Host Dr. L says: There is a saying that God Gave Us Two Ears and One Mouth for a Reason. The notion: That we were born to listen more than we were to talk. In today’s society, the ever-present social media platform has given many a vehicle to use their voice, put out their message, and be heard. And, at the same time, as a society we are losing the art and skill of listening when our focus becomes ‘what can i say?’ instead of ‘how can I listen?’ In order to building back up the skill of listening, we must practice listening by being mindful about how we relate with others, and through truly dropping our own ego when we are in a position of listening. LESSONS: Building the skill of listening requires a mindful approach, one in which we are paying attention and working towards true engagement. Try being present with whom you are listening to by avoiding thinking about what you are going to say next or how you might sound and just practice hearing what they are saying. Engage in perspective shifting and cognitive flexibility by listening to podcasts or other audio sources that challenge your own position.
