Locked On Falcons - Daily Podcast On The Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are in the market for a new quarterback and Washington's Michael Penix, Jr. was the standout on the first day of practice at the 2024 Senior Bowl. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down what made Penix look so good and compares him with the other six throwers on the first day.

He also breaks down why Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey consistently caught his eye among the wide receivers catching passes from Penix and the other quarterbacks. He breaks whether or not the Falcons will find the speed their offense needs down in Mobile.

Later, he discusses some of the standouts in the trenches, including a sleeper at offensive tackle Christian Jones (Texas). He breaks down why size is on display in Mobile, and where that could fit in with the Falcons' plans for their run game under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson.

Finally, he shares his thoughts on Arthur Smith's hiring with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ben Johnson's choice to stick with the Detroit Lions, and Raheem Morris' 100 percent approval rating from his peers like New York Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.

The Atlanta Falcons have named a new defensive coordinator in former University of Washington coach Jimmy Lake under new head coach Raheem Morris. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why he thinks Lake can help elevate the Falcons' secondary without modifying their defensive scheme too much from what his predecessor Ryan Nielsen was able to do. He breaks down Lake's track record of producing NFL-caliber cornerbacks and safeties from his days at UW.

Later, he looks at the Falcons reportedly retaining three offensive assistants in T.J. Yates, Dwayne Ledford, and Michael Pitre. He discusses how the team holding onto Ledford (offensive line) and Pitre (running backs) shows that Morris and new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson believe the Falcons' run game will rebound after a down year. He discusses how Yates's move from wide receiver to quarterbacks coach should be a better use of his skill set.

Finally, he looks at some quarterback prospects at this week's Senior Bowl that might be on the Falcons' radar. He breaks down his thoughts on Michael Penix, Jr. (Washington), Bo Nix (Oregon), Spencer Rattler (South Carolina), Joe Milton (Tennessee), Sam Hartman (Notre Dame), Michael Pratt (Tulane), and Carter Bradley (South Alabama).

The Atlanta Falcons hired up-and-coming assistant coach Zac Robinson as their next offensive coordinator. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why he's excited about what Robinson will bring to the table in Atlanta, looking at his background as a player, coach, and analyst. Then, he looks back at the Falcons offensive line in 2023, discussing why Pro Football Focus grades tend to be higher on the team's run blocking than his own film study. He discusses each of the team's starters and what he liked or disliked about their play in 2023. Finally, he discusses the future of the team's offensive line and whether there will be a scheme shift under Morris and Robinson. He discusses how nearly all of the team's current starters can be moved on from in 2025 and 2026.

The Atlanta Falcons have found their man in former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, reuniting with the team's former interim head coach three years later. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why Morris is an ideal candidate given his knowledge of scheme and play-calling along with his ability to connect with players.

He breaks down why the Falcons circled back to Morris three years later, and why 2021 wasn't the right time for the Falcons to promote Morris given what their perceived issues were back then. He also addresses the cynicism that this hire was mostly about Rich McKay and Terry Fontenot keeping their jobs, and discusses why the Falcons decision-makers should want to preserve the status quo.

Finally, he looks ahead to unanswered questions about the future at quarterback and speculates on some assistant coaches that Morris could lure to Atlanta.

The Atlanta Falcons are moving ahead with a familiar face as their next head coach, with several outlets reporting Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris as their next head coach. Host Aaron Freeman and guests Jarvis Davis and Tenitra Bastite share their reactions to the news.

The Falcons and Morris reunited after the latter served as their interim head coach and defensive coordinator back in 2020 after the dismissal of former head coach Dan Quinn. What sort of leader and coach will not only the Falcons organization get, but their players? Does his background coaching on both sides of the ball give him a boost over other candidates? What does this mean to the city of Atlanta as Morris is the first full-time African-American head coach for the Falcons? What sort of vision does Morris have for the offense and the future of the quarterback position? They break it all down!

It may surprise some, but the Atlanta Falcons will not bring in Bill Belichick as their next head coach. Instead, they relied on the more sensible hire of former coaching staff member Raheem Morris. What will the Falcons do next at quarterback, if not settling with Desmond Ridder? Perhaps veterans like Justin Fields, Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins could be in play. But so too is the excellent crop of prospects at the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Atlanta Falcons may be on the verge of hiring their next coach after becoming compliant with the NFL's Rooney Rule. With in-person interviews of minority candidates like Raheem Morris and Ejiro Evero, the team is free to hire their next coach. Host Aaron Freeman speculates on when that might come and whether the team is days or weeks away from making their final decision.

He breaks down the team's interest in ex-Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and whether he's potentially in the mix for their next head coach versus being tapped to become the heir apparent should the team hire Bill Belichick. He also discusses if the Falcons were ever a serious contender for University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, now that he's in active talks with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Later, he looks back at the 2023 season to discuss the play of Kyle Pitts and the rest of the team's tight ends. He discusses the impact of Pitts' knee injury on his season and whether he'll bounce back in 2024. He also breaks down the looming decision in regards to Pitts' fifth-year option. He also discusses Jonnu Smith and Parker Hesse's value to the offense and whether a new coaching staff and play-caller will want to overhaul this position by trading away Pitts sooner versus later.

The Atlanta Falcons continue their search for their next head coach, but it may hit a snag due to internal division. Reports suggest that owner Arthur Blank wants former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, but is being blocked by team president Rich McKay. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why he's fully "Team McKay" and where this ultimatum could lead the team. He also discusses the potential timeline for when the Falcons might hire, with Blank zeroing in on Belichick sooner versus later, while McKay wants to extend the process.

Later, Aaron reviews the performances of the various Falcons wide receivers in the 2023 season. He breaks down Drake London's play and whether or not a different role could increase his production under a new coaching staff. He also looks at Van Jefferson, Scotty Miller, KhaDarel Hodge, and Mack Hollins' play and whether they'll be re-signed as free agents this offseason. He discusses whether the Falcons will be able to increase their explosiveness next year by adding more speed on the outside.

Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen is heading south to become Jacksonville Jaguars' new defensive play-caller. Host Aaron Freeman discusses how big a blow that will be to the Falcons' defense, discussing Nielsen's role in the team's significant improvement on that side of the ball. He breaks down the stats that show the true level and performance of the Falcons defense.

Later, he reviews the Falcons running back position and breaks down Bijan Robinson's debut year. Did the rookie phenom live up to the hype? He breaks down Robinson's usage and which areas could use improvement this year. He also discusses Tyler Allgeier's role and the causes for his decline in his sophomore season. Finally, he breaks down the potential offseason changes that loom with a change in the coaching staff that could lead to a shift in both their usages and fits within the blocking scheme.
