Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox

Finding consistent help from homegrown pitching has been a problem for the Chicago White Sox. The Sox have one of the worst farm systems in all of baseball. There are only two Sox prospects on the Top 100 MLB prospect list and neither of them are pitchers. For years, the Sox have used trades to bolster their starting pitching. Draft picks like Carlos Rodon and Chris Sale have been developed and have been sent on their way. Can the White Sox look to their dismal farm system and see a future front-line starter? Someone that can stick around and produce? There are some promising options like Norge Vera, Jared Kelley and Noah Schultz but the Sox fans might have to be patient. Long gone are the days when the White Sox had one of the best farm systems in all of baseball. If the Sox try to improve via the trade, will they cast away rising stars or pick from their 40 man roster?

Fan-centric questions regarding the current state of the Chicago White Sox and their past. Hey, it's Mailbag Wednesday on the Locked on White Sox podcast. Why did the Chicago White Sox pass on starting pitcher Johnny Cueto and sign Mike Clevinger? Should the Sox bring back Josh Harrison to be a veteran presence at second base or should they sign Tommy La Stella instead? Colorado Rockies great, Todd Helton, has been getting a lot of attention as the Hall of Fame voting continues. Why does Paul Konerko get passed over? Could Konerko ever find his way into the Hall of Fame? If broadcasters Steve Stone and Jason Benetti do not come back for the 2023 season, who could replace them in the TV booth? Also, the 17 year anniversary of the Sox signing free agent AJ Pierzynski and a look back at some ugly White Sox uniforms. Plus, Carlos Correa is back in the AL Central. What does this mean for the White Sox?

Could the Chicago White Sox improve via the trade by dealing lefty reliever Garrett Crochet? There have been some rumors lately focusing on White Sox reliever Garrett Crochet and infielder Gleyber Torres of the New York Yankees. Would the Sox seriously consider trading away one of their very few left handed pitchers? Crochet missed all of 2022 recovering from Tommy John surgery but was an exciting option out of the pen when he was fast tracked to the big leagues in the summer of 2020. The Sox need to solidify their second base situation and looking at Torres over even Eduardo Escobar from the New York Mets makes sense. We learn more about Lucas Giolito's efforts to return to accustomed levels this season as he focuses on 2023 and only 2023. Sox fans everywhere learned recently of the health status of Liam Hendriks. Hendriks has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and will begin treatment this week. Thoughts and prayers for Liam and his family as he begins his battle.

The Chicago White Sox made the Andrew Benintendi signing official as they now have a left fielder to play left field. It seems ridiculous to point out that the White Sox have signed a natural outfielder to play in left field but the Sox have made some odd decisions over the last several seasons. Benintendi automatically upgrades the defense and gives the Sox a much needed left-handed punch. Andrew Benintendi talked at the press conference about his excitement to join the already potent Sox lineup. He also said that the White Sox actively pursued him since the very beginning of the off-season. General manager Rick Hahn discussed why Benintendi is a perfect fit and why he has been after Benintendi's services for seven plus years. New Sox manager, Pedro Grifol, has prior experience with Benintendi from the Kansas City Royals days and believes Benintendi will be an excellent addition to the ballclub.

Opening up the mailbag and answering listener questions as well addressing all things Chicago White Sox. Some great fan-centric material was sent into the Locked on White Sox mailroom. What if the White Sox wore a different alternate uniform this year? Where to travel this season to see the White Sox and some optimism regarding Luis Robert. Also, if it's between Lucas Giolito and Liam Hendriks... which player should be traded? Speaking of trades, when will the Sox start operating via trade to improve this White Sox roster? Are the Toronto Blue Jays a viable trade partner and what would be the asking price? Also, new third base coach Eddie Rodriguez has a plan to help the Sox improve on their infield defense as he prioritizes communication and preparedness.

Andrew Vaughn will have his opportunity to shine in 2023 for the Chicago White Sox. Could this year be the year of Andrew Vaughn? He will be stepping out of the shadow of Jose Abreu and trying to carve his own path. The chance to play at his natural position is an exciting change of pace for Vaughn. Can his back hold up and can he perhaps find a mentor in someone like White Sox legend, Paul Konerko? Vaughn is one of the many players that gives reason for an optimistic approach to the upcoming season. The AL Central is a winnable division but the White Sox need to play with an edge from the beginning. Hopefully Pedro Grifol can guide his ballclub to play with urgency and some purpose. Oscar Colas will be an exciting player to watch in 2023 but who will be watching out for him? Jose Abreu was the mentor for so many Cuban players. What veteran will step up and help guide Colas through the grind of an MLB season?

Way too early predictions for the upcoming Chicago White Sox season as we turn the page on a bizarre 2022. The White Sox front office is pitching to fans that the hope for 2023 is improved health and players will return to accustomed levels. So, let's assume the White Sox stay relatively healthy. Let's assume most of the core players are able to stay in the lineup a majority of the season. How many home runs will Eloy Jimenez hit? Will Yoan Moncada return to his 2019 self? Could Yasmani Grandal put up similar numbers to his Milwaukee Brewers days? What about the starting rotation? How many innings could Michael Kopech throw? Is 15 wins possible for Dylan Cease? And, how about Lance Lynn? Lynn has been getting himself in shape and preparing for the long haul of the season. He seems to be on pace for a restriction-free Spring Training and a opportunity to pitch for team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Also, 2022 was a bizarre year in MLB and the Chicago White Sox did their part in making sure it was extra crazy.

It's time to have great expectations for the offensive production of the Chicago White Sox in 2023. With a brand new hitting coach in Jose Castro and a brand new assistant hitting coach in Chris Johnson, the White Sox will be heading in a new direction. The new hitting coaches are talking about the importance of putting in the work ahead of time and setting yourself up for success. Unlocking the potential through a new approach and a new vocabulary is a refreshing perspective as we close the books on one of the most disappointing years in White Sox history. Will the players buy into what Castro and Johnson are selling? After last season, they really have nothing to lose. There is so much potential between Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, Yoan Moncada, Andrew Vaughn and Andrew Benintendi. Hopefully there is improved health in 2023 and hopefully there is a massive increase in offensive production.

Saying goodbye to 2022 while looking ahead at a familiar problem for the Chicago White Sox in 2023. There were a lot of unfortunate moments for the White Sox during the 2022 season. Dallas Keuchel, Tony La Russa decisions, outfield featuring non-outfielders, baserunning and failing to have a player hit at least 20 home runs were just a few of the many failures. It's time to say goodbye to all the bad we experienced and start looking ahead to a brand new year filled with the same old question marks. The biggest mystery continues to be second base and it looks like a collection of internal options will fight for the starting role. The White Sox do not seem likely to throw money at that particular problem, even though it's been an issue for a long time. Could Romy Gonzalez be the man for the job in 2023?

Yasmani Grandal is on a mission to return to accustomed levels as the Chicago White Sox plan for 2023. Grandal had a disappointing 2022 season filled with injuries and his offensive production was below his standards. Grandal is in the last year of his contract and has stayed in Chicago this off season to get himself stronger, healthier and better prepared for the grind of 2023. What could go wrong for the White Sox this pat season definitely did. They found all sorts of interesting ways to lose games and struggled to find leadership once Tim Anderson was shelved with an injury in early August. Anderson clearly sets the tone for the White Sox. Would the organization try to give Anderson a contract extension to make him a member of the White Sox for rest of his career? Does Tim Anderson even want that or does he want to test free agency in a few years? The Sox would be wise to make a decision on Tim Anderson sooner rather than later.
