In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Alex Ovechkin as he passed Gordie Howe Friday night scoring goals 801 and 802 making him 2nd all time in goals scored. Ovechkin's pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's record 894 goals really shouldn't be happening. Gretzky played in the high octane 80s; second-place Gordie Howe played 26 seasons across multiple eras of the league. This is a long time coming for Ovechkin Ovi started playing for Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Superleague when he was just 16 years old. On Oveckin's 802 goal. It's the kind of situation where, if you have a chance to take it, you take it," Ovechkin said. "I give it to Kuzy and he's like, 'I don't want to take it.' But after that, it's special."

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night. It was a game that saw Capitals blueliner Erik Gustafsson score a hat trick. Erik has only scored 3 goals all season and he scored all 3 Saturday night against the Leafs. In some bad news from the game TJ Oshe left the game early in what can only be called an "upper-body" injury. Oshie has already missed a lot of time this year, so it's not ideal. The Capitals got the win by beating their former goalie Ilya Samsonov

In the next segment Dan talks about the great play by Connor McMichael in Hershey. Connor wasn't able to find a permanent spot on the Capitals roster, but is getting plenty of time playing for the Hershey Bears. Through 14 games so far in the AHL, McMichael has 5 goals and 3 assists for eight points, and he is averaging .57 points per game, which puts him on pace for 41 points with the Bears this year.

In the last segment Dan talks about Alex Ovechkin's goal chase of Gordie Howe and eventually Wayne Gretzky. Ovi currently has 800 goals and only needs one more to tie Howe. Ovi and company play Howe's former team The Red Wings Monday night

"That's probably the record that will never be broken, to have that many goals just with one team."

Later in the show Dan talks about the long-term plans for Dylan Strome. Signed in the off season to a one-year deal as a stopgap in the absence of Nick Backstrom. The question is where does Strome fit in when Backstrom returns and will Strome be a Capital next year.

In the final segment Dan talks about Charlie Lindgren. He was named the NHL's first star. The "back up" netminder for the Capitals is playing more like a number one and a pleasant surprise in Kuemper's absence.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the historic night for Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals as he scores 798, 799 and 800 against the Chicago Blackhawks Tuesday night against the Chicago BlackHawks. On the evening Alex said:

“As soon as it happen(ed), kind of relief,” Ovechkin said of his hat trick tally. “Kind of happiness and enjoying it.”

“It’s a big number. It’s the best company anyone can imagine since you start playing hockey to be that category — 800. I’m the third person who ever scored that many goals. Without my teammates, without organization, fans, my family, I would never get that number.”

His teammates said:

"Holy bleep the great 800!!!!!!!! Legend," Strome wrote with a goat emoji (representative of the Greatest Of All Time) in his Instagram story.

Goal 800 was orchestrated by Anthony Mantha. He said:

"I could have shot it, but then I saw someone coming backdoor with a right-handed stick. You don't assume it's Ovi just because we're not playing together," Mantha explained. "But it was after the change. And he ended up putting it in the back of the net."

Many of Alex's goals were assisted by Nick Backstrom. Backstrom wasn't on the ice, but was in the locker room and said:

"Big congrats to Ovi for reaching 800 goals. What a milestone!" he wrote. "So proud of you friend. #GR800."
