Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians episodes

March 18, 2022Guardians Non Roster Invites, Prospect Ranks, Draft Picks, and Who Can still Help
The Guardians sent out a press release with their newest additions. I am not sure if people were excited by the additions of Ian Gibaut and Jake Jewell but we talk about the pair of arms. Jewell is more famous, but I am more interested in Gibaut. I talk about the players who are off the market since we last talked and what players still make the most sense as potential trade targets.
I explain why Trevor Story, Nick Castellanos, and Michael Conforto would be long shots even if the Guardians had the money to spend. We then talk about the released information about the Guardians competitive balance pick which is slotted to be the 35th pick in the draft. We talk about how the draft is disappointing right now and bring up another pitcher in Carson Whisenhunt who is done for the year.
MLB.com released their top 100 prospects list. There are five Guardians listed: George Valera, Gabriel Arias, Bryan Rocchio, Tyler Freeman, and Daniel Espino. We also discuss Baseball America which released their Guardians list and is the only source that still has Tyler Freeman as their top prospect.

March 16, 2022CALM DOWN: It's Not a Sprint The Guardians WILL GET BETTER
Everyone is freaking out about a quiet start to the post-lockout. I know people wanted Jesse Winkler or Matt Olson. I explain why neither of them was ever a possibility for the Guardians and what their approach has always been. If one wants a team that dives into things and feels unstable the Browns are right there.
We talk about some of the other great players who are out there and why it is that the Guardians are more likely to make a trade than sign a player. The roster is so packed the Guardians did something they never do this week and I explain why that matters. In terms of names to watch there is still Ramon Laureano, Austin Meadows, Kyle Lewis, Matt Chapman, and Sean Murphy along with a dozen more.
We end with looking at some college power bats who just so happen to be facing each other this weekend. Luke Franzoni is an outfielder from Xavier who is third in the nation in home runs. He is also the youngest senior in the country younger than some sophomores out there. Matthew Ellis is a power-hitting catcher from Indiana who was also young for his draft class and has been highly productive now that he is getting a chance to play division one baseball.

March 14, 2022Twins are DEALING: Guardians are Adding Catchers
This might be Locked On Guardians, but we can’t ignore what the Twins are doing in the division. I talk about the three trades they have made since the lockout ended. One of these deals includes an old friend, and all of them made a lot of sense. The Twins are better now than they were and have a ton more flexibility.
We talk about the Guardians' issues with catcher development. They tend to draft a catcher or two a year and many were highly paid and have unfortunately very little to show for it. We dig into Luke Maile, the backup catcher and first addition that has been made to the major league roster this offseason. We talk about him, where he went to school, and the fact the Guardians drafted catchers have struggled to adjust to AA let alone the majors.
We end with a look at David Fry, the official addition the Guardians made over the weekend. Fry came over as the return for JC Mejia who was traded back in November. Fry might not be a big name, but he has performed well in the minors and has played every position out there. He is a solid return and instantly the number three catching prospect in the system.

March 11, 2022 Locked on the Locked Out Being Over: All You Need to Know About the CBA: It's not Great for the Guardians
1. Baseball is back; we dive into all the parts of the CBA and realize that the changes to the CBA are likely to hurt the Guardians long term. I get into how it will make rebuilds harder and how it will be even harder to sign great young players to contract extensions early.
2. We dig even deeper into the CBA talking about the one thing that will likely benefit the Guardians, the expanded playoffs along with the International Draft, and how draft pick compensation might be a surprise benefit for the Guardians in the long term.
3.We end with a quick preview of the AL Central in its current state and my attempt to predict the division based on where it is right now.

March 10, 2022Hot Takes on Manger Ranks: Also the Craziest Pitcher Box Score I Have Seen
Who are the top managers in the central? My view might go against the grain but I think there is a clear top two, a middle, and an even clearer bottom two. Find out where Terry Francano and the rest measure up by my view.
We talk about the college pitcher class and how there has been another hit to an already weak group with Landon Sims leaving his start due to injury. We talk about the current strikeout king Brycen Mautz, who also had the weirdest box score I have ever seen which came from Mautz. I also explain why it is that he could be a Guardians target come June.
Derek Orndorff is the current home run king of college baseball. The Pennsylvania product has had a long trip to get to Liberty but he is playing centerfield and crushing the baseball. The former cold weather performer is getting a chance to shine and should be a priority senior sign-on draft day.

March 07, 2022Best Defense in the American League Central? Last Draft during a Work Stoppage 1995 Review
We continue the Locked on previews by looking at the top defensive squads in the American League central. I begin by looking at the worst two years from a year ago, the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers.
Next up we talk about the Twins who are also in the running for the worst defense in the division. Before we dive into the top two teams in the division the Cleveland Guardians and the Kansas City Royals.
We finish by looking at the last draft that occurred after a work stoppage. The 1995 draft saw the Guardians take a pair of college first basemen. The first-rounder flopped and the second-rounder ended up an All-Star and one of the best selections of the 90s.

March 04, 2022Ranking the Lineups in the American League Central: Guardians Aren't Last
The American League Central preview continues. In segment one, we focus on the top two teams even if I reserve the right to change my mind later. We focus on the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins.
We come back and talk about the Detroit Tigers who are right there with the Twins and White Sox. Then we focus on the bottom two lineups: the Guardians and the Royals. It might surprise some but the Royals are rather clearly the weaker lineup.
We end with a focus on why it is that I think Mid-May is when baseball will begin. I get into the reasons, mostly economics, on why I think that Mid-May is the earliest anyone can hope to see the Guardians play baseball when it matters.

March 03, 2022AL Central Relief Corp Comparison: Wednesday College Roundup Patrick Messick, Hunter Barco, and More
We do a little talk on the Lock Out for Locked on. Locked On is doing a comparison in each division. We continue by looking at the reliever ranks in this division. Where do your Guardians rank? Is there any debate about who the top team should be?
Wednesday Wrap up for college baseball. We talk about Tommy White’s continued excellence and why Brad Malm who is second in the nation in home runs deserves some run. We look at why his home run might be more interesting than other big-name players like Kevin Parada. It might be early on but why small school stats carry more weight now than they ever will this season.
A pair of arms from the state of Florida are at the top of the strikeout charts. Patrick Messick and Hunter Barco are a pair of lefties that fit the Guardians draft approach to a T and should be a pair of arms that any Guardians draft fan should be charting this year.

February 28, 2022Who has the Best Rotation in the AL Central? Guardians Dominate ZIPS Prospect Ranks
Locked On is doing a comparison in each division. We start today, by looking at the rotations of the central. Where do the Guardians rank, better than you might expect? It seems like a rather straightforward contest, but as I learned a year ago I am sure the rest of the division won’t agree.
The ZIPS projection system for prospects was released on Friday. The Guardians have TEN players in the top 100. This system has been the best projector of future value and we dig into the top 100 talking about how the system varies hugely from other ranks.
We then dig into the positional top tens. Might the Guardians have their own internal options in the outfield after years of problems? The ZIPS system certainly thinks so, we dig into who could help sooner than later. While also discussing some other players that I mentioned in my underrated prospects piece in December.

February 25, 2022Fangraphs Top 100 List and Mailbag
Fangraphs top 100 prospects dropped, and to some, it was likely the most surprising list. I explain why it is that Tyler Freeman and George Valera are both outside of the top five for Fangraphs. I also explain why it is now in general across sites that Tyler Freeman seems to be slipping in prospect ranks. I talk about the changes in perspectives and where I was right and wrong about these players.
I dig into the top 100 prospects which feature five more Guardians. The fast-rising Steve Kwan, and the near-consensus top prospect Brayan Rocchio. We also talk about Daniel Espino, Nolan Jones, and Gabriel Arias.
Then we take some questions from the listeners as we empty out most of the February mailbag.
