  • A Man's Path Through Fear - Ray Arata

Fear is one of the biggest things that stops men from having the success and intimacy they want. Becoming fearless is a far fetched goal, so it's important to figure out how to move through fear when it shows up. This conversation with Ray Arata shows you how.

  • Can a Man Still Be a Hero in this Modern Age? – Jeff Brown

Historically, male heroes have been the John Wayne type — stoic, dominant, emotionless…This type of hero doesn’t work  and often sacrificing their own well-being.

Men have come to me over the years with a desire to be a hero –– sometimes for a woman, a company or a movement…
It seems to be part of the male psyche that goes back to the beginning and is equated with being powerful.
Who or what have you wanted to a hero for?
Men have long been tasked with this path of saving, supporting, hunting, etc., and often feel good about that.
But when we look honestly, heroism also comes at the cost of others (domination, killing, etc.)  or self (setting aside one’s own needs to serve others).
The path of heroism has changed a lot for men.
While being the hero used to mean a John Wayne style — rugged, stoic, the emotionless rock– in recent days, more than ever, we need men’s strength to include their hearts.
This balance is important for the future of our planet, our people and each man involved.
In this Man Alive podcast episode I was joined by Jeff Brown, an incredible author and teacher of consciousness, who has his finger on the pulse on the evolution of men. We discussed:

    * How to shift from an outdated “John Wayne model” of heroism to a model that fits today’s world
    * The path of becoming a modern warrior
    * How to integrate a more heartfelt way into your capacity to be assertive and survive
    * What it takes for the malevolent masculine to become the benevolent masculine
    * How to stay resourced and balanced when on the front lines

Born in Toronto, Canada, Jeff Brown did all the things he was supposed to do to become successful in the eyes of the world. He was on the Dean’s Honor List as an undergraduate. He won the Law and Medicine prize in law school. He apprenticed with a top Canadian criminal lawyer, but on the verge of opening his own law practice, he heard a little voice inside telling him to stop, just stop. With great difficulty, he honored this voice and began a heartfelt quest for the truth that lived within him. Although he didn’t realize it at the time, Brown was actually questing for his innate image, the essential being that he came into this lifetime to embody. He was searching for his authentic face.
He has studied Bioenergetics, practiced as a body-centered psychotherapist, completed an MA in Psychology and co-founded the Open Heart Gang — a benevolent gang with a heartfelt intention. He became a successful entrepreneur. The most important thing Brown did, however, was the inner work. By going inside and connecting his spirituality with his emotional life, he learned essential lessons. By learning to surrender to the “School of Heart Knocks,” he found his authentic face and embraced the call to write Soulshaping in December, 2007.
He has written many books, a series of inspirations for ABC’S ‘Good Morning America’ in early, 2010, appeared on Fox News.com and dozens of radio shows and had a viral blog (‘Apologies to the Divine Feminine (from a warrior in transition). He has won awards for writing,

  • Buddhist Wisdom to Help a Relationship Last – Susan Piver

The 4 Noble Truths of Buddhist wisdom have not previously been applied to romantic relationships in such a clear and specific way. Susan Piver’s new book brings us incredible hope for decreasing suffering in long-term relationships!

If you’re not in a relationship you likely want to be in one, which can be painful.
But once we’re in a relationship, we find they’re not easy, simple, or the answer to many of our desires and fantasies.
In or out of relationship, people suffer a lot because of them.
I recently read a book about relationships that blew me away. It’s the manual I’ve been searching for — a simple, yet profound, book on how to navigate the struggles most couples face, in a more spacious and loving way.
Susan Piver, a Buddhist teacher and best selling author, who has been with her partner for 20 years, applied The 4 Noble Truths of Buddhist wisdom to romantic relationships and came up with The 4 Noble Truths of Love.
When there’s a conflict about money, time, affection, parenting, sex, etc., you can get caught in stories and theories or you can learn to engage with your partner with more mindfulness.
Relationships are unstable, Susan says. When we deny this (which I’ve seen many people, including myself, do) we experience more pain and struggle. Her wise-mind viewpoint offers a powerful framework for long-term relationships that, in my opinion, are more likely to last.
    In this conversation we covered…

    * How The 4 Noble Truths of Love (based on The 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism) can create more intimacy in your relationship
    * How to see through the stories you have about your partner that keep you unsatisfied
    * The difference between a love affair and a relationship — and what happens when we get the two confused
    * The idea that there’s no wrong relationship, but there is more pain and struggle when partners have different desires and expectations
    * Meditation and mindfulness as a path to decrease lashing out, blaming or isolating from your partner

To be honest, I sometimes confuse myself.
I wish I could be more straightforward and know exactly what I need and say so in a rational way.
I wish I wasn’t prone to burst into tears when I feel disappointed.
I wish the same kind of touch worked for me on Monday as on Thursday.

I am always working on how to be more vulnerable, honest and loving.

Have you felt strong emotions, such as anger or irritability, and not known what to do with them?
They may create distance in your relationships, or even scare your partner or girlfriend. They can create conflict or get you fired.
But at the same time they are valid human emotions, that show up for a reason.
Many men find anger and irritability increase as they get older, go through hormone changes, take on more responsibility and have less time for themselves. Whether you turn to exercise, diet, therapy, conversation, meditation or other possible solutions, it’s important to understand why the emotions are currently surfacing and what your unique recipe is for relief.
Jed Diamond is one of the world’s most trusted and knowledgeable therapists for men. He has been working with men, researching and writing books for more than 40 years!
In this Man Alive Podcast conversation we cover:

    * The 5 causes of Irritable Male Syndrome
    * What a Scottish ram can teach you about your testosterone levels + a simple tool to assess the testosterone levels you were born with
    * The first steps to take when you are frustrated or depressed (and perhaps blaming others for it)
    * One powerful solution to the increased responsibility and isolation men face
    * The invisible elephant in many couples’ relationships

This is an important topic for men’s health and well-being and it often gets overlooked or brushed aside. I highly recommend listening to this episode if any of this sounds familiar.

  • An Unexpected Path to Freedom and Love For White Men – Michael Welp

Freedom and love for white men…what? White men are often blamed for many things, including lack of diversity in the workplace. Michael Welp sees beyond stereotypes and blame. He supports white men to become full partners in diversity, while also liberating them from the limitations of “Male Culture” that cause suffering and isolation.

It makes me nervous to single out white men, but bear with me. I’m doing it supportively, not as an attack.
White men are often blamed for many things, including a lack of diversity in the workplace.
By now you likely know I don’t play the “All men are…” or “[Insert any group] men are…” game.
I see each man as an individual and believe you deserve to be known as the unique man you are.
But what do you do when you are viewed as a perpetrator or contributor to others’ struggles? And how can you use your power to create more good in the work place and in the world, without claiming that what’s happening is your fault?
Michael Welp has a powerful answer.
Michael is a dear friend and colleague who created a company called White Men As Full Diversity Partners. He has supported white men for decades to support diversity, while also liberating them from the limitations of white male culture that cause suffering and isolation.
It may not yet be obvious how these two topics intersect but Michael explains how white male cultural beliefs such as Rugged Individualism, Rationality over Emotion and Status & Rank over Connection, create pain and isolation for men too!
Michael has led his trainings at well-known companies around the world with incredible results. In this conversation we cover…

    * The high cost for men who unknowingly conform to White Male Culture
    * Eight Critical Leadership Skills and how to become a trusted leader, while becoming a better spouse and parent
    * The shift from defending yourself to taking responsibility — without needing to be at fault or take the blame
    * The benefit of diversity and inclusion for customer relationships and loyal followers
    * A surprising cause of men’s careers being derailed

After spending time in South Africa right after apartheid ended, Nelson Mandela became one of Michael’s inspirations. He wrote a letter saying he was astonished to see Mandela released from prison, after 27 years, embracing the white men who imprisoned him.
“You showed that love is the greatest force for change,” Michael wrote. “I want you to know it’s the same thread of love I carry that you passed on to the white men in South Africa.”
Michael has inspired me for years and I think this conversation will both inform and inspire you too.
