Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox

Mailbag Wednesday: If healthy, how far can the Chicago White Sox realistically go in 2023? Most baseball pundits and fans have to preface any predictions regarding the White Sox with: 'If they can actually stay healthy this season....' It's something we've gotten used to as White Sox fans and it's why this team so difficult to project. They were not healthy last year and we still don't know what the ceiling is for players like Eloy Jimenez or Luis Robert. If the Sox can actually stay on the field, then they can be a dangerous team in 2023. Was it a confidence issue for Yoan Moncada last season and can a successful World Baseball Classic turn into a monstrous year with the Sox? Yasmani Grandal's name does not come to mind when baseball experts think about the best catchers in the game. Why is he such a wild card on this team and is it more likely that his offense will bounce back or will it be his defense?

Position players reported to camp and Pedro Grifol wants the White Sox to be proactive not reactive. You practice like you play and play like you practice. Grifol has implemented a quicker pace and more intensity so far. With position players reporting, hopefully the team culture and chemistry continues to strengthen. Rick Hahn sheds some light on the Elvis Andrus signing and what it means for Romy Gonzalez. The infield depth will be a luxury but is there an odd man out? Could it be Leury Garcia? Yasmani Grandal has put in some serious work to improve himself physically as well as tweak his mannerisms behind the plate. With his legs feeling good and his overall health in a much better place than last year at this time, can we expect 2019 Yasmani Grandal? Tim Anderson and Lance Lynn provide some early quotes to set the tone moving forward. Projections and predictions to the wayside. This White Sox team has a ton of potential and should have an edge heading into the 2023 season.

Chicago White Sox bring back Elvis Andrus and Pedro Grifol works on developing team chemistry. The question of who will start second base for the White Sox might have turned into who will be the backup second baseman? Andrus returns to the Sox on a reported one year, $3 million dollar deal. This will be the first position change for Andrus in his career but the Sox are willing to take the risk. With the ban of the shift, second basemen will need more range and as a lifelong shortstop, Andrus can do that. Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert, Jr. are healthy and better prepared for the spring as they are also gearing up to represent Team Cuba in the World Baseball Classic. Lucas Giolito has made some huge changes this offseason to his body and his mechanics. He's slimmed down and turned to a more agile pitching motion. Lance Lynn talks about leadership and team chemistry while also preparing to get himself physically ready for a long season. Could Michael Kopech be the Opening Day starter? He has high expectations and feels like he will be all systems go by March 30th.

There has been some good, bad and very ugly from the Chicago White Sox camp so far. Let's start with the ugly. Mike Clevinger has been able to report to Spring Training and will participate in baseball activities while the MLB investigation of domestic violence and child abuse are ongoing. Rick Hahn, Mike Clevinger and Pedro Grifol all commented on the situation and it was a terrible way to start things off. Clevinger denied the allegations and said he did nothing wrong. Hahn said that bringing Clevinger to camp was the only option. Grifol said that the investigation will not be a distraction during camp. Wow. Thankfully, there has been some good during the first few days. Romy Gonzalez has received a lot of praise from both Hahn and Grifol. Yoan Moncada seems healthy and focused, ready to do whatever it takes this season.

Mailbag Wednesday: How will the Chicago White Sox utilize Jake Burger in 2023? Jake Burger seems like a man without a home. He will not overtake Yoan Moncada at third base and he most likely will not win a second base job. He doesn't play in the outfield and he doesn't have a lefty bat. Burger provided some exciting moments in 2022 and he is a player that you can easily root for but there's a strong chance that Jake Burger does not make the ballclub out of Spring Training. Can Yoan Moncada move back to second base? Is that position still Romy Gonzalez or Lenyn Sosa's to lose? Who do you most have confidence in this coming season and who has the most pressure on their shoulders? Also, is the White Sox starting staff really in the top ten in all of baseball? Comments, predictions, questions and more on this edition of Mailbag Wednesday.

Pedro Grifol is looking to create a Chicago White Sox culture that hinges on working and fighting together. Grifol will be conducting his first Spring Training as a big league manager. He has prioritized communication and the importance of getting on the same page from the get go. Creating culture takes everyone to buy in and Grifol hopes that steps taken in Arizona will lead to October baseball. Is Tim Anderson the clear leader now that Jose Abreu is gone? Does Anderson even want that type of assignment? It's an important year for so many Sox player but Anderson is at the top of the list. Luis Robert seems to have taken a leadership role with prospect Oscar Colas. Maybe Robert expands his role with more players? Hopefully there is no shortage of players that take Grifol's message to heart and share in the common goal.

Special Guest: Connor McKnight from ESPN 1000 joins to talk all things Chicago White Sox. Pitchers and catchers are set to report to Glendale, Arizona and Pedro Grifol prepares to run his first Spring Training as a big league manager. What are the storylines to follow as the White Sox ramp up to Opening Day? Are the Sox done making moves or could another arm be added to the roster? No wrong answers but one specific projection for the 2023 Chicago White Sox is unfortunate. The latest ZiPS projections through Fan Graphs has the White Sox finishing 3rd in the AL Central with a record of (74-88). All of the metrics, algorithms and player projections are explained on the Fan Graphs website but 74 wins? Really? This is the season of projections and there will continue to be an array of baseball prognosticators that offer their expert opinions while action in Arizona happens. The Sox have had a brutal off-season but are they really seven games worse than last year? The shift being banned should help Yoan Moncada, Gavin Sheets and Yasmani Grandal. The biggest off-season acquisition, Andrew Benintendi, could very well benefit the most from the new possibilities. Also, how close did Sox fans get from losing Jason Benetti? He went into detail regarding his recent contract negotiations with the White Sox.

Mailbag Wednesday: Chicago White Sox fans weigh in with apathy, some excitement and a mix of hope for 2023. Today's mailbag is really a follow up to the previous episode. The question: 'How are you feeling about the upcoming season?' triggers all kinds of emotions from Sox fans. Lots of indifference about the 2023 campaign and some fans simply not excited at all. This time of year is usually filled with hope no matter where the Sox are projected to be at the end of the season but some fans are unsure about how they feel and are trying to figure out how much time they want to invest in an organization that has been so mismanaged. Although most of the feedback skewed on the negative side, there was some optimism mixed in. It's a new manager, new coaching staff and a hope that this will be the year when Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert can stay healthy. Also, MLB goes into detail about the new rules coming to baseball this year. Bigger bases, a pitch clock and banning the shift.
