Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox

Pitchers and catchers report to Arizona next week so how are you feeling about the Chicago White Sox? The White Sox front office have used a lot of management speak of these last several off-seasons. It happened again just a few months ago when Rick Hahn spoke about accountability, setting the bar high, being a destination for premium players but also being open-minded about what the realistic possibilities are for the White Sox to get better. Oh yeah, and Hahn talked about getting better via the trade market. The White Sox finally pulled off a trade and acquired a pitcher, Franklin German, from the Boston Red Sox. It's not a move that will entice fans to buy more tickets but it might prove valuable down the line. The White Sox have made a few of those moves lately with possible plans to create some competition during spring training.

The Chicago White Sox can be better than what's being predicted but what if they are not? Lots of way too early predictions are being made by baseball pundits everywhere. Some people have recognized that the White Sox were bitten by the injury bug in a major way and core players simply did not live up to their potential. Those particular people believe the White Sox can rebound in 2023 and possibly make the playoffs. Was the hiring of Pedro Grifol enough to out perform last year's team? Speaking of last year's team, where is Elvis Andrus and why is he not a member of the White Sox? There are all kinds of interesting lineups being projected with the assumption that things will get back to normal on the South Side. But what happens if the beginning of the season is a huge disappointment? What if everything does not go according to plan? What players do the Sox sell off at the deadline?

Mailbag Wednesday: How can the Chicago White Sox avoid another rebuild? After the disappointment of last season and the incomplete off-season, should White Sox fans brace for another teardown? The easy answer is that winning will hold off a rebuild but what happens if the beginning of the 2023 season is miserable? Should the Sox try to sell off what they can try to build things back up? Players like Lucas Giolito and Tim Anderson could very well be potential options. Are the off-season grades and win total projections fair? The White Sox have definitely failed once again to address all their needs and are dealing with Mike Clevinger's MLB investigation. It's been a very bad off-season. Also, How will the White Sox adjust to the new rules and can Oscar Colas make a run at the American League Rookie of the Year award?

What are the MLB prospect prognosticators saying about Chicago White Sox infielder Colson Montgomery? In Keith Law's latest Top 100 MLB prospect list, Montgomery comes in at #25. Last year, Montgomery was unranked. It's always exciting when a rising star gets national attention but predicting the future is no easy task. Could Montgomery be the next shortstop on the South Side or will the Sox decided to sell high and try to win now? Mike Clevinger is under MLB investigation for domestic violence and child abuse. According to a recent article in The Athletic, the White Sox most likely will have to wait out the process before making a decision on Clevinger's future with the ball club. The White Sox announced that the broadcast duo of Jason Benetti and Steve Stone will be back for the 2023 season. It will be Benetti's 8th year with the Sox and Stone's 16th.

Mike Clevinger is under investigation and where do the Chicago White Sox go from here? While the White Sox have said in a statement that they will not comment further while the investigation takes place, their silence speaks volumes. Should the Sox be proactive as well as decisive and cut Clevinger right now? The longer this investigation takes place, the bigger of a mess it may become. Clevinger was a gamble to begin with and with the latest allegations, he could be a question mark in 2023 for all new reasons. If the White Sox are without Clevinger this season, could Davis Martin step into the 5th spot in the rotation? Martin had his moments last season but ended the year on a miserable note. No matter if it's Martin or someone else, the Sox will most likely need to find a replacement. Recent rumors point to the Sox being interested in trading for Kansas City Royals infielder, Nicky Lopez. Do the Sox really want to weaken an already weak farm system on Nicky Lopez? Also, what can we expect from starting pitcher Michael Kopech? He might be someone the Sox need to lean on in 2023 but will he be healthy enough for the challenge?

Mailbag Wednesday: Will Eloy Jiménez be the Opening Day right fielder for the Chicago White Sox? Jiménez made himself available to the media recently and expressed his strong desire to play the outfield this season instead of being the designated hitter. He spoke about how hard he has been working but also recognized the importance of staying healthy. Did the White Sox create this murky situation by not acquiring a proven right fielder this off-season? Also, the Sox released a hype video as they advertised that single game tickets would be on sale in early February. Several players were featured in the video and the message of making up for a disappointing season seemed to be the main focus. Earning back the trust of the fans is important however the latest developments regarding allegations of domestic violence and child abuse by Mike Clevinger might be the last straw for a lot of fans. Many Sox fans are wondering if 2023 will just be another version of 2022.

Is it addition by subtraction for the Chicago White Sox as Luis Arráez is out of the AL Central? In an offseason that has featured very few moves by the White Sox, perhaps the biggest move for the Sox is the fact that the Minnesota Twins have traded away Arráez? It does not give the fanbase a sense of aggressively going about their business but the White Sox way tends to follow a passive approach. MLB Network analyst, Jon Morosi, is bullish on the White Sox as he recently picked the Sox to win the AL Central. Morosi stressed the importance of health and said players just need to have solid years, not necessarily career years. It's a big 'IF' but what if Sox sluggers Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert were healthy for a majority of the year and put up massive numbers? The Sox would be a very dangerous team. Right field will be a position that is scrutinized this Spring Training. New manager, Pedro Grifol, said that Oscar Colas will have every opportunity to prove himself but what are the backup plans?

Dylan Cease is preparing to follow up on a remarkable 2022 season with the Chicago White Sox. Cease recently made himself available to the Chicago media and talked about his off-season process and what he's focusing on as Spring Training gets closer. Dylan Cease came in 2nd place in the AL Cy Young voting in 2022 and has all the tools to be right back in the conversation with the best of the best this coming season. Cease has been working on a changeup and building up arm strength to get his body ready for the long haul. Cease decided to skip the World Baseball Classic and put all his focus on the 2023 campaign. Recent AL Cy Young award winners have found it difficult to repeat their award winning performance the following year. Can Cease, who was so close to capturing the prize in 2022, avoid a letdown and be one of the elite pitchers in the American League once again?

Mailbag Wednesday: Chicago White Sox questions focusing on Jake Marisnick, Mike Clevinger and Jerry Reinsdorf. Lots of great fan-centric questions to answer that pertain to an array of Sox topics. The White Sox recently acquired Jake Marisnick and he might very well be destined for AAA Charlotte however can he be the outfield depth that the Sox are looking for this season? Lucas Giolito is essentially pitching for a contract and the White Sox might not be the team that gives it to him but Mike Clevinger is trying to restart his career. Who has more to prove in 2023? Jerry Reinsdorf is well know for his loyalty and has kept Kenny Williams, along with Rick Hahn, on the payroll for far too long. Will Reinsdorf ever consider bringing in leadership from organizations that have demonstrated consistent success? And, with the White Sox still looking to make a trade this off-season, could Eloy Jimenez be someone that gets dealt?

The Chicago White Sox avoided arbitration with Lucas Giolito and four other pitchers. 2022 Cy Young runner up, Dylan Cease as well as Michael Kopech, Reynaldo Lopez and Jose Ruiz also avoided the arbitration process by coming to an agreement on contracts with the Sox. Last year at this time, the White Sox and Giolito could not initially come to terms. Giolito described the process last year as frustrating and disheartening. This is Giolito's walk year and the drama has been avoided for now. The international signing period began recently and the White Sox were active once again. Reports indicate that the Sox agreed to terms with pitcher Luis Reyes. He is ranked 41 on MLB list of Top 50 international prospects. The Sox also signed shortstop Juan Uribe, Jr. He is the son of 2005 White Sox legend, Juan Uribe. Also, the North Siders enjoyed their fan convention this past weekend... what happened to Sox Fest? White Sox fans were shut out for the third year in a row and the reasons are really no mystery.
