Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox

Opening Day is in three weeks. How are you feeling about the Chicago White Sox since Spring Training began? This question was presented on social media and there were many, many responses. Most of the fan replies were of a positive nature. Lots of optimism now that Elvis Andrus is back and for the way Pedro Grifol has been running camp. Oscar Colas has also generated buzz amongst fans. There is still some negativity out there, which is understandable. At the end of the day, the same owner and front office is still in place. There were also some fans that are indifferent. Naturally, there's excitement for a new year but a 'wait and see' approach is sometimes best. All in all, fans seem to be feeling a whole lot better about the White Sox than they were before Spring Training started. Luis Robert, Jr. and Andrew Vaughn get some national attention for their potential to be breakout players in 2023. And, is Tony La Russa off the hook for what happened to the Sox last season?

Mailbag Wednesday: Pedro Grifol preaches fundamentals and the Chicago White Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers. As White Sox spring training continues to plug along, fans hear more and more about the initiatives of first time manager Pedro Grifol. He has emphasized culture and chemistry while also focusing on fundamentals. Could Grifol be the difference maker? Will he be the reason this team is successful in 2023? It's too early to tell but fans seems to like what they have seen and heard so far. The Sox have tough decisions to make when it comes to certain roster spots, specially with regards to the utility/bench roles. Romy Gonzalez, Leury Garcia, Hanser Alberto, Gavin Sheets, Billy Hamilton and Victor Reyes are all vying for essentially three spots. Who's in and who's out? Tim Anderson talks about Jose Abreu's recent comments regarding the 2022 team. Anderson agrees with Abreu that the Sox were not a family and Anderson believes that's why it's so very important for the Sox to come together sooner rather than later.

Hanser Alberto continues to make the most out of his opportunity with the Chicago White Sox in AZ. Since Elvis Andrus rejoined the Sox, there are not as many position battles as fans anticipated. One particular battle is for the utility role. The White Sox have options and are of course looking for versatility with not only the bat but also the glove. Infielder, Hanser Alberto, can play multiple positions and has impressed with his bat so far in Glendale. The Sox have won two of the last three games during Cactus League play. Giolito and Cease logged some innings recently, still shaking off the rust and getting accustomed to the pitch clock. Andrew Vaughn and Yasmani Grandal have been flexing the power and Oscar Colas continues to hit. Pedro Grifol opens up about his first spring training as a big league manager. It appears as if Grifol is operating a player director, manager facilitated Sox camp. Also, MLB concludes their investigation into Mike Clevinger. According to MLB, Clevinger will not be suspended.

Mailbag Wednesday: Checking in on some prospects and the Chicago White Sox made it two in a row. The White Sox beat the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday afternoon, by a score of 4-1. Oscar Colas continues to hit as he has played in every game so far. Luis Robert had his second double of the spring and Eloy Jimenez went 2-for-2. Unfortunately, the White Sox were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and Yoan Moncada is still looking for his first hit of the Cactus League. Sox fans hear a lot about Colas and Colson Montgomery but how about some of the lesser known prospects? Writer for White Sox Daily, Daniel Victor, provided some insight on Cristian Mena and Yoelqui Cespedes. Also, where is the best place for Andrew Vaughn in the batting order and how are the White Sox progressing with situational hitting? Elvis Andrus talks about changing position and playing second base for the first time in his now 15th MLB season.

The Chicago White Sox got their first win of the spring and Jake Burger hit another massive home run. Burger hit a 6th inning bomb to dead center. It was his second home run of the spring. His power has never been in question but his defensive inabilities have left him on the outside looking in. Burger has been playing first base this spring and his hoping to force his way on the roster. With the help of Burger's blast and 15 hits in total, the White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners on Monday by a score of 10-1. Yasmani Grandal had a pair of hits, as did Andrew Vaughn. Oscar Colas saw action as well. Colas has played in every game so far. Sox used seven pitchers and starter, Jesse Scholtens, was the only Sox arm to give up a run. White Sox cleaned things up defensively and also practiced some plate discipline. Sox only struck out five times on Monday while also drawing five walks. Next up for the White Sox: Arizona Diamondbacks.

Hope springs eternal as Chicago White Sox baseball is finally back. Yes, it's just spring training. Yes, the games don't count. Yes, it might matter very little. It's been a long offseason and baseball is being played, which is enough of a reason to celebrate. The White Sox had a forgettable weekend as they lost their first two games of the Spring. Sox fell to the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend. Lance Lynn got the start for the Sox in Game 1. He went his scheduled three innings and looked comfortable on the mound. Aside from home runs by Jake Burger and Gavin Sheets against the Padres, the White Sox could not get much going offensively in their first two games. Situational hitting was a problem last season but new hitting coach, Jose Castro, is well aware of the struggles and is making it a focus. Andrew Vaughn has some big shoes to fill as he steps out of Jose Abreu's shadow. Vaughn has the right mental approach as he looks to add his name to the long list of legendary White Sox first basemen.

Eloy Jiménez really, really wants to play right field for the Chicago White Sox. Jiménez dropped 25-30 pounds this past offseason and has been putting a lot of work in the outfield with hopes he can spend more of his time in right field than on the bench waiting for his opportunity to hit. Pedro Grifol appears to be encouraging Jiménez to keep up the impressive work and to not settle for simply the designated hitter distinction. Lance Lynn gets the nod for the first game of the spring. Lynn may see three innings or more depending on how he feels. Participants in the World Baseball Classic will probably see a lot of playing time in the first week or so. Tim Anderson is hoping for positive vibes this season and talked about his future plans. Anderson wants to stay in a White Sox uniform and hopes for clarity on his future sooner rather than later.

Will this be the year that Michael Kopech stays healthy and puts it all together for the Chicago White Sox? The short answer is: We don't know, but it has to be. Kopech is entering his seventh season with White Sox yet fans have still don't have an idea about his true capabilities. Last year was Kopech's first full season in the starting rotation. His year was limited by injuries but he's spent the off-season reimagining how he performs on the mound. Becoming a more complete pitcher instead of some young talent that can throw hard. The White Sox have had a revolving door in right field for many years. They did not address that position with a proven, veteran right fielder in the off-season so it's most likely a job for either Gavin Sheets or Oscar Colas. Although Sheets has some experience, Colas has been the guy that brings the most excitement. He's put in a lot of work to understand what pitchers are trying to do against him and has developed a relationship with Luis Robert. Could Colas be the sixth different right fielder in as many years come Opening Day?
