  • 84: Cat Deeley on the Joy of Motherhood

If you're a fan of the hit show So You Think You Can Dance, you probably feel like I do, like you have a true friend in the show's host Cat Deeley. Cat has been in the entertainment industry for many years, first with MTV and now with SYTYCD but she also has another very important side of her private life, and that's her role as a mother. Cat recently wrote a beautiful children's book inspired by her two little boys called The Joy in You, and today I had the pleasure of sitting down with her to talk all about her inspiration behind the book and her ups and downs as a mother. We talk about her advice to new mothers, where she finds balance in motherhood and career, how she builds confidence in her children and what she's doing to keep herself and her children happy and feeling loved during all the chaos in the world.

  • 83: The Payoff and Promise of Hard Work

In a nod to Labor Day, Neil and I decided to focus today’s discussion on the value of hard work. We share stories about learning to work hard, and lots of favorite quotations on the principle of work and the payoff you reap from your effort with anything in life. I dive a little deeper into what life looked like as I tried to become a piano prodigy from the age of 10-18 and Neil shares some of his most impactful takeaways from the years he worked serving as a missionary for our church.

  • 82: Fatima Dedrickson on Friendship: The Power of Just One Friend

Have you ever felt like you’re the only one who struggles with finding good friends? That everyone else around you has built-in best friends and you’re the “odd man out?” Today in my interview with Fatima Dedrickson, also known by all her friends and family as “Fatty,” we talk about her experiences over the years with friendship and making the effort to be a good friend. Her stories start with being an international student at BYU who didn’t speak any English, having to take a dictionary to class and try to understand a brand new culture and language and having literally no family around and no built-in friends either. She shares her inspiring stories of bravery, putting herself out there for others to get to know and love, making the effort to be a friend, and the power ONE person can have to be someone’s ONE friend.

  • 79: Volunteering with Death: Firefighter Nurse Kris Jenkins' Story of Helping in NYC During the Height of the Pandemic

Kris Jenkins works for the Salt Lake Fire Department as a firefighter, paramedic and as a registered nurse for a Salt Lake hospital Emergency Room. Kris and I went to high school together and I found out on our 2003 facebook reunion page about his heroic effort to leave his family for a month and volunteer during the height of the pandemic in New York. Today Kris shares his inspiring story of why he felt compelled to go volunteer in New York as a nurse, what it was like to work every single day for a month straight with only ONE day off, how he was reassigned immediately upon arrival from the ER to the ICU where every single patient he cared for was fighting for their life with Covid-19. I came away from this interview with so much gratitude and a deeper appreciation for all the health heroes who have been on the front-lines of fighting coronavirus this year and I hope you will too.

  • 78: Cancel Culture, Second Chances, and Forgiveness

Do you know what “cancel culture” actually means? It’s okay if you didn’t, we didn’t either until recently. Today we discuss cancel culture, some recent examples in the media and talk through the dynamic social media plays in our world on whether people should have second chances. This leads us to talk about forgiveness and Neil opens up about his feelings toward the people who shot and killed his brother Dave 18 months ago, and what he’s doing to process and work through that situation. We conclude with some thoughts about how cancel culture can be a good thing when done in the right way, and how to move toward forgiveness if you’re struggling with that too.

  • 76: Schooling in a Pandemic: Homeschool, Online, and Distance Learning Options and Advice from a Utah State Board of Education Member Laura Belnap

Distance learning, homeschooling, online education oh my! All of the facebook mom groups I belong to are exploding right now with questions and discussion threads with hundreds of comments from other parents panicking about their options for this fall, what to do, what their options even are and how to decide what's best for their children and their schooling this fall. Today I'm interviewing a dear friend of mine, Laura Belnap, who is the MOST qualified person I know to speak on this subject who will be able to break all of this down for us parents.

Laura Collier Belnap has her bachelor's and master’s in education, is a pioneer in homeschooling and online education in the state of Utah, where she helped establish online education in 2002, working as the director of Utah Online Academies for three different school districts. She is currently the director of Utah Online Schools which serves over 10,000 students with 102 teachers and staff.

She has served on several different nonprofit boards and received the Soccer Mom of the Nation Award, the “Innovation in Education Award,” and most recently the Jon M. Hunstman award for Innovation.

She schooled her children at home for more than 14 years which changed her life and her relationship with her children.

Laura is active in legislative, community and religious causes. Laura is the proud mother of six children and 10 beautiful grandchildren and is married to her high school sweetheart Eric Belnap. On a personal note, she has been a lifelong mentor to me and each of my siblings and has had an enormous impact on each of our lives.

She was elected to the Utah state board of Education in 2014 where she serves as the finance chair.

  • 75: Civility in Unrest: Why We Desperately Need More Kindness and Awareness in Times of Trouble

Have you noticed that during the most crazy year that any of us have ever seen in our lifetime, we’re also seeing common courtesy and civility fade, especially in online interactions? Today Neil and I discuss why civility, kindness and respect are SO KEY to making progress and surviving all the challenges we face in this world. We talk about why it’s vital that we pay attention to what we’re saying in front of our kids, and the tone we’re using to express our opinions, putting ourselves in the shoes of others before criticizing, and just offering more grace and kindness to others as we navigate our families through uncharted waters.
