Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox

The process of cultivating a new culture for the Chicago White Sox might start with familiar faces. We know that new manager Pedro Grifol has already started surrounding himself new a coaching staff that features many familiar faces from his Kansas City days. Grifol has some familiarity with new left fielder, Andrew Benintendi, and the White Sox recently brought fan favorite Billy Hamilton back into the organization. Much like Benintendi, Hamilton spent some time in Kansas City. Speaking of Benintendi, he continues to work on improving his swing as he seems to focus on the process and let the results speak for themselves. A healthy 2023 will hopefully mean a spike in power numbers for Benintendi and all White Sox sluggers. If Pedro Grifol has a say in the matter, what area of need will the White Sox look to address next? More outfield depth or will the White Sox finally look to adding a veteran second baseman? Maybe free agent Jean Segura?

With the Andrew Benintendi signing, the Chicago White Sox finally have a left fielder to play left field. The White Sox were not supposed to be throwing money at their problems but that's exactly what they did when they signed Benintendi to a 5 yr./$75 million dollar deal recently. The Sox get a proven defender, a lefty bat and also gave Benintendi the richest contract in the franchise history. Benintendi will be reunited with coaches from his Kansas City Royals days such as Pedro Grifol, Mike Tosar and Eddie Rodriguez. The White Sox have coveted Benintendi since missing out on him in the 2015 MLB draft. Instead of operating via the trade market, Grifol and Hahn must have convinced owner Jerry Reinsdorf to live a little and spend on a free agent to address one of their glaring needs. Now what about second base?

Will Oscar Colas be the sixth different right fielder in as many years to start Opening Day for the White Sox? Right field has been a revolving door for the Chicago White Sox. AJ Pollock, Adam Eaton, Nicky Delmonico, Daniel Palka, and Avi Garcia have started in right field on Opening Day during the last five seasons. The White Sox have failed to acquire big name free agents and their short term moves have not produced results. Number two rated prospect, Oscar Colas, has been putting in the work this offseason and could make the leap to the big leagues come Opening Day. When, if ever, will Chicago baseball teams act like they are in a big market? If free agency has taught us anything so far... you adapt or you die. Also, seven years ago the White Sox traded for Todd Frazier.

Does new Chicago White Sox manager Pedro Grifol have a wish list this offseason? We have seen Grifol's fingerprints all over the new coaching staff but he could he also be wanting a few players to help mold his team his for 2023? Could free agent outfielder, Andrew Benintendi, be on Grifol's wish list? Benintendi checks all the boxes and has experience with Grifol from his Kansas City Royals days. He wouldn't cost very much but that fact that he would cost anything at all might be a deal breaker for the Sox. Lucas Giolito is working hard to return to accustomed levels. The news is encouraging in regards to his offseason development. Also, let's take a trip down memory lane when the White Sox spent a ton of money in free agency and made a very bold trade.

How are the Chicago White Sox a product of their AL Central environment? If the Cleveland Guardians or Minnesota Twins were spending big money would the White Sox follow suit and try to compete? If the AL Central behaved more like the NL East, would the Chicago White Sox will be more aggressive? Several free agents have been signed and we are now seeing trades happening throughout MLB. When will the dust settle in just the right way for the White Sox to make a move? Also, Guaranteed Rate Field might be getting a few new spots to drink your sorrows away. Would the White Sox ever seriously consider signing Nelson Cruz? It sure seems like he would sign himself, if he could.

Is Tim Anderson just as frustrated as the fans are with the Chicago White Sox organization? Some buzz was created last week when a Tweet about Anderson wearing something other than a White Sox jersey eventually received a 'like' by Tim Anderson, or someone controlling his account. It could be just pointless drama but maybe Anderson wants to chance a championship and does not see it happening on the South Side. Plus, with what shortstops are making in free agency, maybe the Sox simply can't afford the supposed face of the franchise. Also, what is the real motivation for Jerry Reinsdorf to spend like other owners throughout baseball and build a winning team? If the Sox are profitable right now... why do anything different? The White Sox added outfield depth in Victor Reyes and selected relief pitcher Nick Avila in last week's Rule 5 draft.

Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf made a joke but it was not very funny and general manger Rick Hahn delivers a message that is destined to fail. The Chicago White Sox won the 2022 Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence from MLB in recognition of the Amateur City Elite (ACE) program, which for 16 years has provided educational and baseball resources for underserved kids in Chicago. Sox owner, Jerry Reisndorf, was on hand for the ceremony and tried his hand at humor. Reinsdorf said, “It’s so much more important than winning a baseball game, which is good because we don’t win that many.” It was supposed to be a joke and probably was viewed that way during the ceremony but it was the wrong time and during the wrong week. The White Sox have failed to spend any money to seriously upgrade their roster and the owner decided to make a joke about winning games. Unfortunately, the joke has been on the fans for a long time. The only thing that Reinsdorf is serious about when it comes to success and the White Sox is that the team is profitable. What a joke.

It's the season of hope and the Chicago White Sox are asking fans to be patient as the dust settles. The White Sox have yet to be terribly active at all during this off-season and the MLB Winter Meetings did not produce the excitement Sox fans hoped for. The organization seems to be content on waiting until the perfect deal is laid before them. It sounds like the White Sox are still focused on operating via the trade to get better but there needs to be other things to happen throughout the rest of MLB before the Sox get what they need. Are the White Sox still in their competitive window? If they are, they sure do not act like it. Rick Hahn and the front office are hopeful players bounce back to accustomed levels and stay healthy. Does that strategy separate you from the other American League teams? Also, Pedro Grifol spoke to the media in San Diego and seems to be excited that White Sox players are participating in the World Baseball Classic.

At the Winter Meetings Chicago White Sox GM, Rick Hahn, said a lot of things without saying much at all. Are the White Sox looking to trade core players to get younger and set themselves up for success down the road? Maybe. Will the White Sox look to address needs via free agency? Perhaps. When will the White Sox orchestrate a trade to improve the roster? Wait and see. Rick Hahn was guarded in his comments but did seem to give off the impression that the White Sox will be waiting for other moves to occur throughout MLB before they act. What kind of market his Hahn waiting for? If they have a player they are targeting, why not just be proactive and address the need now instead of waiting for a market to hopefully emerge. Liam Hendriks is a player that other teams around baseball have been contacting the White Sox about with regards to a trade. Could Hendriks or even Tim Anderson be on the move this off-season?

Six years ago the Chicago White Sox traded away Chris Sale and chose a whole new direction. On December 6, 2016 the Chicago White Sox began the great rebuild that was rumored during the season. White Sox ace, Chris Sale, was shipped to the Boston Red Sox for essentially Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech. It was an exciting time for the White Sox fan base. The organization chose a direction and took a very bold step forward. Shortly after the trade, the Red Sox won the World Series while the White Sox are still waiting to win a playoff series. When, if ever, will White Sox fans see Kopech and Moncada reach their assumed potential? Also, the Mike Clevinger deal is official. Clevinger spoke to the media recently and seems to be very excited to be pitching on the South Side in 2023.
