.8 million contract he signed with Detroit in 2020. The Caps historically do their best to avoid dead money situations. But if they did go in that direction, Mantha’s dead money cap hit would be $1.367 million next season and $2.167 million the following season, per Puckpedia’s buyout calculator."

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the rumors that Evgeny Kuznetsov wants out of DC. The Capitals are not happy with his play and Evgeny is not happy with where he's at in the Capitals lineup. Kuzy has always been a very hot and cold ever since he came to the Caps. The Athletic: "The Caps’ decision-makers are disappointed in Kuznetsov’s season. They desperately needed him to step forward and he did not. He turns 31 in May, counts $7.8 million against the salary cap for two seasons after this one, scored no goals in October and one in January, and struggled defensively all year… I don’t know where things go from here. But something’s got to give." It's Dan belief that if he isn't happy here and not performing well, maybe he would be best served to go somewhere else. Later Dan talks about the Hershey Bears the Capitals AHL affiliate. Our Sports Central:"The Hershey Bears (38-16-5-3) clinched their 70th playoff berth in franchise history with a 4-1 victory over the Syracuse Crunch (30-24-5-3) on Saturday night at Upstate Medical University Arena." So despite the rough season the Caps are having this is a bright spot. Then Dan talks about the Capitals loss to the Penguins. The Caps were down by 3 to start the third and rallied to tie the game. Anthony Mantha then choked up the puck and the Pens won the game.
